Sometimes I feel like we don’t have a manager (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Siren_Song252
I’m a barista. I’ve been at my store for almost three years. My current manager barely works on the floor and spends most of his time “on the clock” off the floor looking at his laptop. He spends about 5ish hours a week on the floor with us. It feels like the shifts run the store and get zero support from him. He never opens, closes or runs a shift. Anyone else have the same issues with their manager?

Yep. When she is on the floor (rare) she does random stuff like stock tea bags and oatmeal materials (while the rest of us are trying to get stuff done for closing). It’s the most annoying thing for all of us shifts and we’re all about to quit. Wild. Sorry it’s that way at your store too :/

That’s what our manager is like, though I don’t know that he’s ever done 5 hours since I’ve been there, but I think that’s the job. Lives a lot better when I don’t have to place the order😁

Same. My outside hire manager just slowed shit down when she worked tbh lol

My inside hire manager (moved up from barista to manger) was good. I mean she had like 10 yrs of technical experience so she was on the floor a decent amount.

My manager is an inside hire and it really shows honestly. She’s constantly on the floor especially during peak. The only times she doesn’t spend at least part of her day on the floor is if it’s Monday and she’s doing admin stuff and/or in meetings all day. We also just don’t have enough shifts for her to be back there for very long anyway lol

EXactly! My manager, an inside hire, was on the floor way more helping us out. Same with Mondays since thats the day for schedules and district meetings. Also took feedback more readily and constantly asked for it. Also was so on top of doing trainings as fully as possible and 1 on 1 meetings. FR a god send. She was the ONLY good manager I had in my time at starbucks working between 5-10 different stores.

I admire her so much. Her partner numbers are like 11\*\*\*\* and she used to be a meth addict, kicked it and now works her ass off. She was my only manager flexible about switching shifts and getting shifts covered. Tried to accomodate all the needs of ppl working and didn't just hire everyone; hired people who'd really be valuable assets. I miss her very much :(

Ours tried to show me how to do warming faster, except he wasn’t faster, just more frenetic,

Bruh same. My outside hire manager did that same shit. Always tried to tell me how to manage between register and warming but she did an ass job LOL. They don't work enough on the floor to actually know

If you rarely see your manager and are working mornings its time to talk to your dm.

Former SM here. Unless they are doing some type of project/ developmental activities that takes them out of the store, you should be seeing your SM on the floor way more than this. Don't know how much "admin" time SM's are being given these days , but when I did the job we generally had 1 or at best 2 of our work days that we were able to devote to "off the floor" tasks such as scheduling. hiring etc etc. All other days were usually spent running a shift or part of floor coverage. I would reach out to your DM or PR if they are unresponsive about this.

Yep, that’s pretty standard for my store. I only saw my old manager about twice a year. Once for PSCs and maybe a time or two when something happened and she couldn’t go home early. The new manager is a little better, but it’s honestly a blessing to never have the manager on the floor. Then I can do my job the right way instead of the Starbucks way.

that’s how my old sm was. i work nights and never got to see her, and she’d never be on the floor in the morning. we got a new sm a month or so ago and it is day and night. she has come in on off days because we were so short staffed.

Same

my sm never even shows up anymore. if she’s scheduled for a certain time she’s late or just doesn’t come. she’s been working at a different store and completely abandoned ours. when she does work it is never on the floor

I work at a Target and our manager "runs" the food service department which includes Starbucks and General Merchandise Consumables. She spends no time in Starbucks, has absolutely no knowledge of how it actually runs, but complains if we have a low customer connection score or anything else mundane. Since I've been here, there have been 3 people to try to run Starbucks. None of them actually wanted the responsibility. Barista quit left and right and they keep threatening to take hours from us if we don't open our availability to work more hours. I'm close to quiting my damn self. It's bad here, no one wants to take full responsibility for Starbucks but the few baristas that remain, but alas, they won't let us govern ourselves. Shit sucks and contributes to low moral and a general sense of "fuck it" that we tend to have now. They don't care, and we really feel like we shouldn't either anymore.

I’ve had it both ways and they’re both not great haha at my previous store, the SM would just sit in the lobby on her laptop. I think I saw her on the floor like twice in almost a year there. My current store, the SM is ALWAYS on the floor except for a few hours here and there during the week and he ONLY does register which is great until you’re down a person and have been solo baring for your entire shift during peak and want to cry in the back room cause he won’t switch and give you a break. I would take him as my manager any day though in all honesty
