Not allowed to call out when I was recovering from covid vaccine? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hecaete47
I got the second dose of Moderna on a Tuesday. I had Wednesday and Thursday off already for classes. On Friday, I was still MISERABLE. My arm was in pain and I had just gotten over nausea and a light fever.

I called to call out half an hour before my shift, right when I woke up. Perhaps I should've done it earlier, but I was hoping I would've recovered by that point so I didn't think to call until I woke up. I know the cat pay only covers 4 hrs of pay with 48 hours after your vaccine, but I was hoping to use regular sick leave. The manager yelled at me and demanded I come in :( She then was frustrated that she couldn't toss me wherever and put me on Front/CS (well, she said just front but we didn't have enough folks for also having a CS so that was part of the expectation) (which made my arm hurt more) right before she left. Thankfully the shift realized how much of a dumbass choice that was and moved me back to DT where I didn't have to move around as much.

The entire time she just kept saying, "You just need to move the arm more!" Oh really? I didn't know you had a medical degree now! Because what the person at CVS who STUCK THE NEEDLE IN MY ARM was that I should REST and HYDRATE.

nah you shouldn’t have gone in. if you’re sick you’re sick, you don’t even have to explain why. just say you have a cold next time honestly.

they shouldn’t be guilt tripping you into coming in when you’re unwell, especially during covid

It wasn't even a guilt trip, it was straight up YELLING at me. "We've had a ton of call-ins this week, I've worked 6 days this week, you need to come in." Like, when I got there, a couple of my coworkers who got in earlier than my scheduled shift noted how pissed off I'd made the manager :( and I have social anxiety so it really really stressed me out so I went in.

bye i would literally quit.

i’m very sorry you got pressured into that. i hope you’re feeling okay.

No cap, I have a draft of a letter of resignation on my computer. Multiple partners have left recently. She’s also (with the other SMs) rejected my attempts to transfer out because she is buddies with most of the SMs in the area.

I’m mostly terrified of not having a steady source of income (my second job only gives at most 20 hours a week) but don’t have time to job hunt while doing classes. Rip

That’s nuts had a similar scenario yesterday except I went in and was like “yea I feel awful after my second shot lol” and everyone was telling me to go home and my SM didn’t make a big deal about it and even told me we get 4hrs of paid time off for the recovery period so look into it.

I’m so happy that your SM supported you as Starbucks has tried to make happen. That’s exactly what should happen! I really hope you’re feeling better after the second dose- it really knocks you out!!

The leadership at my store (including SSVs) has been very pro-plague (one SSV is even anti-vax yikes) and refused to send home sick partners. Including (just since the start of ‘21) someone still recovering from covid but testing negative, someone with pink eye (until they got formally diagnosed), me with period cramps and now the second shot, someone with a common cold twice, and someone with strep.

Surprisingly, there hasn’t been a covid outbreak in the store yet.

Your store manager was absolutely wrong and if that ever happens again don’t go in and call ethics and compliance because if you are feeling sick you should not be at work, especially during a whole pandemic. For all your manager knows you could have gotten COVID, not to mention while you were at work with weakened immune you were more susceptible to catching something and that is not fair to you as it puts your physical health at risk and also takes a heavy toll on your mental health. Hope you’re doing better now ❤️

Thank you :(

She also snapped in the ENTIRE STORE GROUP CHAT at a VERY NEW partner who called out sick saying he should've anticipated needing to get the shift covered (when he definitely had OTHER THINGS ON HIS MIND while puking his guts out) and a snappy reminder that the group chat isn't an acceptable place to call out (again, HE'S NEW, literally only been here a handful of weeks. Maybe the MANAGER should've ensured he knew this policy). She literally kicked him when he was already down.

There was a recent weekly update that said side effects from getting the vaccine are expected so it’s not an excusable absence the same way that just being sick is. In other words, you would be responsible for getting your shift covered. As an ssv, I got in trouble for letting someone call in as a result of vaccine symptoms.

lmfao that's bullshit (not what you said, but Starbucks' position on this). Everyone reacts differently to vaccines and someone may be losing out on significant pay if they react well and could've made the shifts that they prematurely got covered by others.

right?? if i feel like i’m about to die because of the vaccine side effects i’m calling out, fuck what starbucks thinks. having a sick partner on the floor is worse than being short staff imo, because not only can they not perform to the best the can, but that’s putting others at risk of being sick too.
