How long to hold borrowed partners’ tips?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by The_unsung_ninny
I’m the barista that distributes our stores tips. I was going through our trip folder and we have 7 borrowed partners who have not picked up their tips in about 3-5 months. Normally partners who want there tips will show up after 1 month at the latest. We try to make sure and keep track of everyone’s money, but these are partners we can’t even get a hold of and it’s a waste of our time trying to find them. I still want to be respectful of the fact that they earned those tips but I wanted others’ perspective on how long you hold tips/if you even do put them back into the stores tip jar.

I feel like I read that if they don’t pick them up they’re supposed to get mailed to the partners address that they have listed on my partner info but i could be wrong, but they do deserve the tips

Who does the mailing though? Not in my job description.

Idk i’ve never actually seen it done, pretty sure i just read it on another reddit thread but i assume the SM or someone, definitely not you

Lol I figured. Wouldn’t put it past corporate to expect us to assume “postal worker” as an additional task. Other than that, I’ll talk to my SM about it.

I would definitely hold them or try to see if you can get it to them.

When I first joined I didn’t know you were supposed to go in and pick up your tips and I especially felt awkward asking about tips at a store I didn’t belong to. Somebody else at my store went to work there a few weeks later and brought me my tips. I was really happy they kept them for me

I completely understand. And we’ve been holding them for a while but it’s been 5 months since these people have picked them up and the old tip person didn’t even leave a store # or nothing. So it’s hard to track them down.

We have a borrowed partner who comes every summer and we hold them forever. She always forgets.

I do the tips in my store and as far as I’m aware it’s 30 days. Usually within the first week or so of the tips not being picked up I’ll shoot the person(s) a message letting them know they have tips at my store. Once it hits the 30 day mark though they get added to the tip pool for that week

Pretty sure the policy is that they must be held. If you put the money in the tip pool on the 31st day you still owe that person tips. Unless you are an out of US partner. We do in fact need to mail it to them eventually, its just not clear when really and there is never time for that tbh. If you put 40 bucks of tips into the pool and the person comes for the 40 dollars and you dont have it, sounds like a cash management drama waiting to happen.

That’s true! I’ve had to ask my manager several times about this because we had a lot of borrowed partners during the initial covid outbreak last year. He’s told me 30 days, but that we have to contact said person first. I haven’t ever had anyone say anything about mailing them though 😳 whoopsie

Think you are responsible if any of them come for their tips now, but honestly I dont know the exact written policy. I would ask your manager to find the policy in writing so you know for sure. If it is 30 days then I guess its fine, but not sure.
