Hey all! I know there’s the barista to shift supervisor book, but what are key things you think someone should work on to become a supervisor?

Trust your gut, write an incident report on every customer who yells or gets violent/abusive, and dont be afraid to speak your mind! Its easy to get caught up in the flow of everything and put yourself last. Remember you're still an employee and you shouldnt take on more than you can bare. Best of luck on your new journey :)

Reading all the store communications ex. Weekly updates, now brewing, random alerts, notifications about which technology is going down during store hours for scheduled maintenance, store outages.
It’s mind boggling how often I see a barista ask a shift a question and the shift has no idea what is going on in their store.
Also, be certain you read all the recipes cards and have them memorized, that that really applies to everyone

To be honest good shifts already act as “shifts” long before they are promoted in my opinion. First, baristas who want to promote should be familiar and able to train anyone on any part of any routine. You dont have to be the best in your store but you want to be reliable. Baristas who constantly coach in a positive way to green beans are already on the right track. You should be familiar with your teams strengths and weaknesses. If your manager told you to call the play right now could you? Have you trained other baristas?

I dont think you need to be an expert to be a ssv, in fact I know there are things my ssv dont know because its not written policy. Good supervisors work with their baristas to make the play good and stress low
