Tall-ish rant? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Meeko419
We have a new partner at our store. He’s very eager to learn, which is always a good thing. He’s been here for about a two weeks and a half now and he’s got cold bar down pretty well minus the frappuccinos. During peak hours we have him at the register or as support, so we can get customers in and out of the store ASAP. I understand that he needs to improve on hot bar but there are times when he can learn. Like the other day he was on register, I had a venti hot caramel macchiato on one of the espresso machines and a shaken espresso on the other. I was working on the shaken espresso and he leaves the register and the line so he can finish the caramel macchiato. That time, I gave it a pass genuinely thinking he was trying to help.

I’ve been helping him on hot bar these past couple shifts and he’s been taking over for me. Like if I start a drink, he will be like “I will finish it off for you.” It’s been going on so much, like we have two machines. When a sticker comes, pull it and work on the drink?! There’s no need to takeover what I’m working on! It bothers me so much. I don’t want to say anything to him because he’s new but idk what to say because I don’t want him to step on me like that.

I also forgot to add, when im at hand off, I will ask customers their names and right when I’m about to hand them their drink, he will swoop in out of nowhere and hand it off to them.

Any advice?

“I don’t want to say anything to him because he is new”. Do you see the issue with your statement. He needs to know what he is doing is not the way we operate.

I’m new and I would much rather somebody tell me if I’m overstepping. It’s also good to remind him that those other tasks are really important and nothing else would be able to run without them

I’ve been there I just say I don’t need help and take the cup or ticket out of their hand. If I’m on bar I’m on bar not them. Also be respectful but assertive just let them know to chill out a bit.

Being overeager is definitely a common trait amongst new employees everywhere, just say gently but firmly that, unless you ask for help, it is the barista on bar’s responsibility to finish and hand off their own drinks and it is actually more confusing because he’s getting you out of routine. Suggest if he wants to have more to do he could stock or connect with the person at register if there isn’t someone behind him. The intent is probably to prove he can do it well, but the execution is coming off rude- once he knows, then it is something you could escalate if he doesn’t act on your advice and direction. Good luck!
