declaring tips (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by reclusivegiraffe
this is a rant but GOD i hate how we have to declare cash tips. yes i know the IRS is making them do it, i don’t blame starbucks, but i DO blame them for how annoying they’ve made the process. i hate having to type a billion different passwords and having to click a bunch of different links just to get to one place and type one number. i forget to even collect my tips most of the time because the declaring process is such a pain in the ass that i put it off.

Y'all claim your tips? Wild.

Does anyone know what happens if you don’t declare them? Or are we all just waiting till next tax season to find out? 😂

I mean, it's fully illegal not to declare tips but literally no one does it (even non-sbux employees who get cash tips). But if you ever get found out I think the IRS will either garnish your wages and/or make you have to pay back (more) taxes. Jail time *teecchhnically* might even be a possibility as well. But I know plenty of tip earners who haven't declared their cash tip for decades without any problems so 🤷‍♀️

Thanks! That’s helpful. I never got a straight answer from any of my partners.

I asked my manager how to declare when I first started because it was my first ever corporate job after working locally for 15 years so I figured it was something everyone did. She was confused what "declaring tips" even meant lmao

Giiiiiiiirrrrrrl nooooooooooo. No one actually does that lol

For the last 2 weeks tips have been less that $1 per hour. Sunday was one of the worst tip days. Kinda ironic when you live in the Bible belt and the after church crowd keep their 2 cents. Also to the people that want to pay-it-forward how bout tip your baristas or is it not really about paying it forward and just about getting extra stars or looking good in front of a few people?

Also like every other Tuesday (my store’s tip day) the SYSTEM IS DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE. it drives me crazy. why can’t I just declare tips from home? why do you do system maintenance during the day?

Let’s say for some crazy reason I hadn’t declared any tips yet because nobody told us how and we can’t figure it out, is there a way to declare past tips? And how exactly do you declare tips in the first place?

So normally, if you were going to declare your tips, you would have to do it on the back of house computer. Start by going to the Partner Hub, then My Partner Info, then clicking on the page that says “Declared cash tips” or something similar. For some reason, you can only make changes for the current pay period and one pay period prior (so you only have access to about 4 weeks at a time).

If you want to declare tips going back further than that, you’ll have to call the PCC and ask them to enter the amounts for you. I did that once and it only took a few minutes, it was pretty much painless. Although I’m pretty sure they take out income taxes from your next paycheck for any tips you declare during that pay period, so maybe keep that in mind if you’re thinking of declaring a large amount of tips at once.

Thanks so much!

Wait so am I not getting my tips if I’m not declaring them online?
Ristrettooo 6 points 2y ago
You still get your tips regardless, the IRS just requires you to report cash tips to your employer. You do have to claim your cash tips though, so if you’ve never got any, ask your SSV next time you work.

Declaring your tips to the IRS is mainly for servers/waitera who's majority of income from that job primarily comes from tips. Most servers literally only get paid like $4 an hour, because a majority of their income is tips. So if your a server or waiter definitely declare your tips. But if your a barista and you get paid an actual wage and tips are only a fraction of your income, then I wouldn't worry about declaring your tips.
