Yesterday I had my first make me a drink that reminds you of... (self.starbucksbaristas)

My no nonsense slightly agressive coworker was the one on dto, I was on bar. This lady drives up dressed like Elsa. She asks my coworker "are you a fan of Disney?" My coworker replies "nah, not really" and the lady was like "ohh... really??" Like genuinely surprised haha and then she asked her to make a drink that reminded her of Frozen and Elsa. My coworker says "is that a tiktok drink? If you have a recipe I can make it for you" the lady was like "oh you can't make one up?" And we looked at each other I threw out vanilla frappe so we were like ok what can we add to that?? She came up with blueberries. It wasn't blue but it looked good and the lady was very pleased.

Reading stories like this one makes me so glad when I worked at Starbucks it was 2009 and this whole TikTok “Baristas will make whatever you want” thing wasn’t a thing yet.
I mean technically it did exist as a policy, but the only people who knew about the full extent of it were former employees. Not people in Elsa costumes asking for Elsa drinks without a recipe. 💀

I straight up just tell these people I don’t feel comfortable making them a surprise me drink in case they don’t like it/have allergens, but if they give me a drink they like I’m happy to make it for them.

Oh I fucking walk them through the process every time. Like no you are picking a drink. "Surprise me!" "Oh okay! Do you want hot or cold? What size? Something with coffee? Do you like X flavour? Okay that's gonna be an ______"

Yeah I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, way to put some one trying to do there job on the spot not to mention hold up the line but on the other hand I like fun and creativity. I think it has a 50/50 chance every time to either cause stress and anxiety or give the baristas a chuckle as they come up with something ridiculous. I've read in some other post some baristas say ok and just give them an iced chai every time lol

I just have had way too many “surprise me” customers come back saying they didn’t like it, can i make them something else, etc etc. so i won’t do it anymore myself. I like fun and creativity, but come up with it yourself bc i don’t know what you like, basically.
