is working here worth it? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ResponsibleToe123
i have a job right now, but honestly, we are super overworked (as is every job in the fast food industry right now). i applied to a starbucks near me yesterday, and i think i’m going to be called for an interview because i’ve heard that starbucks needs more employees. i’m very lucky (and live in california) so i make 14.25 an hour. i also work my butt off every shift at my current job. i’m underage, so technically i am only supposed to be there until ten pm, and i can’t legally work more than four hours on a weekday, but i have to stay almost until midnight, and i am consistently working 7-8 hour shifts, so it’s time for a change. if i even get called in for an interview (and i’ve tried looking this up but can’t seem to find it!) what’s the starting pay? is it worth trying to negotiate? i want to make sure that my effort is equally shown in my paycheck. thanks in advance!

any hard work you do will always be overlooked, they don’t care about that. they care about customer connections. that’s it. idk about pay, but as a minor and as someone who says they’re a hard worker, no amount of pay will ever compensate you for what’ll happen i’d you get that job.

Spent almost a year there, busted my ass, knew my customers and how to fix problems. My manager kept feeding me false hope for a promotion, kept dealing with a lot of harassment from fellow partners that my manager was aware of and my SM was supposedly working on. It’s busy and demanding work, some of the customers are so ultra specific with their drinks that if you’re out of the certain product that is required for it then they’ll automatically blame you, but on another hand some customers are literally a breath of fresh air that made me love the job. It’s either going to be a good or bad experience tbh.

I feel like it honestly depends on who else working there and the manager. I feel like I definitely lucked out and got great coworkers and an amazing manager. They make it not as bad and i know if i need anything i can ask any of them. Its hard work yes, but i feel like thats expected. I personally don’t feel overworked. You’ll get amazing customers and terrible ones but thats how it is whenever your in customer service. For me the pay is fine (i do get jealous cause my bf makes 18 an hour at walmart and i make 14.50) I would maybe go in and ask the people at the store you applied to how they like it, and tell them to really be honest. I think what they say and how they say it will give some good insight into what the climate in that store is like. If it seems to be positive then try it out maybe. Good luck with everything

Depends entirely on management/staff.

And how much you're going to use the casual benefits. Free coffee, Spotify premium, Sketchers discounts, gym membership, Headspace app... all good. Love that stuff.

I really like the idea of going in as a customer and chatting with the partners at that particular location. Ask about tips and other high school students who work there, see what they say.

It's always worth it to ask about the pay at the interview. When I was hired in September (west coast) the DM was great and ok-ed a higher rate for me because of my previous pay and experience. When I transferred in January (east coast) that was all stripped, allegedly because the new DM has a "no exceptions" policy (COVID rates are much higher here and I think it's crippled their sales - all the stores in the area are broke, lol) and "if we pay individuals less, then we can afford to hire more partners overall."

That said, if you've got a good team, if your management respects your availability and trusts you when you're sick, then you'll probably have a good time. Busting ass to keep the floor stocked and clean, support your partners, and keep the good regulars happy can feel really great. Just put your health and safety first and be willing to say no when you need to. (Remember, kids, they can't force you to do anything you don't feel comfortable doing. Good management will tell you this often and not hold it against you when you say no.)

But if your management has a "because I said so" or a "we're going to try this new thing today" approach that's it's clearly going to make customers hostile or cause more chaos on the floor... if they're bullies, manipulative, or cliquey... well, it kills the vibes and makes the hard work feel pointless.

Good luck!

Sounds like your current job is very similar to working at Starbucks

You should always negotiate pay, they might tell you "the rate is set by corporate" but exceptions can always be made, though it's rare.

this is true applying anywhere, ESPECIALLY right now.

as a minor living in LA who works at a starbucks, i highly recommend it. shifts and supervisors are all rly understanding of high schoolers schedules and hours. and the perks r rly nice (free drinks and food yuppp!)
