hi everyone, so this could be a dumb question. recently starbucks removed the chocolate almond milk foam and the cinnamon almond milk foam from our menu... but obviously customers continue to order it. we have all of the ingredients to continue to make it, so i was told to still make it for them, but to ring it as follows:
for the chocolate almond milk: cold brew add cold foam almond milk 2 mocha (in foam)
so by ringing this way, you are charging for both the foam and almond milk. yesterday i had a woman come through, and order a venti chocolate one.
The total ended up being in the $6 range. She was appalled by the price and kept asking me why it was so much, so i explained to her how it has been discontinued as a menu item so there’s no way to charge her for it other than this way. she was using stars for it anyway, and she was all like omg are my stars going to cover it???? why’s it so much???? that doesn’t make sense? so i asked if she wanted to speak to a shift, and she said no. she used her stars and left
I just have been thinking about this and wondering if I did what I should have? I’m not sure how much the drink cost before when it was still a menu item, so i’m not sure if i even charged her extra than it normally would have been. i feel like $6 for a starbucks venti cold brew bev is pretty typical.

i think we’ve been only charging for the cold foam and just typing “chocolate almond milk foam” as an ask me. most of us know how to make it so we don’t need the individual components on the sticker
medusas-garden3 points2y ago
For inventory purposes it still helps to ring up the other ingredients necessary.

I don’t charge them for the alternative milk because it’s less than 4 ounces. So I’d hit with almond milk rather than almond milk as if the drink is made with it when it’s not. I think it’s important to ring things up properly for inventory purposes so I also charge them for whatever other components it has rather than just writing an ask me. Eventually though it’ll have to fade out because newer baristas won’t be trained to know those foams and we shouldn’t expect them to.

Those foams have been discontinued and we should not be making them. It was discontinued because it was a quality standard issue. Alternative milks don’t foam properly so that’s why they’re no longer on the menu. If you were to ring it in it’s going to be extra for foam, almond milk, mocha and barista mocha powder (for the mocha) which is essentially another $4 which is why it was so high. The drink itself was like $4 and change for a grande. If people try and order alt milk foams we’re supposed to tell them we can’t make it and offer to put the milk in the drinks.

I don't think this is true. The Weekly Update when they announced they were discontinuing it cited the underwhelming customer response as the reason for retiring it, and gave directions on how to ring it up if customers were still interested in ordering them. Alt-milk foams are still very much offered, as far as I'm aware, they just aren't menu-official items.

Part of the reason they were discontinued was because they weren’t selling and the other part was because of quality standards. There is no option for alt foams on pos or the apps anymore. This is what my DM and ASM have told me.

you also should be charging for the dark cacao powder that goes in the foam as well so she was actually charged less than she should’ve been

I just tell customers “It was removed from our menu, so we have no way to price it without over charging you for the drink”

Just ring up the plain cold foam press the WITH almond milk button since it is less than 4 oz and it won't charge. You will have to charge for mocha unfortunately and press ASK ME and input Choc Almd Foam.
That is how we all collectively decided to do it at our store. It's a huge pain and there should be a way to customize foams since so many people do crazy things with it now.

Here to support this answer. This is how we are doing this in my district. They will be charged the $1 for foam and the 50/60¢ for mocha but not the 70¢ for the milk. Adding the cold foam modifier is very important - this allows us to earn the proper labor for these kinds of items if they are getting ordered a lot at your store.

I hit the button for the Salted Caramel Cold Foam and then do an ask me ‘sub for blah blah.’
