i freaking HATE working 5.75 hour shifts and only getting one (1) ten minute break. i feel so tired and deeply upset bc they only care about how much labor my body can produce and it's all i can think about my whole shift. i already told my new manager that i Can't do them when i started crying while doing DTO a few weeks ago, but here i am now, working three 5.75 hour shifts in a row, friday-sunday :))))))))) what the frick, man.......... do other stores do this? have y'all struggled with this and/or gotten through it?? idk man :-////// it should be illegal! 😀
yukhentai59 points2y ago
my manager does this when we dont have enough labor hours for everyone to get full shifts but my manager and ssvs always let us take two tens or a twenty here and there if we are really tired/hungry. not to sound condescending but lately ive been eating breakfast before all my shifts and it makes me feel so much better while working. like just more clear headed and then when my ten rolls around i have water and a snack, and im in a much better mood than usual (bc im soo cranky sometimes lol). so yeah maybe ask if you can be rotated around so you’re not burnt out in one place, and try to eat before + make sure you’re drinking some water throughout the day!
twinkus [OP]18 points2y ago
this will help me get through this weekend, thank u!!! <3 ur not being condescending, partner!! 🤠
Ok-Bowl43925 points2y ago
My first Sm said if we wanted he would schedule us for 6 hours but technically you get paid less cause you’re off the floor for an extra 15 minutes unpaid
NOTcreative-3 points2y ago
Yeah there’s a couple factors including the having you stay for 6 hours but only getting paid for 5.5. Another is if the block is 6 hours and you have 6 partners on the floor, playcallers have to worry about running 4 hours worth of breaks so a 6 partner play is mostly a 5 partner play. If OP is comfortable with shifts <5.5 hours SM might be able to accommodate (hopefully)
Aliciarox111899 points2y ago
I bring cereal in a reusable container just in case. Then grab some milk and boom food
daringwallflowr3 points2y ago
This is genius! don't know why I never thought of it! Thank you. Will definitely be using this trick! 🥳
Aliciarox111892 points2y ago
I'll send a picture with ideas if someone tells me how
MonstrousGiggling2 points2y ago
Can upload to imgur then post the link
MonstrousGiggling2 points2y ago
Breakfast is such simple but effective advice. Its easy to forget to literally fuel ourselves and for many of us Starbucks is mentally and physically draining.
Caffeine isn't real energy either so its very important to fuel up! Not condescending at all!
jor100534 points2y ago
Yeah, I’d rather work an 8 than a 5.75. I always think about how by the time I’m clocking out from a 5.75 shift, the shift I opened with has already had a 10, a 30, and about to start their second 10. How is that fair?
Lilium81611 points2y ago
I'll take the 5.75 over an 8.
Every. Single. Time.
I'm a SSV so I'm constantly having to sacrifice my own breaks for business needs/my partners breaks.
Just last weekend worked 8h Fri, sat, and sun. Didn't get anything more than my first 10 each day.
DaWitcherr3 points2y ago
For real... I work at a pretty high volume (yet understaffed) drive thru and I mostly work 8 hrs shifts as a lead, and I rarely take my 10s... mostly cause it would hurt me more if I did as far as giving out other breaks goes and getting stuff done
jor10052 points2y ago
Soooo true. Part of why I’ll never be a shift. The pay does is not enough for the shit you gotta put up with and the sacrifices you have to make.
sunflowercupcakee4 points2y ago
I wish I worked at a store that had second tens
twinkus [OP]3 points2y ago
i knoooooow!!!! it's crazed
dragonfruitte24 points2y ago
i hate those so much!!!! i kept getting scheduled for those and told my manager that it was really unfair and that i can't handle only having a ten and she got a huge attitude and was like YOU KNOW EVERYONE ELSE HERE TODAY IS WORKING 8 HOURS!!?!? and I was literally like yeah and that's actually better because they get two tens and a 30... and she just glared at me and stormed off. so i changed my availability so i am only available for 5 hours on days i work lol i mostly get 4 hour shifts now
Apprehensive-Ad20966 points2y ago
Wait you guys get two 10’s?!????
Aliciarox111894 points2y ago
Generally (depending on the laws etc) you get a min of one 10. Then over 5.75 ish (managers discretion) you would add 30 mins UNPAID. Then 7 hours+ you get another 10min break
When you get to like 10 hrs you I believe the process repeats (I did 14 or 16 hours last month in a day but between 2 stores so it a little different).
Cheekclapperkneeslap1 points2y ago
Two tens???
oatmealstan6 points2y ago
what state are you in?? idk if it differs by state but i’m in WA and if i had a 5.75 hour shift i’d get a lunch and a ten :/ i’ve always gotten a lunch for any shift 5 hours or longer. it can be kind of annoying if i’m scheduled for a 5.25 hour shift, like 4-9:15, because then i feel like i might as well just work from 4-8:45 since i’m only gonna be on the floor for 4.75 hours anyway. but i couldn’t imagine working 5.75 hours without at least a second ten. i’m so sorry :(
baristabiitch5 points2y ago
I just moved from WA to TX and that change was hard to adjust- especially when they run your 10 2 hours into your shift so you’re there for almost 4 hours ready to die
oatmealstan4 points2y ago
wow i had no idea that breaks were so different in other places!! i assumed it was the same (or at least nearly the same) company-wide. i guess i’m gonna be living in WA as long as i’m working for starbucks then lmao
cherrythot1 points2y ago
We get 2 tens for anything over 5 hours, then we get a lunch and ten over 6.5 hours and 2 tens and a lunch over that. I’m in Michigan.
MonstrousGiggling1 points2y ago
Oh this goes for pay too! My friend id moving and transferring and she is getting like a 3 dollar pay cut. Albeit the new state has a lower cost of living but still it was a big shock to some of us.
meowdrian2 points2y ago
I went from Wa to Tn and felt that change too. Was rough. The pay decrease was insane as well. They had told me I would just get a cost of living adjustment but boy was that incorrect. 😅
baristabiitch2 points2y ago
R I G H T like my got cut in HALF
twinkus [OP]2 points2y ago
i work in minnesota. i'm glad they have more protections for u in WA!! <3
RoaringDragonite4 points2y ago
Oof. I’m so sorry. I know this sounds ridiculous. But I actually love the 5.75 hour shifts. I hate having to sit down for half an hour unpaid when I could just go home half an hour earlier.
That being said. I know I’m not the only one who loves those 5.75 hour shifts. Your manager should keep note of who likes what shifts and try to make a schedule that works for everyone (to the best of their availability) I hope your manager can work with you! Good luck!
scarlettmuffin73 points2y ago
I only get 5.75 shifts. It is the worst thing I've ever experienced. It's not that I can't work that long without breaks, it's the fact that they specifically schedule you like that so you don't get a lunch that pisses me off. It's bad enough our stores riding our asses about our drive-thru times and to just add insult to injury like that is very frustrating.
ephemereaux3 points2y ago
I’ve been at the bux for a month and regularly get 5.75s with only one 10, the one time I got two 10s I felt so treated 🤣
LindaFromAccounting_3 points2y ago
I prefer this instead of getting scheduled 6 hours and only getting paid for 5.5. I like to be making money so I dont like having to clock out for meals 🥴
so-rayray1 points2y ago
Heard! Agree! 👍🏼❤️
wifeypoopoo3 points2y ago
I'm so over block schedules. I just want 8 hour shifts so I only have to wake up before the sun is up a few times a week 😭😭
TheFriendlyFeminist2 points2y ago
Yes yes yes I am you
cherrythot1 points2y ago
It depends what time I’m scheduled for and what day. Like a 5.75 opening shift on a Sunday? A blessing. A 5.75 mid shift on a Saturday? I will leap from the roof.
luckysilverdragon1 points2y ago
Yeah my licensed store does that too. This week I worked from 2-8, 3-8, then 2-8 again back to back. They give me the option of taking a 15 minute break during these shifts but I usually don’t because the process of closing properly alone is so difficult (I usually close alone at my store). If I’m not actively attending to customers it’s more helpful for me to be constantly getting stuff done and work toward my close. Sitting for 15 minutes when I’m the only person working is a waste of time and more stressful for me than it is relaxing.
Sad_Post01 points2y ago
As a shift, it's really hard to run a bunch of 30s. At my old store only shifts worked 8 hours. Baristas would work 5.75 hour shifts
the1noir1 points2y ago
You can always ask for a second 10. Depending on how you ask for it your ssv should be understanding. Those shifts really do suck, as someone else already said, eating something before your shift and drinking water really does help a ton, even a small protein shake should be enough if you aren’t much of a eater in the morning. (That’s how I am)
He11oboyo1 points2y ago
My store has been doing block scheduling since Christmas so all of us at my store are feeling that and the only people who get a half are people working 8 hour shifts since no one else works a 6 hour shift with our block schedules.
josiemoppinnn1 points2y ago
i get scheduled on 4.75 hour shifts ALL THE TIME. while i feel like it’s almost better for my mental and psychical health to not be there for up to 8/10 hours, i always end up staying past the 5 hour mark just because they need the extra help so it’s almost USELESS to schedule me that shift just so i don’t have to get a break
cozyboy2491 points2y ago
I believe They do it so they don’t have to give you a lunch.
cbourgeois481 points2y ago
this is my schedule now literally everyday so i just take 15 mins instead of 10s idc lmao
ah090221 points2y ago
My manager does this and I think it's fucked honestly. I'd rather stay the extra time to get a lunch in
leekyabloh1 points2y ago
OMG YES
dthomp08061 points2y ago
Yup my sm does this a well. It's bs. And then she gives you your 10 an hour and a half in. Like wtf? I've never had a manager do this on a consistent basis until her. And i don't care that it's more work for shifts to have to give more lunches if you're scheduled 6 hours. That's the job you signed up for.
chellyp241 points2y ago
In Canada we get 2 15s and a 30 for 6.5-8h, a 15 and a 30 for 5h
deadfliesinsummer1 points2y ago
my store’s whole morning shift (besides the 2 openers) is 5.75. Did 7 in a row, one day off, tomorrow is day 3 of this 6 in a row. Gotta love getting close to summer
Cooch_21191 points2y ago
I usually get 7-8, today I had a 10 and about halfway through nothing felt real anymore so I guess there’s an upside 🤷🏻♀️
Not_a_necromorph1 points2y ago
still on block scheduling, but pretty much every time block only gets 5.75
throwawaygarbage33331 points2y ago
y’all are getting 2 10s on your 8 hours ??🥲🥲🥲
PandaVike1 points2y ago
Honestly I’d rather the 5.75 than scheduled for a 6 but only get paid for 5.5 but that’s just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Catsarecoolish1 points2y ago
I used to get these all the time! My shifts always ended up giving me 2 tens or a 15 anyways cause they felt bad
Christyawn1 points2y ago
i know how frustrating this is because it’s all i used to get as a barista. i didn’t understand why they would do that and i viewed it as a selfish thing. When i became a shift i finally understood why. It is so hard to give breaks and keep everything maintained especially if you work at an insanely busy store. it sucks so much and i always feel for that one person and i usually try to give them a second break or give them a twenty instead of a ten. if i can’t give them multiple/longer breaks then i’m losing my lunch as well. But now i see both sides of it and get why sometimes you gotta do it to make sure everyone who has a longer shift gets their lunch.
OneRoseDark1 points2y ago
I always give two 10s on those shifts. Only on a 5.75 though.
withsoapandskin1 points2y ago
Wait y’all don’t get lunches working 5.75 hours?? At my store, and in my state, it’s mandated that if you work more than five hours you get a 30 minute lunch break. That’s insane and I seriously can’t believe this! That’s such bs!
baristaabitchh1 points2y ago
I don’t know what your labor laws are but in my state it’s required to have a 30 minute lunch if working over 5 hours
Gameb0i61 points2y ago
You don’t get a lunch? Is that legal?
KaleSalad2011 points2y ago
No, in a lot of states if you’re over the age of 18 and work a shift under 6 hours you don’t get a lunch, it’s like this in my state and it sucks
Gameb0i62 points2y ago
Oh. That sucks. CA is 5 hrs and you get a lunch break.
simplemina1 points2y ago
Bruh I live far from work and thats all I get....like just don't schedule me or give me a long shitf for like 2 3 days tbh I dunno its not worth it ...
KaleSalad2011 points2y ago
I literally will make my 10 a 15 for those shifts and I do not feel guilty about prioritizing my health in this way, like it’s literally just an extra 5 minutes but it helps and they can survive on the floor without you for an extra five minutes and my supervisors know this and they’re cool with it
phillipniemann1 points2y ago
I get that it sucks but you do get paid more technically if you would have just gotten a lunch instead.
juiceyluicy1 points2y ago
I think maybe I have leverage with my manager bc I’ve worked here 6 months longer than anyone else and am one of the stronger partners and she’s scared of me quitting bc we have really really high turn over. I told her I only want to work 4 days a week and want 20-30 hours. Idc if she gives me the high or low end as long as I don’t work more than 4 days a week. I usually get like... one MAYBE 5.5 hour shift then.
TheChemcialAce1 points2y ago
My entire time working at my store that was the most my manager would ever schedule me for. I think I had 1 6hr shift she gave me on accident, otherwise it was always 5.75hr shifts on dto even though my manager and both of my shifts knew im hearing impaired 🙃
Webshooter381 points2y ago
Those are the only kind of shift I get now. I'm at a licensed store though and breaks are 15 minutes instead of 10
moohooh1 points2y ago
I hate the way starbucks schedule ppl. They sometimes schedule me for 4.5hrs like whaa
dayahorne1 points2y ago
I'm so sorry that happens to you. I completely understand.
My store there will be three or four people in the morning.
Two people who in the afternoon and one closer alone for 7 hours and one break.
PartyTimeQueen1 points2y ago
I literally hate this kind of shift, it feels illegal. I wish you luck with those shifts, stay strong!!!
LatterRooster1 points2y ago
I just changed my availability to only allow a max of 5 hours 😅
LatterRooster2 points2y ago
Also, I might add that I asked my manager to not schedule me for shifts like these because of the injuries I’ve had and I have 26 screws in my ankle that make it hard to stand forever with no actual rest... A 10 min break is useful but not accommodating when it’s given after working only ONE hour to ensure our peak has enough people on the floor...instead of hiring someone else !🤣 Her response: “we do that on purpose so our labor numbers are low. 🤷🏻♀️🖕” IM A WORK-HORSE WORKING IN A CAFFEINATED STABLE HOUSE.
stagstar2 points2y ago
brooooo FUCK giving breaks right at the start of your shift. I used to work sundays and my half would be 30 minutes in and I would rarely get my tens because we never had enough staff. those 8 hrs were the worst and I'm infinitely grateful I transferred out of that train wreck
