Issue with stores marking me out for drinks I don’t need marked out. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kapnkels
Question about mark outs: sometimes after I get off work or on my days off, I visit Starbucks twice within the day (always 2 different stores since I commute a lot). I’ve been having issues with people simply marking me out for things once they scan my partner card on my phone. I’ll let them know I have my Starbucks card and partner numbers on there to scan, and they just start handing me the items I’m getting (food/drink). I of course use my numbers and discount for my first order always, but just getting a discount with busy stores seems to be an issue in drive.

Will I get in trouble for this, and should I email Starbucks or let them know ahead of time? Or should I just let it go and start letting them know at the speaker box that it will be a discount? It’s honestly minimized my visits to there because I don’t want people to just mark me out for things, and I don’t want to take the fall for letting them know ahead of time that my money was on the card, as well as my numbers for discount.

Tell them you’d like to use your partner discount rather than your daily partner mark out?

I’m not telling them to mark me out. The people in these situations are on window and DTO. They will be taking an order, reach out to scan my phone, and while I wait for them to finish the order (because I personally hate people yelling at me through the window while I’m taking an order), they are already marking me out to get me out of drive thru. It’s not like I’m just pulling up and expecting them to know I need a discount. But I also don’t expect to just be scanned and on my way with no communication either.

Yeah just say beforehand “this isn’t my mark out” “I’ve already used my mark out,” “please don’t use my mark out,” “I need to pay for this,” etc..,

Sadly the area I go to is a busy one, and they normally only have a single person on DTO and window. Because of this I let them know at the order box I’m using my discount, not my mark out. When I get up to the window, they are almost 9/10 times taking an order, scan me while talking to another customer (which is totally fine) but then mark me out. I’ve tried to tell them I would like to pay for it, but they are always like “ohhhhh it’s fine just have a free one today!”.

I am so confused at what you are saying the barista is doing at the window. Are they marking you out for the food and bev instead of the discount? Are they charging money on your partner card? Im not sure but either way before you pay the barista at the window or use a card or whatever just tell them exactly how you want to pay/utilize your partner card.

Sorry, I have ADHD and my thoughts don’t translate well in life or over text. The stores I go to in this particular city are normally very busy and crowded. They also normally only have a single person on DTO and they window. My issue is that I’m being marked out for drinks/food while they are busy taking an order from another customer (they scan my card while taking an order) so I like to wait until they are done to remind them again that I need my discount. But almost every time they mark me out or forget I told them at the speaker box. So basically, I come through drive, take my order, let them know I have numbers on my phone for a discount, I pull up to the window, they are already taking an order, reach out to scan my phone, and bam. They do the mark out instead of the discount. With my ADHD, I hate when people are trying to talk to me through window while I’m taking an order (it jumbles my brain a ton, making it extremely hard to get back on track or focus). So I like to give them a second to finish up — at the least. I just figure it’s a little respect to not interrupt. So anyway, that’s the deal. Hopefully that clarified a little more.

Yes as long as you make it clear each time you are fine even if they mess up. Its their mistake at that point although your method of waiting until they have your undivided attention helps.

I hooked my number to my mobile account to make things easier for days I’m working and not marking things out. I think a lot of stores put new people in the window and they just don’t know better. This keeps everyone in the clear.

Thank you, is our discount still applied on mobile orders? I will just start doing that instead if it works.

You’ll need to go into your profile from a webpage, not the app, and add it but yes- it will add your discount then.
