i’ve been working at the same store for almost three years (252****) and as much as i’ve loved it, i’m at my breaking point.
i just got promoted to shift a couple days ago because two shifts (T and M) put in their two weeks. i’m happy that i’m finally moving up some, but i’m more sad to see them go. these shifts have worked with me the entire time i’ve been there, and i had formed a friendship with one of them (T). i thought sunday was going to be her last day, but shit hit the fan.
as i walked in to my covid coach yesterday, she broke the news to me that my favorite shift (P) that was one of the two reasons for staying had just got fired for extremely stupid reasons that couldn’t be proven and today is her last day. i nearly broke down right there because i honestly don’t know if i’m going to be able to handle this new position without him; i thought he was going to be my trainer for night closes. he and three of my other coworkers are (or now were) the only reason i want to stay at this job, and now that he’s gone i’ve only got a few baristas that actually enjoy my presence and fully support me.
i’m angry at my manager and dm for the way they’ve handled this situation. it was all shady from the start, and i knew in the end P would leave once T left, but at the end of the year. i just wasn’t ready for this all to happen at once. i guess this was the plan from the start, and it makes me sick. i really want to leave but i feel like i have an obligation to stay because of my recent promotion. it’s just going to be extremely hard because now my store only has three tenured shifts and we’re having two transfers and an outside hire replacing the shifts that have left.
so basically i’m just upset and not wanting to be at this store anymore but i also can’t transfer to another store. hopefully this goes better than i expect.

If I were in your position, I’d still accept the promotion and start looking for other jobs. Having a supervisor position on a resume makes you more desirable to other companies and also could lead to your starting wage being increased due to experience. Hang in there, bud ❤️ Remember that you’re doing the best you can with what you’ve got

thank you for this :) i’ve applied at a few different places since i told myself i’d leave if i didn’t get promoted so if i get a call back then it’s probably time for my departure then lol

I second this. Take the promotion and leave immediately. Literally as soon as you can. Being a new shift is one thing at a store that’s already settled and you’re the only “new factor”
At a store where literally the entire SSV team is doing a total rollover... maybe it’ll go really well! But I wouldn’t wait to find out. Never hurts to have other cards in your hand even if they never make it to the table.

Honestly stick around for the supervisor training and a handful of shifts if you can just for the knowledge and experience, so many of the skills you learn transfer over to other job positions! Then job hunt till you find something awesome for you! that's just my opinion, best of luck to you moving forward, you're amazing! ❤️

thanks for this, it was definitely my plan regardless of the situation <3 lots of love to you, you’re amazing as well

If your SM and DM did that to them, they can and will do it to anyone. You don’t owe it to anyone and don’t sip the Kool-Aid too long. Been there done that and now that I have moved on, life is so much better without the siren.

I don’t work there anymore, but I remember a new manager came in and “felt the need to change the culture.” One by one all of the OG baristas started getting fired for dumb reasons and before I knew it, I (a strong barista bar wise at the time) was surrounded by high school kids, who aren’t bad, but it’s their first job so there’s a huge learning curve. They asked me about becoming a shift and I got the hell out of there lol

i completely understand that. we have so many new hires now and it’s complete chaos. for nights there’s only three baristas that know what’s going on and how to run a store, and in total it’s 14 out of the 30 people employed. i’ve wanted to be a shift for a while now but i know it’s going to be a shit show with how things are going. you made a smart move lol

First and foremost do whatever you want, you owe nothing to anyone. I’ve seen to many shifts strung along for YEARS being told they would be promoted to Asm. Sbucks is amazing at keeping all of us loyal to the siren and somehow getting us to put the siren first, that’s not how it works, gotta put yourself first.
Second thing, you will do fine on closes by yourself. I’ve seen so many shifts think ‘This store is going to collapse once I’m gone’ in reality, it won’t and it doesn’t. It may be a shit show for 3-4 weeks but it gets better, it always does. This will actually make you a stronger shift, and in general a better worker/supervisor. Trial by fire is always a strong shaper of character and work ethic! Also use this as a time to work on saying ‘no’ and keeping expectations/ balance in your life. I have seen way to many shifts want to be ‘the go to shift’ don’t do it, when you are off the clock, you are off. Don’t come in to bail out a shitty manager, leave work at the door!
You got this! And in 3 months you won’t recognize yourself! 🤘🏽

gosh this is really encouraging, thank you so much!!!! i don’t plan on staying for more than a couple more years (or so i hope), but i really hope this’ll be a fun and formative time for myself :) i’m one of the main closers as it is so thankfully i know a good portion of how to run closes, so i’ll probably make it lol. but regardless thanks for this you’re awesome ❤️

If you’re a normal closer, you already have it in the bag, remember always close down early, no matter what anyone says lol.
