UK Customer here. Firstly, just like to say I appreciate all the hard work that you guys do. We have a staff member at my drive thru - I never see her face - and she is always so smiley. She really makes my day. I used to work retail, so understand the sh*t you can get.
My question is, so long as you guys aren't busy and have time to do what I ask, do you prefer me to choose my own drink or are you happy to show off your skills/inventiveness if I asked you to, so making my drink a surprise.

some baristas are more open to experimentation more than others! personally i love to show people creative drinks that arent too wild expensive lol. go when your store isnt busy, probably after the early afternoon and go into the cafe and ask if they’d be down to do that! just dont ask for surprise drinks in DT bc the DT is timed lol

No - sorry - it’s ok if you give some parameters and ask for suggestions and you make the ultimate decision, it is your money. But to ask us to make the decision is asking too much in a context where you can ask for it to be remade if you don’t like it. Plus the whole exchange has to literally take seconds because we only have seconds to make your drink and heat your food, we are held to a standard of 50 seconds from when you order to when you reach the window

Before I got promoted to SSV I was a drive thru 24/7 barista! Even when busy if someone is super chill and nice when asking for a surprise drink I’ll happily get something rung up. Usually I’ll ask the customers preferences (sweet/not sweet/dairy or nondairy/coffee or no/etc.) and then use that info to whip something up. I also ask my fellow baristas their fave drink combos or even use mine!
