what does 1st non-training shift look like?(self.starbucksbaristas)

hi!! i’m finishing up my last day of scheduled training tomorrow, and my shifts for next week are called coverage instead. does this mean that i’ll just be thrown in to work my own shift, or is it more of a shadowing experience? our store manager has been training me and she’s super nice and good at it, so i feel like i’m getting a good foundation, but i’m just worried about being on my own and in the way lol. i believe there’s only dto, register, and mobile left to cover in my training plan and it will have been 20.5 hours by the end of tomorrow. thank you guys!

It varies by store, but you'll likely be put primarily on register as it's the easiest position for new hires to learn fast and be able to do solo without any major issues. This will help reinforce the beverage recipes in your mind as all the ingredients and ratios for every drink you ring up are listed on the register and it will also give you good exposure for the kind of modifications customers like to ask for. During slow periods your trainer will probably pull you off reg to practice drinks and walk you through CS duties. After a few days or weeks there will be less hand holding until they see you have a decent grasp of things and just give you duty assignments from then on. But be aware it will be a while before you get decent bar time, I'm talking months, as that is the key position that makes or breaks the day for everybody. So expect to do A LOT of reg and warming for a while, but ask for bar practice often!

good to hear i’ll be able to get more bar practice before actually being planted there 😅register definitely sounds like a good place to learn a lot of the drinks and i’m looking forward to actually feeling useful for customers haha

training moves fast, and yes you will be more or less thrown into it. but don’t worry, you will never be alone! i started out mostly on window and dto so your drive buddy will be there to help you out, plus shifts and other baristas. you can ask anything and you’ll get the hang of things, but it is mostly a learning on the job experience

cool, thank you!! i definitely think it’ll get easier day by day as i actually get to learn on the job, just nervous for that initial “well wtf now” stage haha

I just finished my training not too long ago as well. I was put on drive-through and register for a while then I started cold bar a few days ago. It may be different depending on the store but I doubt they will throw you into bar right away. Learning register and drive-through is tricky at first but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze.

You’ll likely be put on drive thru window or register, and if it’s slow they might put you on warming, customer support, or potentially bar for a little bit (depending on the shift supervisor!
