Hi all! I’m new to Starbucks and am having a really hard time. I know things take time, but I’m super overwhelmed all the time and haven’t had a shift yet where I haven’t completely broke down. When I was hired, I was told that baristas typically get like 20-25 hours a week, but I have been working 25-30 the past weeks. I have a chronic illness and am finding working this many hours really hard on my physical and mental health. What should I do? I don’t want to let anyone down, but I am absolutely miserable. Side note, my manager doesn’t know about my illness, which I know is on me, but I get really embarrassed and didn’t bring it up in the hiring process because I was told I would be working fewer hours. Also I’m sorry I’m just complaining, but I am really burnt out already and am just looking for guidance :(

Advice: tell your manager you need fewer hours. Give them a maximum. For every hour you don't want to work there are probably 3 other people who could use the pay.

Tell your shifts when you're burning out and ask to move to whatever position you need that day. "I'm about to have a meltdown; can I move to CS/front reg/cafe bar/whatever?" if your shifts are any good they'll help you out.

Stick up for yourself, hon.

Howdy! I’ve only been at starbucks for a couple of months, and I completely understand. I don’t experience it to the extent you do, but it is definitely overwhelming. For one, don’t be afraid to tell your SM that you need to change your availability to fewer hours a week. I’m sure there’s plenty of people who want the hours you’re giving up, so rather than thinking “I’m letting them down”, think of it as you trying to help out! Also, consider asking people to cover your shifts as an option. Try to find people who DO want more hours, and let them choose which shift they want to take from you. That’s what I do ;)

I’m sure you’re doing amazing. Don’t be afraid to do what’s best for you

I agree with the first two responses! I would like to add, review ALL of your benefits that are available to you! Update your availability online (ask your SM or SSVs how to do this) to the maximum hours that work for you! You don’t qualify for FMLA yet (you will after a certain amount of hours worked), but you DO qualify for accommodations (contact PCC, it’s basically HR) for additional information about that. So if you need time off due to your illness you can utilize accommodation without penalty.

Look out for yourself and your health FIRST!
