We don’t work in a coffee shop. We work in a daycare.(self.starbucksbaristas)

The nice customers are the ones that standout. The fact that so many people will throw a fit over their dragon drink not being purple because we ran out of the inclusions, over you not being able to hear them when they whisper to the drive-thru speaker, when the long line they get into takes a long time to get through because it’s a *long* line, over no cake pops (which are really just overpriced bites of cake), over no brown sugar, over literally the smallest things... it’s. It crushes my hope for humanity a little more everyday. We work at a daycare.

I remember we once had a power outage and had to close our location in a busy office complex.
We took the full carafes out front and offered cups of coffee for free because they were going to be thrown out anyway.
Some middle aged dude threw a tantrum because we couldn’t make him a free Mocha...
Yay daycare!
golden_pinky31 points2y ago
It's situations like this where I wish you could just say the truth! I wish you were allowed to look at this man and say "the machines that we use to make mocha require electricity, which we don't have access to right now. Does it really make sense for you to be upset about this? The free coffee is BECAUSE we can't make things like a mocha right now. Technically, they could send me home but we decided to stay here and make people happy. So if that's not you, all good."
real-3st12 points2y ago
"We understand your frustrations but our team thought it might make everyone happier to have a free cup of coffee that would otherwise get wasted with the power outage. We're sorry we couldn't cater to your request due to the outage but we hope to see you another time?" -hand them a cup of coffee-
this is all done in front of everyone very loudly and clearly remember
longhair-care2much1 points2y ago
This is great lol perfect handling of that situation
wolv3swithin9 points2y ago
I mean you can say that...
longhair-care2much1 points2y ago
I honestly would accept this as a manager. But I also have a small tolerance to bullshit. I’m nice to all, but there’s a way to respectfully put people in place.
Final_Pool85 points2y ago
Yea. That’s one of the biggest reasons I left the siren for an actual coffee shop. I felt like I was babysitting the customers all the time
aGrapeInUtero [OP]38 points2y ago
Ya know, I used to work at an actual coffee shop. I loved the craft. But, unfortunately, the place is owned by THE worst man I’ve ever met. Horrible experience. At my store, my boss is literally amazing. I feel very supported and I do have a lot of fun at work. Still, like I said. We work in a day care. I’m glad you get to experience actual barista work now and less assholes! Haha
espresso_messo14 points2y ago
I have always worked at real coffee shops. I came to Starbucks as a college student for the pay, but I'm halfway through my 2 weeks because I 1) was always put on DTO and 2) never got a chance to make drinks as well as I'd like because when I am on bar, it's because our line is leaking out onto the main road. (No, I never got a hang of sequencing.) Thankfully, I have another coffee shop lined up for me. Starbucks gave me hope with the coffee academy when I first started working here, but I see now that that's kind of a sham. Regardless of how much you learn, you will still be making venti iced white mochas with vanilla sweet cream cold foam and extra caramel drizzle the whole day. We sell overpriced cups of sugar to overgrown children in a daycare.

Today I had a big man baby flip out at me and my coworkers because our bathrooms are not open for customers. He literally threw a tantrum.
throwaway345667838 points2y ago
When I first started back in August we had a man argue with us that “Bathrooms should be open because Covid and science aren’t real”
iStealSharpies27 points2y ago
I would have retorted “your brain isn’t real sir”
throwaway345667815 points2y ago
Swear, I wanted to tell him “You’re ducking dumb” but it was my second day 😭 My SM did imply he was dumb, but not outright say it
Honey_girl_20 points2y ago
A woman in a nearby location literally took a dump in their hallway. They had to close shop for a crew to come in & sanitize.
OnehappySmile28 points2y ago
Coffee helps with peristaltic movement of the colon. Sometimes coffee also appears to.make their brain shut off.

fucking Christ 😤
LatterRooster8 points2y ago
I wish ours were closed
Psychedelic_Doughnut3 points2y ago
Sounds like he was pretty pissed

Former partner here
I had a customer in his 50s who came into my store with an empty cold cup with a sticker on it. Note, this sticker was not from our store. Ours had rounded corners.
He asks me for a hot coffee and if I could remake the drink that was on the cup, because "they didn't make it right yesterday and my wife didn't like it." Of course I can do that, so I ring in what's on the sticker and tell him the total. He hits me with a "Wait, you're charging me for the latte?"
Dude.
I proceed to explain to him that I couldn't give it to him for free because A: the cup was empty, meaning that your wife seemed to enjoy all 26 ounces, B: you got your drink from at least 8 miles away, and C: you got it fucking yesterday
Of course, in classic customer fashion, he starts to lose his mind like I insulted his family. Things along the lines of "Starbucks is fucking stupid" and "that's bullshit" were said. Fortunately he left without any further trouble, but come on. I've seen actual children handle getting the wrong cake pop better than that.
moon_light5236 points2y ago
I had a customer once throw a fit because the $4 recovery card didn’t cover his latte made with a milk alternative and a syrup. Normally I would have just discounted it, but because of how rude he was i didn’t lol

We had a green bean on DTR. Guy and his gf pull up. He tries to pay for one drink with $100 (we're not a bank). Partner on DTR asks if we can break it, shift says "Yes, but please ask them to use a smaller bill next time for one drink." Partner on DTR does just that and the guy threw a temper tantrum and angrily asked why our store doesn't have money.
1. We literally *just* gave you your change
2. You have the change and your drink, you're seriously arguing that we asked you not to use $100 for $5 worth of drink?
3. Its not about having money its about having enough money for the keyholder and business to not be interrupted by individual transactions.
givemeapples30 points2y ago
One time I had a customer try to give me a $100. Only having $5s and $1s in my till, I told him I couldn't accept it, I dont have change for that. His response? "What do you mean you don't have change?! You're a coffee shop!" like.... EXACTLY. We are a coffee shop, not your bank! 🤦♀️
VrginMobile2 points2y ago
I had a customer do a similar thing. He was like you guys make millions of dollars a day how do you not have change when everything is expensive? I just kindly told him i have change when i have it and no access to large bills at the moment.
real-3st3 points2y ago
Best ways to avoid the altercation from these is to just say "I just broke a hundred for someone recently so im all out of smaller bills sorry" because it forces them into a situation where they have to go with smaller bills and realize that this is what they do to others for trying to break huge bills. Also remember! You do not have to accept money you cannot tender!!!

Today I was working the window and this older woman with a 3 pack a day voice pulls up and asks for a "chocolate coffee, one of the frosted ones". Ok, a mocha frappuccino, cool. I ask her what size she wants and she says she wants a large, simple enough. She pulls up to the window and gives me the money and I hand her drink.
Her "is there coffee in this?"
"Yes ma'am "
"And chocolate?"
"Yes ma'am "
She stirs it around a bit, takes a sip then asks me if I'm sure there's chocolate in it, because it doesn't taste like it, I ask her if she wants me to have it remade, she says yes so I do. She then TELLS me to take the drink back because she doesn't want it and I tell her I can't. She then tells me that the guy at the bar and I "must be fucking r*****d" and that this company needs to "train their employees better". She then decides that she doesn't want to wait for the remake any longer and drives off right as my bar person is putting the lid on her remake
aGrapeInUtero [OP]16 points2y ago
Yeah. You’re the idiot for giving her what she asked for and following your company guidelines.
SkarekrowXIII6 points2y ago
One of the things that pissed me off the most is that she got so pissed, and then left literal seconds before the guy handed it to me
_kyree_12 points2y ago
My first thought at this point would be 'please go get tested for COVID if you can't taste *that*'
SkarekrowXIII5 points2y ago
Oh crap... yeah, that's a good point... I'm gonna be kinda mad if I catch it because of her. Of course my entire store would have to shut down because my manager doesn't do block scheduling
Ashesremindme6 points2y ago
It drives me nuts when people don't know what they are ordering, and then they get mad when what they get isn't what they imagined in their mind.
The other day this mom and teenage daughter came through drive thru, and the daughter wanted the BOSE. We've been out of BS for a while, so we suggested different syrup, and she picked a couple. Then instead of oatmilk, she wanted almond milk. LIGHT almond milk. Ok then. So they get to the window and I hold it out, and the mom is like, "oh, no, this is NOT going to work for us." Because of the light almond milk, there's about an inch or so of space at the top. I explained that the drink is literally 3 shots of espresso, syrup, ice, and the milk. I clarified that she'd really asked for light milk and that we didn't mishear, and she did. So...what did she expect? What did she think was going to be in the space left by putting in less milk? I asked that (in a nice way, trying to be helpful) and the daughter said she thought there'd be more milk. But...you asked for light?? I offered to add more but they were in a hurry and just begrudgingly took it, but I'm still here thinking about it days later. I still have no idea what they were thinking when they ordered light milk and expected it to be full up.
It does bother me that on the signage for the SE drinks it shows them brimming over the top of the cup, though. If the standard is to fill to 1/4" below the rim, that's how it should look on the picture. I can understand why customers feel like we're being skimpy on the drinks if the pictures make it look like it should be filled to the brim. It doesn't explain why the lady in my story was pissy, but for other customers who get it regular and then ask why the cup isn't full.
SkarekrowXIII3 points2y ago
That really sucks. I don't get why if a customer doesn't like something they see, they feel the need to pull the "no no no, nu huh, thay is NOT my drink". That's one of the things that makes it much harder for me to want to do I good job with their drink
VrginMobile2 points2y ago
I had a woman arguing about how her drink was made wrong because it didn't look like the picture and we explained how it takes a bit of time for the foam to melt a bit and look like the pic. We remade her drink happily for the moment of course and then the original one looked like the picture now and she was like oh it looks perfect and took the original drink.
real-3st1 points2y ago
Oh that's actually harassment /verbual abuse and can be filed as an incident report and any more iterations of it can have her he permanently banned :)
SkarekrowXIII2 points2y ago
Luckily that was the first ((and hopefully last)) time she's come to my store. I'm just glad it was me who got her, I'm a 30yo guy and work with a bunch of people who are either just out of high school, or about to leave high school and some if these kids are way too sweet so I'm not sure how they would have taken it
aGrapeInUtero [OP]13 points2y ago
A lady today wanted to speak with our district manager about me not being able to hear her over the speaker and us not having avocado spread.
real-3st1 points2y ago
You should've gotten them on the phone. It really helps when they see what all goes down at the stores
easymachtdas11 points2y ago
You are witnessing the worst of society. There I'd hope. We can do this! Kudos to you for putting up with it, I also have a lengthy career in the service industry and thank god I dont have to work a drive through or cash register. People are teeeeeeeeeeeerrible, it's always everyone else's fault they are having a bad day.
You're awesome.
D735487 points2y ago
My coworker had to deal with a customer who had told her that he has "a free drink". So my coworker used his stars. He asked if she used them and she said yes and then said "no i didnt want to use my stars. I have a free drink" so we had to void the completed order to give him his stars back and it took 10 minutes to figure out what he means by "free drink" and he starts yelling "ITS A FREE DRINK BUT I DONT WANNA USE MY STARS" and we didnt understand what he meant cus the only thing on his account were stars. Turns out he got an email from starbucks with a barcode to scan(hes been scanning his account the entire time) to get his free drink. My coworker put a berry in his java chip frap out of spite.
real-3st4 points2y ago
Hilarious, but please do not modify drinks that way. Decaf them any time from this but no new add ons, you dont wanna deal with a lawsuit if they happened to be allergic
MoshiMachine2 points2y ago
And that is some of the reasons why as a green bean, I said no to Starbucks after three weeks of being slave driven, schedules changes everyday, short staffed Spring Break in a vacation town and TikTok drinks by the dozens.
aGrapeInUtero [OP]2 points2y ago
Dang, I get that for sure. I’m really lucky to be at a store with bosses that show me they care about me. Empathy is super hard to come by in the work force. If I know I need to say no, I do, and they support me.
MoshiMachine1 points2y ago
That’s all it would’ve taken for me to want to stick around and help. I loved the job but not the bosses’ work ethic or working conditions. Good luck to you!!
reinadelastrigoi2 points2y ago
Oof. Yeah, I used to work with kids, and this is super similar. I just don’t get paid to change any diapers.
aGrapeInUtero [OP]2 points2y ago
Sometimes it’s like changing diapers in the bathrooms. I wonder how people get poop in as many places in a bathroom as they do.
reinadelastrigoi2 points2y ago
Oh, I know. Wtf guys?
Alternative_Blacks2 points2y ago
What blows my mind the most is how adults teach their children how to act and treat others. Meanwhile, they’re going to coffee shops acting like children because there’s a shortage in their favorite milk.
Illustrious-Ad3182-55 points2y ago
I’m always nice try to tip plenty of prettt girls work at Starbucks so I try to come back;)
_dreamsofthedead_19 points2y ago
Bro that's creepy tbh
Kaylushhh18 points2y ago
Ummm ... don’t go back. That a really weird reason to revisit a business. And remember those “pretty girls”(which I’m sure they are lovely humans) are working and not there for your enjoyment.
espresso_messo4 points2y ago
also, at least at our store, about a quarter of our employees are minors. usually put on drive thru
FelicityCecilia13 points2y ago
Ew
t3llm3m0re9 points2y ago
I can guarantee you they don’t find you attractive for this disgusting behaviour.
PalominoCreste4 points2y ago
They all make fun of you for being a weirdo. Guaranteed.
