got an interview for shift supervisor tomorrow, what to expect? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thanosh8r
hey everyone,

so i got a call yesterday from the manager at a local Starbucks and pretty much called and said if i can stop by for an interview tomorrow morning for the shift supervisor position. i told her id be there, I do have some supervisor experience at a past job and some key holder experience at another job so i kinda know what the responsibilities would be like.

i have attended a starbucks interview last week which i actually got the job for, but the position was actually for a barista and not a shift supervisor. I am more interested in being a shift supervisor because then id be able to advance from there.

so does anyone have any interview experience as a shift supervisor at starbucks recently or has in the past? I'm almost certain the manager is going to ask me STAR based questions which im fine with but anything else that might catch me by surprise? like what do they look for? the interview I went to last week was pretty straight forward: tell me about yourself? whats your availability? why you want to work for starbucks? are you comfortable making drinks and working in a customer facing environment? stuff like that.

anything helps!!!!!!!!! thank youuuuuuuuuu

i get why you’d want to be a shift first, but i’ve personally never met a shift who wasn’t a barista first. maybe there are some, but i feel like it would be 10x more stressful not only for you but the baristas. you’ll need barista & shift training bc you don’t know anything about our drinks, food, support, etc. also: some days you won’t be scheduled as the shift in charge, you’re scheduled as a barista doing barista tasks. idk i’ve never met anyone hired as a shift & i’ve been here for over 2 years... good luck tho fr 😭🤍

Oh fr???? I mean I wouldn’t mind starting out as barista and as long as I work up to shift supervisor lol but thanks for letting me know

i’m not saying you can’t, but i personally feel like the transition would be so much smoother. it really does help to build on the barista role and go up from there only because there’s so much to learn about starbucks & how it works. (for reference i’m a barista trainer & it takes an average barista like a month to feel completely comfortable doing everything you learned in training) up to you though, i’m sure it’ll be fine

also, the store i currently work at (where im a shift) normally has quite a few external hires and they dont have a good history lol. they either dont last long at all or struggle a lot and get super stressed. now, you might be amazing and a quick learner, but thats just from my experience

I’m an outsider SSV, shit was “fun” learning 3 things at once. I had prior food service knowledge so it’s not like I’m a total noob. I caught on fast,

i get stressed training new baristas bc of how much they have to learn so i cant imagine what you went through. how’s it been so far though??

I mean I ain’t dead yet, and honestly if I was ever trained by you I tell you relax and breath. Everyone is different on learning some may catch on some may not. I love challenges and honestly no one is perfect but if my trainer can provide me info I’ll be fine. And truthfully it’s not bad I went to a DT after 3 months as my cafe closed down. I love a fast pace environment as that’s what I was use to, it wasn’t as bad I had worse at my last job.

i was told by my DM that starbucks tries to hire 30% outside hires and 70% inside promotions. this keeps a lot of shifts/managers with barista skills and experience, as well as some with outside perspectives and who have good problem solving or managing experience!

interesting, i’ve worked at almost all the stores in my district, multiple outside of my district, and have never met a shift who wasn’t a barista. like i said before: i’m sure there are some, i just feel like it would be stressful training time

i find that larger stores often have outside hires! my store has over 30 partners and we are just now hiring an outside shift supervisor.

that’s really cool :) also 30 wow that’s huge

As an outside SSV who was hired end of Q4 2020, the way I got it was talking how I problem solved/dealing with difficult people, talked about my strengths but also my flaws and how I am as a worker, I also said I love to be challenge as a bad day helps me prepare for the worst. But most importantly how much confident i was during my interview

Now more than ever, with the new higher pay rate, stores are definitely hiring more external supervisors. Be ready to speak to goals set with prior teams that you lead, and how you coached your team to success., and communicated through out the process with your leaders. Also how you coach performance in the moment, show appreciation for the team regularly, and how you made genuine connections with your team to support them, and special connection with customers in your previous positions. I guarantee they’ll love that. Good luck!

Thank you!! I just got out and I got the job! She said they normally don’t hire external shift supervisors but it happens!
erbinford 1 points 2y ago
Congratulations! I think the leaders really are trying to make a change for the better knowing how difficult it is. In case you happen to see my other post, I am a store manager who’s in the process of stepping down to supervisor. I’ve put in a lot of years, and I want my time and quality of life back. Good luck, and don’t ever hesitate to ask questions or look for support in your store, and outside of your store in your district, and in all the networks available for information and venting!😆🤍
