How do I go about asking for a ✨raise✨(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Almond-espresso-shot
I’m not sure if this is the subreddit to ask this or not but hey. Here we go. After that raise in December I’m at $12.70, I’m in FL btw. Before that I was making $11 as a ssv. I was honestly for a while content with my raise it was great. But now that we (my whole district not just my store) are severely understaffed (and they are going to open 3 new stores soon. They are being built rn) it’s getting harder and harder for me to feel like that raise is worth it. At this point I’m running my plays with 1-2 baristas on the regular due to call outs, from baristas and shifts alike. And I’m doin the work of 2 ppl or more regularly. My sm is working literally everyday. But we have like 3 ssvs left. This may be a bad time. But I just feel if I’m going to be going above and beyond everyday. I should be making more right? My dm is great as well. But with the lack of ppl. No one can do much. We are hiring but ppl leave as fast as they come. It’s hard with so many newbies. And this question has now turned into a rant. I guess I’m just scared to ask for it and feel denied. I don’t even know how to begin asking.

Starbucks does not grant raise requests. You get your yearly raise and that’s it.
I fucking wish we could demand to make more but they would probably just fire us immediately and pay some kids $9

Well actually 2 ssvs at 2 other stores DID get granted raise requests. They told me about it, and that I should ask for 1 too. Which is how I got the idea in my head to begin with. I guess u should have mentioned that. So whoever told u that Starbucks doesn’t do that. Lied

Starbucks no longer does merit raises (which is the "I'm doing so much work / I'm so great; you should pay me more" type of raise) because it encourages intentional or unintentional bias and gender/race pay gaps. In order to avoid paying men more or minorities less, Starbucks standardizes the compensation based on your tenure, position, and area.

Wow, that is sexist/racist in itself to assume that merit pay will favor a particular race/gender
OneRoseDark6 points2y ago
D- wha- it *does*
There's *research* on this!

Holy crap. I think that management needs to be trained to recognize effort/excellence in partners of all races and genders to overcome this bias
OneRoseDark7 points2y ago
....oooooor we could decide that all people deserve the same pay for the same role, and go ahead and not leave it up to managers who may not give a flying fig about playing favorites. Y'know. Like we're doing.

And who determines "excellence?" Pretty sure there are corporate standards for this one already.
Make expectations for each position clear from the beginning - no blurry boundaries about which tasks you're going to be expected to do. Accept that not everyone is going to be an "ace" in every role and they still deserve to be compensated for their work and loyalty. Rotate partners fairly and coach to encourage growth/skills in all partners.
Promote people who want to be promoted and take on more duties/responsibility. They are being paid more to do more work, not rewarded for previous unpaid hard work, aka "paying their dues," which is an inherently abusive practice.

I’m not an SSV but an experienced barista of 2.5 years, I asked for a raise bc the people just starting now are making the same as me. They said no.
Almond-espresso-shot [OP]4 points2y ago
You didn’t get that percentage raise? Ppl who just started should not be making more than you. Anyone with the company 2 years or more should have gotten 11% increase in December
BeardiesRule1120 points2y ago
I didn’t make the 3 year cut off for a significant raise. They make 4 or5 cents less than me.
Almond-espresso-shot [OP]1 points2y ago
Barista/ssv level is the 11%

I found out I was making almost as much as a brand new shift when I’ve been with the company YEARS and my new SM at the time fought with my DM to get me an extra 50 cents, it wasn’t much but it’s something. With that said you need an SM that will fight for you and a DM that isn’t a complete asshole but it’s not impossible. I was doing a lot more of what was required of me and basically held the store together thru multiple SM transitions , so I had things to back up my asking. Good luck!
