Are y'all planning to strike or unionize?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thousandmilejourney
As a customer I'm frustrated that you all don't get treated better by one of the richest companies in the world. If you all strike, I would join you on the picket line. Just saying.

I try to do everything I can to make y'all's lives easier. I order ahead, keep customization to a minimum, say please and thank you, ask how you're doing and genuinely care, tip, etc. I'm really sorry that so many customers are a*******. Please feel free to comment on what else I can do to make your day easier!!

All of these things are basically perfect. I have two suggestions to add but that's basically it.
If you ever get emailed a survey, take it and answer all 7s if you can.
Write a note for the store manager telling them how great their team is -- if you can call out specific partners that can help them individually too.
[deleted]34 points2y ago
Will do, thanks for the tip ☺️
Keyndoriel3 points2y ago
Yeah the customer connection score is what really gets the higher ups on our ass and the question that matters most is "Did your barista make an effort to know you" or something along those lines. That is the make or break question.
[deleted]3 points2y ago
That's so ridiculous geez.
bryceofswadia2 points2y ago
That actually applies to any food service that has surveys. If you weren’t happy with the service, dont leave a survey. But if you do leave a survey, only do maximum scores. Never give a bad survey because it screws everyone over. Thanks for being a good person!!
LatterRooster3 points2y ago
This, if you have a bad experience ask for the manager... tell them right away. Reporting a bad experience doesn’t change anything in a survey... Because there are so many people working each day... We can always make things better with a conversation in person💝 As a partner, I’ve had some interactions with baristas at other locations that were terrible. I didn’t ask for a manager and tried to make the partner smile, even under a mask! Even asking about their day can change the dynamics of the situation dramatically! They were having a hard shift and just had someone ask to remake a drink 3 times... ya never know...

youre amazing— people have conflated perspectives on us baristas and expect a lot from us because of it; in short, we’re baristas/servers first and people second.. they just dont realize that if they give us their best, they’ll get the same in return (even though they already get our best! we try our hardest to meet expectations and demands albeit i cant speak for EVERY barista)
so thank you!!!!
Webshooter3813 points2y ago
Have some fun with your orders, especially if the store seems slow. Myself and other baristas like making new and interesting things. It can be annoying when there's a long line, but if it's just you and a few other people, then it helps keep the day interesting. I also enjoy helping guests find their new favorite drink.
bryceofswadia1 points2y ago
I think the more annoying thing is how rude people are about their custom drinks. If someone ordered a crazy drink but was extremely nice, tipped, and was generally patient and friendly, I wouldn’t have a problem making it.

I just want to say thank you for all that you do! It’s customers like you that really brighten my day at work, and make this job the joy that it is! ❤️

Starbucks is a ruthless union buster, so it would take a huge grassroots and clandestine (as in, not planning and discussing on open subreddits) effort. The government isn't going to be too keen on a union suddenly having thousands of new members.
A general strike across frontline retail and customer service seems to be picking up steam lately, maybe some stores here and there join in.
[deleted]22 points2y ago
The reason this came to mind is that McDonald's workers are striking at the moment.
rudebii19 points2y ago
Yeah, there's currently a ground swell of service employees walking out. It's happening everywhere, but it seems like it's on store levels, in other words, there doesn't appear to be a centralized or organized effort, people are just getting fed up and walking out.
jack511410 points2y ago
I finally put my two weeks in I'm tired of being gas lighted one second I'm being told I'm the best barista they have and I go above and beyond but when I ask for promotion to shift I get the run around and a list of things to work on myself every time I had enough and put my 2 week notice in yesterday actually
jujeevu2 points2y ago
Did you know or hear about career progression? It's being implemented later this month.
bryceofswadia3 points2y ago
Which is cool, but as long as there is no organizing, nothing will change. It may take a while but eventually Starbucks will find replacements. McDonalds will find replacements. The system is built so that there is always someone hungry enough to work one of these shitty jobs.
andrewdee022 points2y ago
As much as I appreciate the thought from a customer standpoint, it’s even more important to know that we are replaceable labor and store managers will go through the mud before getting new people
[deleted]22 points2y ago
IMO you're not as replaceable as they make you think. It takes a lot of time and money to hire and train new workers. They can't make money without you.
andrewdee023 points2y ago
You’d be surprised... store managers will hire anybody especially if they’re in dire need. Borrowed labor, transfers, modified store hours... you name it, they work around it
jack51146 points2y ago
Yeah they can hire someone new but can they replace your skill sets as fast as they rehire ....no I don't believe they can so that said remember your not as replaceable as they make you out to be to get a new hire to the point of being a seasoned barista takes months and time
bryceofswadia5 points2y ago
They’ll make money regardless of how experienced/trained we are. Times will be slower and quality will decrease, but in the end, Americans love to consume.

I remember being told if we try to unionize we will be fired. Not sure if striking will result in the same outcome
yyz_barista2 points2y ago
Not fired since that's illegal, but rather your store will probably be closed since it's suddenly not profitable anymore. :S
Saradigm7 points2y ago
I would like to unionize and we could easily put something together with all the redditor baristas, but that takes confidence I do not possess.
[deleted]5 points2y ago
For whatever it's worth, you have my support.

I think starbucks would strike it down. I actually left Starbucks for a union job that pays me 1.8 times more than I made there as a starting wage and I get increases every year and after 5 years, I’ll be a certified journeyman making nearly triple what I made at Starbucks. My new job is more secure, has set hours, tons of overtime opportunities and it’s actually less mentally taxing
ScalieDraggy3 points2y ago
I'm leaving.
DianaSilverthorn2 points2y ago
I fractured my arm and they wouldn't let me just do register while my arm healed. Ended up just going back to work bc EDD is too backed up and I need $
[deleted]2 points2y ago
Wow that's terrible. I'm so sorry.
bryceofswadia2 points2y ago
I live in a right to work state so any attempts at unionization will probably be unsuccessful :(

I work in a grocery store Starbucks we are unionized. Yet we are the lowest paid in the store. Batista make a cap of .60 over minimum wage. The Starbucks manger makes 4.50 over minimum wage. No raises. Our contract was just up but because of covid they recommended we not strike. Too many people are out of work and wouldn't be sympathetic. The only thing union give us is job security. If the Starbucks closes we could work elsewhere in the store. At starting wage. It really not worth the money taken off my paycheck to pay the union.
melodiic_7 points2y ago
found the corporate anti-union shill lmao
Canadiansbux2 points2y ago
I'm just sharing my experience. I certainly hope there are union reps that are better negotiators. I unfortunately don't have them.
melodiic_1 points2y ago
i was just joking, no offense meant! i 100% hear you, that unions aren't always looking out for the best interests of their workers! sorry to hear about your experience, hopefully the recent strikes will push unions to actually advocate for the people they claim to support!
