“I don’t want to say anything to him because he is new”. Do you see the issue with your statement. He needs to know what he is doing is not the way we operate.

I’m new and I would much rather somebody tell me if I’m overstepping. It’s also good to remind him that those other tasks are really important and nothing else would be able to run without them

I’ve been there I just say I don’t need help and take the cup or ticket out of their hand. If I’m on bar I’m on bar not them. Also be respectful but assertive just let them know to chill out a bit.

Being overeager is definitely a common trait amongst new employees everywhere, just say gently but firmly that, unless you ask for help, it is the barista on bar’s responsibility to finish and hand off their own drinks and it is actually more confusing because he’s getting you out of routine. Suggest if he wants to have more to do he could stock or connect with the person at register if there isn’t someone behind him. The intent is probably to prove he can do it well, but the execution is coming off rude- once he knows, then it is something you could escalate if he doesn’t act on your advice and direction. Good luck!
