Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

It drives me nuts when I go to another Starbucks and they don’t shake my tea 😑 (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tinabob
I go through the same Starbucks drive thru on my way home from a run and they -never- shake it. Sometimes I’ll just decide not to get a tea, but a couple months go by, and I’m thinking, “maybe this time they’ll shake it.” nope! I’m also too familiar with annoying customers so I never want to ask them to please shake it. I expect them to say “duh lady that’s standard, don’t tell me how to do my job.” And please save your, “iT tASteS No DiFfErEnT!” Yes it does! I love that it’s cold all the way through, it tastes DULL when it’s not shaken. I can always tell! Please just shake teas for the psychos like me that love a shaken tea and would never ask them to take it back and shake it and then drinks it sadly unshaken :(

Ok I’m done venting- love you 🥰

Disclaimer!: I’ve been a partner for 7.5 years and my whole store is great about shaking teas even when we’re crazy busy.
batbrain666 46 points 2y ago
maybe ask for it extra shaken to make sure they do it
tinabob [OP] 20 points 2y ago
I’ve thought about doing that too! Or saying, “can you shake it 7 times instead of 10?” Lmao
clumsycalico 16 points 2y ago
This is a good idea, that request wouldn’t feel out of place to me
lobosloboslobos 5 points 2y ago
This actually sucks, cause we’re supposed to do it regardless.
ShakervSphynx 33 points 2y ago
Bruh. Prior to working for the bucks, I was a craft cocktail bartender for 15 years. Shaking adds aeration, which in turn changes the mouthfeel which is an important part of how we taste things.
There’s other compounds such as oils in tea that when they are exposed to pressure or motion degrade and become lesser components of the overall flavor.

Long story short, shake yer teas. It’s how they’re supposed to be done and taste.
katnip094 13 points 2y ago
This I had no idea about - when we're busy I tend to slack on shaking teas (mainly no water ones), but never again. THANK YOU, I feel like an ass lol.
plimith 2 points 2y ago
Same, I'll shake the teas with you.
CLEf11 27 points 2y ago
If you get your tea unsweetened no water I'm not shaking it. If you get it without ice I'm not shaking it.
tinabob [OP] 11 points 2y ago
This is for some reason the same logic a lot of people have, I wouldn’t shake a tea with no ice, bc THATS for sure pointless, but the whole point of a shaken tea is not just to combine everything in the shaker, it’s to chill the whole drink with ice. Why bartenders shake cocktails, to make sure it’s a consistently chilled drink. Rather than the top half of the drink cold and the bottom half room temp. The ice melts within 5 min if you don’t shake it.
CLEf11 -4 points 2y ago
If it's a no water and unsweetened drink I just layer the ice. A scoop of ice, the tea, another scoop of ice
VxntiDr_gxn 4 points 2y ago
A scoop of tea I read this as 🤣

adding water makes the green taste gross. shaking ice into it adds more water. friction and stuff. Godd when I go to another store and get a watery green tea I'm always soo disappointed.

The upvotes are evidence that everyone agrees with you. Im not surprised
CLEf11 -4 points 2y ago
Did you read? Ill shake it unless it's no water or no ice

There is a lady who comes into my store gets a trenta no water no ice black iced tea… And she demands that it is extra shaken for some reason
CLEf11 -4 points 2y ago
If she comes through the drive thru don't do it. She won't see she won't know
they-were-roomates 18 points 2y ago
I had a borrowed partner at my store who didn’t shake their teas, I coached it but they still continued to not shake their teas.......
howdudo 6 points 2y ago
You will get promotions. That person is going to slowly stop being dependable and will quit. I grr n tee it
they-were-roomates 4 points 2y ago
(I just because am SSV about a month ago) 👍
tinabob [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Yeah, it’s very common. When I was just starting as a barista, I definitely didn’t shake my teas bc I thought it was no different. Until I started drinking the teas myself

You’re so right, the first time I got one as a customer the shaker sound caught my attention and I thought, “What is he doing?” Then I tasted it and it was so good, unsweetened green built to standard. I love all 3 of them. I often make myself a trenta passion tango before I leave. The word “shaken” is in the name so we need to do it
sierrobear 12 points 2y ago
I get soooo frustrated with the baristas at my store because the majority of them don’t shake anything but the coconutmilk drinks. I’m over here shaking every tea and refresher, and they make comments about how it takes so much longer and how our dt times are going to suffer. I’m so tired of them thinking that I’m being extra by making drinks to standard
VxntiDr_gxn 2 points 2y ago
It takes like 3 seconds to shake lollll what do they mean it takes a lot longer 🤣
Klthomp0127 9 points 2y ago
I hate when my refresher isn’t shaken!! I’ve been telling one store I regularly go to that I’d like it extra shaken and they told me it doesn’t taste different and that if I wanted it to taste different they can double blend it for me 🙃
I was pleased to give them my partner numbers at the window. Shaking isn’t hard, don’t be lazy.
stqmine 9 points 2y ago
Thats why I get the mango dragonfruit now since they’re kinda forced to shake it 🤣
Klthomp0127 1 points 2y ago
My old store has baristas who won’t shake any of the teas or refreshers. They plop the berries on top and call it a day 🙃

my fellow partner doesn’t shake certain beverages and i get that for some drinks you don’t need to. but then i’ll have customers yell @ me in drive thru saying this doesn’t look/taste right. and it makes sense if ur not shaking it does taste a bit off and apparently some ppl like the foam.
GlorisSkates 6 points 2y ago
When I make my own personal tea, I don’t shake it. But any tea a customer gets I will of course make to standard. Idk I just kinda like the layered taste (Passion tango sweetened with raspberry)
leekyabloh 5 points 2y ago
I shake whilst in cup if in a rush, the shaker lids fit the G/V cups, just don’t be messy or reckless because your “shaker” is plastic.
brigigigi 4 points 2y ago
sometimes when its busy but i still feel bad for not wanting to shake i pre pour all the drink ingredients in the cup and then just use the shaker to shake each one, makes it feel like im going faster lol. love, a shaker hater. esp with the new standard for teas to not have sweetener its even more tempting not to shake '-.-
tinydesthique 4 points 2y ago
i mean, personally, i don’t shake my own teas because it doesn’t taste all that different to me but that’s mainly because when i set it up in the cup, i give it a few swirls with the lid on before drinking it. and even when i make these drinks without the shaker, i still give the cups a nice swirl before giving it to a customer. i don’t shake as often because it gets way too busy and we are limited shaker cups, so, i try to be quick, prepare the tea in the cup, give it a swirly swirl with the lid on, and serve. but i am not at all opposed to using the shaker cups. i just wish we weren’t so high volume during the semester 😭😭 but it’s expected. i’m sorry to those who don’t like when their teas are not shaken!
starbsbista 4 points 2y ago
So crazy to me that this seems so common in the comments but my distract manager keeps managers keeping standards STRICTLY our shifts would murder us if we didn’t shake our tea...
salaciainthedepths 4 points 2y ago
The standard for iced teas (at least the summer launch in the uk) is not to shake them. I still would if requested & do for myself though.
lightweightlarkin 1 points 2y ago
I came looking for this! It’s important though when building the drinks the new way to do the tea first rather than syrup first as I’ve seen a few people do otherwise it definitely affects the taste. I also give the cup a quick swill around just to get the ice moving around and spreading the cold is dispersed properly (especially in the new confetti cups)
kxnkycxrly 3 points 2y ago
I need it shakened, I literally get it sweetened and I can tell when it’s not it’s so gross.
tricializ1 3 points 2y ago
OMG. This! Yesterday I was waiting for my quad shot espresso with SFV and splash of coconut milk and am glad I ordered this way as opposed to paying the extra $1.40 for the SAME thing except shaken as a “Shaken Espresso” because the partner on cold bar never shook some refreshers and when she did shake a drink, the max was only a few times with an average of two shakes. It really is just one of those things that makes my blood boil but like you I wouldn’t have them remake the tea over this. But you can definitely tell both in taste and visually if it has been shaken.
LatterRooster 3 points 2y ago
Love you for saying this! It annoys me when shaken espresso is not shaken! Or it’s only shaken twice or thrice! Not foam at all it’s basically an iced latte
Signifikantotter 3 points 2y ago
Thanks for posting this. I’ve become so used to saying “extra shaken” just because I’ve gotten so many flat teas. There’s lazy baristas out there, sure, but I don’t want them making my drinks.
TheFriendlyFeminist 3 points 2y ago
My manager explained it to me once as a justification for the price
andrewdee0 3 points 2y ago
I feel the same way lmaoo ima partner too and if I don’t see any layer of foam in my iced tea. I will gladly send it back. Except for anything with guava juice... it doesn’t foam for some reason 🧐
tinabob [OP] 6 points 2y ago
I noticed that about guava juice too! I always expect the guava passion fruit drink to have a nice foamy layer but it never does! I should just get more confident about asking for it shaken.... I just have too much inner conflict and then I’m already out the drive thru
ffelenex 2 points 2y ago
This is a good way to lose customers, get less tips and less labour. Plus people will think you're lazy. No wonder the company doesn't pay "well," baristas sometimes can't do the simplest tasks. My store is pretty vigilant about making drinks our best, quality over quantity is in the handbook. We aren't the busiest store but we make more tips than anyone around us, typically $1.30 to $1.80. OC, South California for reference.
VxntiDr_gxn 2 points 2y ago
Only time I don't shake teas is if they're no ice or if a customer asks for it not to be.
juiceyluicy 2 points 2y ago
There’s a couple partners at my store who won’t shake shaken drinks if they have certain mods (like no ice or whatever) but have told me if I’m watching them or I’m working they’ll do it right so I don’t tell them how to do it. At least the people I’ve trained do it correctly, some people refuse to listen to others when they’re wrong.
is_it_soy 2 points 2y ago
I so feel your pain. As a former barista, it makes me sad.

That’s why I jot down which stores have actually shaken my teas. And when I happen to be in a Starbucks elsewhere, I watch to see if they shake.

If they do, I’ll order something. If not, I never return to that store.
navkabar 1 points 2y ago
i totally agree
star_pants 1 points 2y ago
I'm the weirdo who actually hates my tears shaken... but if you really want to make sure it is then ask them to put it in the coldfoam blender. Just specific enough to make sure it gets aerated and get your order remembered
