DM making random changes during visits?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sararhiannon__
Does anyone else’s district manager come in and make arbitrary changes to policies and procedures that don’t align with what you’ve been directed by corporate? I’m all for changing things that don’t work but I feel like every time out DM comes in there’s something she changes that doesn’t make any sense.
For example.
Despite the DRB saying refrigerator temps should be 1-5°C (sorry American friends) our DM came in and said she considers 4°c to be “out of temp”..... the DRB also says freezers should be -18°c but she also considers -18° out of temp.....
It’s like she’s yanking our chain or something, I literally stared at my SM and pointed at the temps in the DRB and was like....allllrighty then.

Yes. Happens to us all the time. He even tried enforcing an all-black-shirts only dress code that was obviously not corporate policy and he was finally told that was above his pay grade to change.
Then he tried telling us he didn’t want any milks out on the counters, ever. Finished pouring one latte? Gallon goes back in the fridge. You have another drink that’s done in 2 seconds? Pull the milk back out of the fridge.
Don’t know why some DMs are like this, if it’s a power play or what. But it’s extremely annoying.

There are few reasons, a lot of times managers feel a need to change *something* to justify their role.
"hay boss, I make peons put malk back in fridge, money up, validate me plz!"
you see, managers don't produce anything. They're existence relies entirely on how well their subordinates perform. But managers have to demonstrate they're doing something that results in incremental financial improvement, and when they're out of actual ideas managers try *something* and hope the needle goes up so they can report an "action -> positive result," even if the correlation is dicey...doesn't matter because manager did *something* and numbers are up.

I’m pretty sure that’s standard for the milk.....even so it’s a pain to do. My asm just tries to have us put away things like the cream and whole milk on cold bar (or anything that’s out more than 30 minutes)

I hate it when DMs do this. When ours comes there is always random rearranging of things that just throws everyone off

It’s all Celsius at least anywhere I’ve worked in Ontario!

Even in America food service uses a mess of a mix of measuring units. Sometimes stuff is weighed out in grams, but some recipes are in ounces, except when it's liquids when its usually measured in imperial volume units, except sometimes it's liters.

My Dm came in and told us to stop charging for sub milks :)
Oh you're getting a white mocha Frappuccino with heavy whip? I won't charging you for the heavy whip! :)
I tried showing im store director (vons/albertsons company barista here) to show him that she had no idea what she was talking about and that it was policy for starbs but he told us to listen to her!
