Question / Rant: Are we allowed to have our hands in our apron pockets?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by zombiecabbage
So today my SM snapped at me for having my hands in my apron pockets. I was standing by reg/warming as she was going over something with us and she said “Take your hands out of your pockets they aren’t supposed to be in your pockets. Go wash your hands.” She kinda snapped at me when she said it and I was genuinely confused because I’ve never heard of this before ??? Also like, who cares if my hands are in my pockets? I reach in my pockets a million times a day to grab my sharpie ??
I feel like she micro-manages everything I do and I’m trying to figure out if this is an actual rule or she’s just nit picking like she always does ugh

(I am in charge of CASA/Food Safety at my store) When CASA/Food Safety comes and audits its considered a "Major" infraction to touch your apron and not wash your hands, its right beside the touching hair/face. Your manager definitley should not have snapped at you and should have actually coached you, but you are technically not supposed to touch your apron even though everyone does it

I was originally taught that it was unacceptable just the same as tying the apron in the front instead of the back. But in my current district not many people know about this rule so everyone does it.

I see the tie in front a lot too, and it looks odd to me 😂

No, you're not supposed to, it's like the touching your clothes thing. As far as I know it's not just a local thing, but a nationwide thing as other jobs have griped about this as well in other areas. Since it's just beverage service and we use tongs for food, I've never had the rule imposed at Starbucks outside of ecosure being around

I know when we’d have health inspections my manager made a huge deal out of people not having their hands in their pocket, but wouldn’t care otherwise. I would assume we aren’t allowed technically, but most bosses don’t care.

....Wouldn't your hand be considered "in your apron pocket" when you reach in for a sharpie...? Does anyone wash their hands immediately after grabbing your sharpie to date something? I'm thinking no... It logically makes no sense.
This is the fourth time in 20 years that I've worked at Starbucks (for a total of about 8 years), and NO ONE has EVER told me that you can't have your hands in your apron pocket. No one. Not once. So if no one told you to not do it, then why should you know to not do it? I'm sorry, but no one deserves to be snapped at for something that they didn't know was against the rules. I'm sorry that happened to you. BUT NOW YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER (said with immense sarcasm...)
