I was working mid yesterday and of course drive thru was packed by the time I got there. There were only 2 on bar but the drive thru was steady packed the whole time. I feel so horrible bc DT times were around 6 minutes and went up to at most 15 during my shift ... I Was soloing it but im still new. I hate when I hand out a drink then wait for the next car to pull up so i can take their payment and the the little chime goes off and I have to take the next persons order. Also I feel hard of hearing on drive thru. Not that my volume isn't loud enough but the words often seem undecipherable... Especially when they have a accent and I feel bad and inadequate bc of it. I often have to get them to repeat several times or get my partners to clarify for me. The 2 baristas were working hard but I don't understand how people expect to be quick in DT when they order 5+ drinks and multiple food items. Only lady ordered like 15 items, 8 of them food and all warmed at that... Then I realized I forgot to give her one of her drinks when she left it stressed me out so much.... And I gave someone their order and forgot to charge them... They even reminded me but once I took their apple pay, I accidently cancelled the payment and the order was over $20... I feel so stupid for that one. And apparently I did something wrong about recharging this ladies sbux card but then she just... Drove off after complaining abt it??? Idk... And I don't wanna ask for help sometimes cuz I just feel like my partners gon look at me like im stupid. This lady was literally WATCHING me make her drinks thru the glass bc my partners were so busy and still complained like "omg y'all r so slow today, im never coming here again, we been her an hour" (the timer only said 21 minutes but go off queens) Anyways I don't necessarily hate drive thru but it works much better during a busy time when u have 2 people on it...

It sounds like you’re a green bean, and I was just like you when I was new. I put so much pressure on myself to be just as good as my partners who had been there for even just half a year! This job is incredibly stressful at times, but you know what? You did your best. You worked hard, and even though it was so confusing and intense at times, you still finished your shift. One of the biggest things that I want to stress is that you did your best. Your best is going to look different once you gain more experience, but for now as a newbie, just remember that. You can do this!

“Sorry I am still training/new/learning” goes a long way. It takes some green beans 6 months to get bar/drive down. I still dont know what the hell customers say in the drive thru half the time and have to have them repeat it and ive worked at sbux 2 years. You are being to hard on yourself. Also I love the “I am trying to multi task and its not working” response because it lightens the tone and is a good transition.

Well you are working at a coffee shop where people havent had their coffee yet. If you want to make relationships with customers and get on their good side. Learning names is a good start.

I’m sorry your store is so busy and understaffed! And I’m sorry you don’t feel supported by your partners to ask questions without being judged. Just remember that you can’t be expected to be perfect right off the bat! As someone else suggested, if people start yelling at you, be sure to mention your still in training/still learning. And if it really escalates and they are really not happy, let them talk to you shift. You shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of that.
Keep persevering and you’ll get there. It sounds like you are already a lot better than you think if you are soloing drive through and it’s that busy- lots of green beans wouldn’t do that! Try not to be so hard on yourself- you’re doing great.
