Disregarding availability when scheduling? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Rare_Dragonfruit1885
Hi! So, basically, I was hired a few months ago, and my SM got fired almost immediately after I started. So, we’ve kinda had a couple of neighboring SMs share custody of our store until we get our own.

I have my availability set to certain hours mon-thurs because of classes, and to not work at all on Sundays. Despite this, I have been scheduled every Sunday since new management came in. I talk to them about it every week, and they always say they’ll fix if, but I always end up coming in anyways because I can’t get it covered.

Now, they’re starting to schedule me for afternoons on days that I have class, and it’s really starting to bug me. Up to this point, they- at the very least- respected my classes, but now they aren’t even doing that. I was able to get those shifts covered for this week but now I’m short on hours.

I’m starting to wonder if I should even get my shifts covered because technically they’re outside my availability, and if I should just not show up, because this has been a problem for forever. I’m going to be putting my 2 weeks in anyway to move to a licensed store, but I don’t want to ruin my chances of returning to corporate if that makes sense?

I’m just so tired of asking for the bare minimum and not getting it! Rant over lol

Tell your manager you can only work in your availability one last time. If they continue to schedule outside of it, contact PCC or the district manager. And if you do talk to the district manager maybe bring up the fact your workplace environment is extremely unstable without a real manager.

Honesty, tell em once that it's outside of your availability and you can't come in. If they continue to schedule you on those days just don't show up. It may be a dick move but thy can't do anything about it, and it's their fault for scheduling you like that in the first place. Otherwise they might continue to do it

If you have different SM making the schedule from other stores they can’t keep up and no offense but your store isn’t going to be their top priority. They have their own store to manage and can’t keep up with the availability there so they can’t keep track of yours too. Your best bet is to talk to them. Explain that you’re in school and that you can’t work certain days/hours. Your availability is a general idea as to when you’re able to work not a strict guideline they have to follow. You kind of need to be a little flexible. I really don’t mean to be harsh or mean and I can see where and why you’re frustrated. I’ve had my own scheduling issues so I understand.

The statement “its not a strict guideline” is incorrect, ive seen managers transferred to other stores and almost fired for scheduling partners out of their availability. Although it was repeated even after warnings from a DM . If your manager is scheduling outside of your availability its a big nono

But they can’t always accommodate everyone’s availability. It’s just not plausible. I want weekends off so I say I’m not available doesn’t guarantee I’m going to be off every weekend all weekend. I’m not saying op shouldn’t be upset because school comes first and in this situation they’re not able to do that. Managers do the best they can to accommodate. This is an issue for op.

The issue mainly lies in the fact that i have plenty of coworkers who DO want those hours in the weekday but they schedule me instead. I told one of my shift leads today that I was getting those shifts covered, and she acted like it was the most inconvenient thing I could possibly do. So now I’m on the bad side of my shift leads AND i’m losing hours in the process, when it all could have been avoided by scheduling someone who CAN work that day ://

This is ridiculous just contact pcc and tell them about all this clowning around going on at your store, hopefully they will get someone to call down who actually knows what they are doing. Also any shift who acts like covering another shift is an inconvenience probably shouldn’t be one. After all you could just call in sick and leave them screwed. Only exception is if you have green beans cover for experienced partners, thats not generally acceptable.

You need to talk to your SM. I know you don’t have one just for your store rn but you need to talk to whatever SM is making the schedule.

If your manager approves an availability with weekends off, that is on them. If you ask and they dont approve then its on you to make an adult decision. I am talking directly about availability in terms of what has been approved and it appears OP had their availability approved so they should not be scheduled outside of it NO exception unless they volunteer to cover shifts. I am not sure where you learned scheduling outside of availability was ok but its against policy and our last manager almost got fired for it.
