Random Things I wish I knew before I started(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cringeqween13
- don't capitalize the first letter of your security question during on boarding - as someone with small wide feet its gonna be a pain in the butt to find good shoes (its also expensive) - between masks, ovens, blenders, and headsets you basically have to yell to be heard - morning shift green beans at my store get no bar time - expect to be understaffed - don't eat too much on your breaks or lunch or you'll feel naseaous when you get back on the floor and are running back and forth - drink water before your shift because you won't have time to drink during your shift unless you CS - you're gonna have to fight the urge to pet every dog that comes through the drive thru
What do you wish you knew before starting?
eat-reddit-tv157 points2y ago
You will smell(like coffee) after every shift. Even if you don’t do any brewing.
cilantroprince79 points2y ago
yes and it’s not even a good coffee smell, it’s like a thick milk and syrup + a little coffee smell. i have to wash my hands multiple times when i get home to feel clean and take off all my work clothes 😂
rudebii27 points2y ago
I'd open, then go home, shower, take a nap, wake up, go back into my car, hours later, and it still smells like the bar's trash bin.
t3ddyursa10 points2y ago
And that smell is like a guava passionfruit drink with a hint of every inclusion.
ahbeeceeess7 points2y ago
No matter how many times I wash my hands in a shift, they almost ALWAYS smell faintly like syrup
drinkliquidclocks17 points2y ago
This is my favorite, I don't mind it at all 😁
cringeqween13 [OP]14 points2y ago
It okay unless you don't wash your clothes with a day or two or it'll smell like sour milk
midgethepuff11 points2y ago
If you spill milk on yourself yeah. I wear jeans for multiple shifts in a row and they never smell like that, I wash them if I get something on them like syrup.
cringeqween13 [OP]8 points2y ago
Sadly as someone who sweats excessively the only thing I can get away with wearing for multiple shifts is my hat
drinkliquidclocks3 points2y ago
I work at a low volume store so I never really spill on myself except for mocha or matcha powder on my apron lol
philosopher_cat_lady3 points2y ago
Me too!
cringeqween13 [OP]8 points2y ago
Or hot chocolate if you make mocha and get mocha powder all over yourself like I inevitably do every time.
Anotherface955 points2y ago
I smelled so much like coffee that my cat smelled like espresso. It was the cutest!!
Aliciarox111892 points2y ago
I carry perfume in my bag for this reason!
lavendersigil46 points2y ago
Use risstero (I know I fucked the spelling) shots for your coffee on your break because it will make your stomach hurt less.
bbleinbach6 points2y ago
Why are they easier on your stomach?
lavendersigil9 points2y ago
Arrested extraction. It’s finely ground bean and less water, therefore a smaller shot in a shorter amount of time. It’s less bitter than a normal shot and from what I read from other partners who have GI issues or ulcers like me, it’s easier for them to digest. I usually order my shots decaf ristretto.
skylinegtrr326 points2y ago
Same here ristretto ftw. I wondered why I loved the flat white so much even before becoming a barista and learning that it had ristretto shots during training lol. Swapped to oat milk too instead of whole. Not lactose intolerant but I think the oat milk is a bit smoother on the stomach when you’re drinking a bunch of it all the time.
bbleinbach3 points2y ago
Nice. Cool stuff
TJW3515 points2y ago
This is great advice, thank you!
TJW35146 points2y ago
All of these are so true lol. Some additions could be: 1) Take initiative. I know it can be scary as a new person, because you aren’t sure what exactly to start on, but say there is a stack of dishes in the sink and your trainer has abandoned you for a bit. It’s much better to be found attempting something productive than be found standing around because you didn’t know what to do. (That’s mostly for really new people who haven’t been shown the check list for CS or something.) 2) Invest in Sharpies. Don’t buy them at the dollar store, you’ll pay $1 per sharpie. You can buy them in a big pack at any other store for way less. 3) For the love of all that is holy don’t wear a long sleeve. You will sweat your butt off and dip the sleeves in every puddle on the counter, as well as probably snag the mocha or chai pumps
eat-reddit-tv28 points2y ago
Why isn’t your SM buying sharpies for everyone?
TJW35111 points2y ago
Maybe because we have a super high turnover rate and they don’t want to have to keep buying them? No idea honestly
RoaringDragonite28 points2y ago
Don’t waste your money on sharpies. Ask your SM for one. Literally every day. Ask your SM for one.
Aliciarox111895 points2y ago
Yep I do and I have a collection
cringeqween13 [OP]8 points2y ago
Also if you're like me and chafe between your thighs a lot keep a stick of deodorant or baby powder in your bag so you can reapply it. And the long sleeves thing! They also get so dirty
TJW3513 points2y ago
Yes, the deodorant thing!! Chunky thighs are a curse lol I buy the body glide anti-chafe balm on Amazon which works amazing, but if I happen to forget it at home, deodorant can be a life saver.
cringeqween13 [OP]4 points2y ago
I also wear black scrub pants because you can't wear leggings and my thick thighs will wear down some jeans
clumsycalico2 points2y ago
Interesting that some of you hate wearing long sleeves! It seemed like most of my store wore them all winter. I agree it can get hot but it was only ever a problem a few times. We had a cold snowy winter so maybe we all just like to be cozy lol
the42ndfl00r4 points2y ago
Taking initiative can get you scolded sometimes. There's a shift at my store who is a huge stickler for staying in your role.
HippieinBlack38 points2y ago
I wish I would have known that morning green beans get no bar time. I was so excited to be on bar and ended up on register. I thought it was really my fault and I didn’t get much bar time until I switched to nights a couple months ago
cringeqween13 [OP]10 points2y ago
My SM is gonna break blocks in a few weeks but I'm kinda nervous about working nights because night shift aren't as by the book since our SM rarely works nights
HippieinBlack12 points2y ago
I love working nights so much. It’s almost, dare I say fun. I like the people I work with and they help a lot. I’m sure you’ll do great!
philosopher_cat_lady7 points2y ago
I've been working at Starbucks for a year and a half and barely ever get bar time
silentwhisperer14844 points2y ago
i love being on bar, but i hate how often i’m on bar. honestly, i would trade with you if i could lol. i once was on bar for 6 hours, 3 days straight. only break i got was being on my 10. it was torture and i was soooo pissed off
philosopher_cat_lady1 points2y ago
I know, sometimes I think I'm lucky to not have to work bar all the time. The thing is, the way to make a workplace fair is to assign each partner to each position and task at an even rate. That doesn't happen at my store. I also get frustrated if I'm on bar for a long time (it rarely happens, but it happened the other day). There's a Starbucks guideline that partners are supposed to change positions every two hours, so after two hours if I'm feeling overworked, I'll ask for a position change. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't.
silentwhisperer14841 points2y ago
wait...that’s really policy??? because there are a couple of shift leads that i have that say they don’t see a problem with it and we should stop feeling so entitled. my mind is blown right now lol wth. everyone else is good about moving people around, idk why it’s just a couple that think they’re above everything
HippieinBlack2 points2y ago
Dam that’s awful!! I’m so sorry

rxdc122034 points2y ago
wait why shouldnt you capitalize the first letter of your security question 😳
cringeqween13 [OP]17 points2y ago
When you have to sign type it a million different times it makes it a pain in the butt
gavinatoristhatyou13 points2y ago
easier to type
snowflakenecklace7 points2y ago
security questions aren’t case sensitive
cringeqween13 [OP]16 points2y ago
They are
snowflakenecklace17 points2y ago
really??? i feel like i’ve signed in with caps lock on and it messed up my password but not my security stuff
edit: just logged in twice, same security question. first time all lowercase, second time first letter capitalized. they’re not case sensitive. passwords are tho
arcanalalune13 points2y ago
No they aren't. Sometimes I capitalize it and sometimes I don't. It makes no difference
MatchingColors6 points2y ago
They are not case sensitive, I am certain of that.
cringeqween13 [OP]3 points2y ago
Maybe they changed it but when i first started it was case sensitive. Good to know that I dont need to capitalize it anymore
mushroomappreciation26 points2y ago
You are always sticky......always.
BusyLeek235125 points2y ago
I wish I knew not to apply in the first place
lycorisette24 points2y ago
I wish I knew that it would be nothing like my previous barista experience at an independent coffee shop - & that my barista skills weren’t valued because the machine did everything automatically & volume/speed was valued over quality every time.
rudebii14 points2y ago
"Baristas" at starbucks are machine operators now, have been for a while, at least 10 years, when they removed the La Marz semi-autos from all the stores.
When I was there all the shots were dosed, tamped, and timed by hand and to order, like a traditional espresso cafe.
cringeqween13 [OP]7 points2y ago
I feel like the closest you could get to a "real" barista experience is at cafe only stores
rudebii10 points2y ago
You won’t really really learn about pulling espresso at the bux. Probably won’t learn how to do cuppings, blend roasts, etc. You don’t learn any pantry cooking skills because sandwiches come pre-made and ready-to-heat.
Starbucks designs their menu to be as proprietary as possible, so almost anything they’d teach you about coffee preparation is worthless elsewhere.
rollerderbydyke7 points2y ago
Even some dunkin donuts locations have proper espresso machines now
I_prefer_naps3 points2y ago
Cafe only barista here... and its still more like fast food than my experience as a barista at an independent coffee shop. All about getting the customer in and out, less about crafting espresso drinks.
_circuts3 points2y ago
And even then not really. When that peak hits its chop chop
DieLawnUwU21 points2y ago
I pet every dog that comes through the drive thru (if the owners are ok with it) I just wash my hands afterwards
elrobolobo17 points2y ago
I find Dr. Martens super comfortable for my paddle feet. Or Vans Ultrarange Evo and Sk8 His.
cringeqween13 [OP]10 points2y ago
Ive heard a lot of good things about dr martens but they're a bit pricey and because I'm a girl with wide feet I prefer to not buy online (but there's also only one store in my town that carries dr martens)
Animuthrowawayplz7 points2y ago
Girl with wide feet too. They are really comfy after you break them in (they are leather so they stretch to your foot). The price is really high, but my last pair lasted me 9 years. My current pair I've had for two years, almost three, now and are doing fine.
JoWhitLux3 points2y ago
I wear Dansko clog (nurses wear them!) Durable and comfortable and with all the spills - I just wipe them off each night!
FfierceLaw2 points2y ago
Me too! My feet never hurt. The clogs sometimes feel like they propel me as I walk, in a good way
phoenixia2175 points2y ago
Docs are great but if you buy a pair, DONT break them in at work, you’ll cry.
elrobolobo5 points2y ago
This is true, and depending on the type you get, you'll need good socks.
crack-wolf16 points2y ago
take initiative, but don’t start picking up slack everywhere you see it or you’re going to be the asshole that has to fix everything. same goes with bar, everyone wants to get on bar when they first start. but if folks start to notice that you’re good at bar, that’s all you will ever end up doing and you will receive absolutely no help when you start to drown during a rush
cringeqween13 [OP]6 points2y ago
My little way of taking initiative is restocking our tea dispenser when I'm on CS. My SM gets so happy when she first saw me do it because no one else does it.
stqmine16 points2y ago
you get a discount with sketchers tho!!
No_Historian_88202 points2y ago
Wym?
stqmine5 points2y ago
At sketchers stores, you get a Starbucks discount. Had a few co workers tell me about how good the discount is.
NoFaceAllex16 points2y ago
I wish I knew how much stress I would gain (:
cringeqween13 [OP]12 points2y ago
I feel like half my stress would go away if my store wasn't falling apart at the seems it was the first in the district and hasn't had a remodel in years and there a leak at every turn. its also the size of a tarbucks with a drive thru
philosopher_cat_lady13 points2y ago
\-Due to understaffing and a company-wide obsession with drive-thru times, the only baristas allowed to work bar will be the ones who are good at it
\-You'll mostly be scheduled five-hour-and-forty-five-minute shifts so that you don't have time to eat a legitimate meal
\-Customers will treat you like garbage and there's really nothing you can do about it
\-The environment is very "we hate Starbucks," so if you liked Starbucks prior to working there or if you still do, you'll be the odd man out for doing so
\-You'll get one ten-minute break, if you're lucky, during which you've got to decide which is most important to you, 'cause there isn't time to do them all: use the restroom, drink water, sit down long enough that your legs stop hurting, eat a substantive piece of food. If you're off the floor for any longer than ten minutes, your shift supervisor will fuss at you
\-There's a stupid headset you have to wear which will make your life a living hell. If you take it off because you want quiet in your brain, you will get fussed at. You will have to listen to every thought that pops into the heads of your coworkers that they inexplicably find necessary to say to the entire team for five hours and forty-five minutes
\-Make sure your manager orders restroom air fresheners. No explanation necessary
smilygirrl126 points2y ago
Legally, you're allowed to use the restroom at any time. So technically you could use the restroom before or after your break and they can't legally do anything. I have multiple baristas that use the restroom multiple times during their shifts and often before or after breaks. There is nothing they can do about it because you're allowed to use the restroom.
philosopher_cat_lady2 points2y ago
You've gotta get permission first, which the shift supervisor isn't going to allow. If you want to push back by mentioning legality, the shift supervisor could simply take your ten away, as they're not guaranteed
smilygirrl123 points2y ago
As a shift supervisor, I couldn't fathom not letting someone use the restroom. There's been times when I ask if they wait a minute for someone to get back from their break though. Also, I wouldn't take away someone's ten. I'm pretty sure breaks are guaranteed as breaks are legally required to be given unless the person states they don't want to take it.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points2y ago
Well, what I mean is, from my personal experience, I would be concerned that a shift supervisor would feel like using the restroom before or after the ten-minute break period would be an unfair extension of the break period, not to mention a problem to the schedule. Ten-minute breaks are not a guarantee, as the thirty-minute break is if your shift is over six hours. At my store, we've had a couple of partners regularly taking long bathroom breaks. (I don't personally find this to be a problem. If you've gotta go, you've gotta go.) But my manager has found it to be a problem, as she has invented a rule that if you take a bathroom break longer than five minutes, you forfeit your ten.
amazing_redhead1 points2y ago
Our ASM say that they can take the times we use the restroom out of our 10. Idk how true that is
philosopher_cat_lady2 points2y ago
That's true because tens are not guaranteed. That's why I said you're lucky if you get one
smilygirrl122 points2y ago
I don't think that's true. I'd ask your DM and also partner resources. I highly doubt that can vary state by state. You're in the US, yes?
amazing_redhead1 points2y ago
Yes in the US
FfierceLaw3 points2y ago
I'm starting to think that the partners considered to be "good on bar" are really just "fast on bar." I may not be as fast but I think I'm better, I care about the correct build and care about shot quality
philosopher_cat_lady2 points2y ago
Precisely. That's really what I meant. I'm slower on bar as well, but I actually blow the steaming wand for two seconds to prevent cross-contamination and rinse my dishes well
ihmovement3 points2y ago
that all sounds terrible. Sympathizing with you. We’re sure you’re an amazing employee and you’re clearly a very hard worker. There’s no doubt that your customers appreciate you.
bbleinbach2 points2y ago
A lot of is is probably dependent on your managers. I’m sorry your Starbucks is so unpleasant but I don’t think those are universal truths.
philosopher_cat_lady2 points2y ago
Oh yeah, they're definitely not universal truths. I would imagine that they're quite common though, given the young age of the employees
sidneyistrash8 points2y ago
the morning shift one is so true 😅😅
misswallflowerr7 points2y ago
\-your manager may or may not disregard your availability until you confront them after the fact. \-definitely go over the steps to deescalate a situation fully!! (ive had many angry people come at ME for making their drink wrong when i was on REG! so to avoid the bar from being more backed up, i take the responsibility of the messed up order.... \-for CS, definitely knowing the exp. dates is a plus when refilling backups.
rosesandthorns177 points2y ago
omfg never getting on bar as a morning shift green bean is too painfully relatable
rudebii6 points2y ago
Definitely invest in comfortable leather boots for work. I've seen a sock literally melt onto the top of a person's foot when she left the spout on a Columbia brewer and the scalding water dripped over the counter onto her foot.
Even a thick canvas shoe (like Vans) will get you more protection than a sneaker.
sammieduck694206 points2y ago
expect to feel like a walking syarbucks drink after each shift. oh, and also it’ll look like you have a weird skin disease cuz syrups will splash onto your arm but there’s no time to wipe it off so it cakes on more and more and dries.
TJW3513 points2y ago
Got home from a closing shift last night with chocolate syrup on my elbows and frap roast dried up my arms lol
ahbeeceeess3 points2y ago
Frap roast spray tan
Aliciarox111893 points2y ago
For the shoe person -- sketchers and use your discount!!! They have great wide shoes
Cheesy_Wotsit3 points2y ago
Female with big wide feet here (UK size 9-10) ... men's shoes. Every time. Ugly-ish but a problem solver. I'm guessing small wide feet would be boys shoes dep on how small?
_circuts2 points2y ago
Your hands will lose their youthful glow and turn into crypt keeper hands from all the everything. Use lotion... But it'll get gross after like 2 minutes.
square_pulse2 points2y ago
Dude. It’s my 4th week and seeing my half burned dry ass hand made me sad. Time to get hand creams.
moon_light5232 points2y ago
I’m really glad that my manger gives me bar time whenever she’s shift, only downside is that there’s one shift that won’t ever put me on bar early in the morning :/
cringeqween13 [OP]3 points2y ago
My manager really wants to get us green beans on bar but we're always understaffed and too busy
ihmovement2 points2y ago
So sorry you have to deal with all this discomfort. We’re sure you’re great at your job and your customers greatly appreciate you.
lbatts142 points2y ago
I had a pair of Skechers works shoes and they were great! I also have small wide feet and they come in wide! I paid around $60 for mine and they are amazing!!
HollowRibcage2 points2y ago
When going cold turkey with coffee- (i have a very high caffeine tolerance, coffee does nothing anymore therefore it no longer helps with waking up) I can be clean for four days without coffee and have no headaches but the second I step in the cafe and smell espresso I get headaches caught up from those four days. - three grande iced coffees with a few espressos thrown in there and Advil gets rid of it.
XxTRUEPINOYxX1 points2y ago
Jk, I learn that why people stay and it’s not the company but it’s the people that surround you.
