Green Bean here seeking advice. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by KingBee204
Hey! I'm very new to being a barista, I started maybe 4 weeks ago? It's hard to keep track. Anyway, what's something you wish you knew before starting? Just seeking advice, it can be general or specific.

Don't take it too seriously, it's just coffee. Strive to do your job well, but don't stress out when you mess up. It'll happen a lot, even as you get better, it's not as big a deal as people make it seem.

Thanks, I’ve messed up a couple times and it really bothers me but I’m sure it’ll get better.

20 year veteran (110) here. The best piece of advice that I’ve ever gotten is this: “focus on the drink in front of you”.
KingBee204 [OP] 6 points 2y ago
Yeah, I get overwhelmed at a big line of drinks so I’ll try and do that

And you can apply it to whatever task you’re working on. The Bux gets overwhelming. Especially with some middle aged white lady staring you down, wondering why HER drink hasn’t taken precedent over the 8 in front of it. Just know it gets easier the more you do it.

you’ll catch on! i felt dizzied by the amount of information i was given at first and was overwhelmed but now, 4 months out, i feel like i’ve got a solid grip on most things and can hold my own most of the time.

other misc things:
- get a good, lightweight hand lotion
- good shoes are essential (my recommendation: $1
- buy a fuckton of sharpies

Getting some good supportive shoes

Thanks! I've been shopping around a bit. Any recommendations?

Docs are the best hands down, I recommend the 2976 Chelsea boots! The lace up ones can be a little harder to break in.

Doc Martens! They are supportive, non-slip, and look cooler than any other suitable footwear you’ll find out there.
