Transferring as a trans person (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GeeSuspended
So I am a trans woman who has been medically transitioning for sometime but essentially closeted outside of that (i.e. I don't live as a woman). I started working at Starbucks to fund surgeries that could remove my anxieties around passing, but I'm planning on presenting before that point even though it terrifies me. I live and work in a very red state, but am luckily trying to move/transfer to probably the most liberal part soon, so there's that...

I guess what I am asking is, for any trans partners, what has been your experience transitioning while working here? In my mind I think I can make it work to where my current store won't know about this (except for telling my SM when I speak to them about transferring) and that my new store will only know me as my chosen name... but I increasingly feels like that won't be the case and I'll always have to out myself in some way. I hate it and it makes me super stressed... it's also stressful too cause the odds of me actually passing when I've never really presented is basically impossible. Please help!

(Also I know passing is a terrible concept. However I am concerned for my safety... hence living as my AGAB even though I came out like 4 years ago.)

hi! one of my coworkers is a trans woman, and i'm nonbinary! you have to provide your deadname on official forms, but there's actually a way to establish a "preferred name" that appears in the system instead of your legal one! you don't have to disclose to anyone that you're trans until you're ready.

customers can be a nightmare with misgendering (i live in a swing state so even in this more liberal area there's still some miserable transphobic bastards lmao) but most of my coworkers are great about using the correct pronouns. if you're worried about being misgendered by coworkers, maybe pick up some pronoun pins from the coffeegear website. a lot of cis partners at my store wear them, which is great because i feel like mine stands out less. this may or may not apply, but if you feel safe confiding in your new SM before you officially transfer, i recommend it so that they can introduce you to everyone at your new store using your correct name and your pronouns!

wishing you the best of luck, friend!

I just transferred and I’m trans FTM. I had already started hormone therapy by the time I started at Starbucks (8 months), but due to complications getting my medication in the area I lived in (very conservative) I moved. I didn’t have many issues, I called the store and had the managers number so after my transfer was complete I sent her a quick text mentioning it. If your name in the system isn’t your preferred name I believe you can change that through the partner hub (I’m not sure) and that should eliminate any need to know your birth name. It might appear on some transfer documents so the SM of your new location will see it (along with your DM), but no one besides her. She shouldn’t disclose it to anyone else and if she does you should contact Partner Support. I have the same issue in regards to passing, the concept is terrible and I wish I didn’t care or limit my self expression in order to be gendered correctly. But I find that the company in general is very supportive of LGBTQ+ partners. The two stores I’ve worked at have been mostly lgbtq+ even in the conservative area I worked in. I wish you all the luck

To be clean you're MTF correct? I have a link i would like to share with you but I don't want to see something that might trigger you if I'm wrong.

I understand how expensive surgeries are here in the US but I found $1 that can be used with a bra in the meantime. If you're not comfortable wearing a bra in public you could wear them at home and it could help you get used to the feeling of a bra and more weight on your chest.

Thank you for link! I've been on hormones long enough to where forms are a little more complicated, but I appreciate your help 🙂

What state are you in? I’m in Arkansas and we have 2 trans at my store. We are in a very red state. Is there anyone that you could confide in at your store right now? Honestly, it sounds like you are insecure about your identity and that’s totally normal FWIW regardless of gender identity. We often think less of ourselves than other people actually see us. So here’s what goes down in our store. One of my fellow shifts is trans. I will change her name to Sabrina. Sabrina is her chosen name and thankfully at Starbucks you are to be addressed by your preferred name regardless in store. As a store, we are supportive and go out of our way to correct any misgendering on the spot by customers or partners. We are also aware that being on DT is triggering because her voice doesn’t match to some people so she is misgendered. We will go out of our way to protect her and never put her in a situation that is triggering or hurts her mentally. I’m really hoping you find your team that can have your back. I would visit the stores you are considering at different times of the day to check out the vibe. Don’t blindly transfer and not know what you will be dealing with. That will only further hurt your mental health. I hope you find your people🤞

Another thing I should add is like I think I'd be fine with staying closeted until I get certain surgeries... it's hard for me but it would make my life easier I think. Pretty much everyone I tell this too tells me I should just come out. But that would be an option where I probably wouldn't transfer or something.
