How in the world do people afford these tik tok drinks??(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by EnvironmentalLoad828
Seriously how?? I can see buying it maybe ONCE but regulars who always order a $6+ drink astound me. These people are also always the ones who never tip too. If you can afford a $6+ drink, you can afford to tip.
Shoutout to all the customers who do tip regardless of drink complexity!! We all appreciate you!
garlicrotini300 points2y ago
My biggest pet peeve was when they would pay it forward and not tip. Like the person behind you can afford their drink that’s why they’re here lmao just tip your baristas
an-angsty-waffle139 points2y ago
An easy way to end that line is to tell the next car “hey it’s on us today” and the whole pay-it-forward line ends right there and they usually tip then too
garlicrotini68 points2y ago
I have done this many times and never had someone tip when doing this
ladyelenawf54 points2y ago
I had to start carrying cash because of this. I use the app to tip. So when it got paid forward, I had no way of tipping, I even asked once if there was some way around it. After that, I make sure I always have enough cash to cover the cost of my drink. Also, so when I use stars for my super expensive favorite drink I can still tip.
SelocAvrap49 points2y ago
When I was getting close to quitting someone started a pay it forward chain while we were backed up, and the next person said "is it okay if I pay for the person behind me?" and my visibly on the verge of tears dumbass just said "please don't"
honeydreamgirl62 points2y ago
i just say “the car behind u is a mobil order so theyve already paid :)”
Silly_Goose223 points2y ago
"Oh then the person behind them"
It's happened.
sandycat55511 points2y ago
I used to tell people it would mess up the screens and I wouldn’t know whose drink was whose. It was true too, when I was new.
If they’re using their app they might not even notice if you don’t charge them. People don’t realize the extent of the problems the pay it forward stuff causes.
SelocAvrap4 points2y ago
I did the first one too
rszdemon22 points2y ago
I do this every single time.
I justify it by saying that our window times suffer each time a person asks to pay it forward and know the balance behind them. Sorry not sorry
rio8envy78 points2y ago
I tell them the car behind them is a mobile and if our mobiles are off I just end it. I can’t take orders and keep it going it screws me up if I’m soloing.
TheBrookAndTheBluff7 points2y ago
But I love their faces when I tell them their drink was paid for by the person in front. They’re always so surprised and happy!
Ashesremindme21 points2y ago
I feel like that happens rarely. They have a brief moment of happiness followed by guilt and obligation to pay for the person behind them, then. And it's even worse if the person behind them has a $20 order when they only got a refresher or something. I just tell people it's been taken care of and they're good to go. It's true, and then they can enjoy their good luck without feeling like they have to pay for someone else.
FruitPoopLoops71 points2y ago
THIS
They legit sit there at window and watches us suffer, but rather than tipping their baristas they decide to pay for some random person who probably has more than enough money if they’re buying coffee at starbucks
This whole pay it forward is a massive middle finger to all the baristas working minimum wage and shows how little society thinks of us
LatterRooster27 points2y ago
I feel this, especially when someone is like “oh sure I’ll pay the 18 dollar bill behind me” I would never admit to doing this but If someone pays it forward with cash just put it in the tip jar and move on... I don’t mind doing it once or twice but it’s ridiculous when I end up having 20-30 people in line paying for the next. I’m also so annoyed that we can’t give first responders drinks anymore.
followingpigeons2 points2y ago
I once had someone give me $4.68 or something random in cash for the person behind them that had $30+ order. They drove away and it went straight into the tip jar.
LatterRooster1 points2y ago
Happened yesterday
drinkliquidclocks53 points2y ago
Yep this makes me so irritated. I've had people pay it forward to me when I visit other stores and I always give the $ I saved from my order straight into the tip jar (plus my actual tip)
garlicrotini32 points2y ago
That’s the way to do it!!!! Any free drink too those baristas are getting my would be total as a tip
rio8envy78 points2y ago
Agreed. I get the sentiment behind the gesture. It’s doing something nice for someone else and I don’t think it’s a the person can’t afford it as much as it is doing something nice for someone else. Like spotting the bill for a friend when you go out. It’s supposed to come across as a good deed.I think a lot of people do it for the stars too.
clumsycalico8 points2y ago
The best reason someone ever paid for the car behind them is because they were “courteous at the intersection” lol. It ended up being one of our nice regulars which was fun. He always comes with a small cooler for his Frappuccino and I don’t really know why but he’s such a sweet old man lmao
rio8envy71 points2y ago
Yeah we have someone pay for the car behind them because they let them in line (we have cars coming into dt from 2 directions) so when they do that I specifically say it’s because they let the car in from of them in. I’ve gotten tired of the pay it forward.
freezedriedhamsters3 points2y ago
What do I do as a customer when this happens? It feels so dumb but I don’t want the free drink (I would feel like an ass taking it and stopping the line)
Do I just accept my fate and continue the cycle?
garlicrotini18 points2y ago
Don’t pay it forward for the next car. Tip your baristas what you were planning on spending on your drink. It will end the clusterfrick that is paying it forward which will make your baristas happy and they will be getting a good tip which makes them extra happy :) thanks for asking! We love customers that want to be helpful like you!
freezedriedhamsters3 points2y ago
Can I tip on a card? What if I don’t have cash that day?
I tip relatively frequently, but only when I have cash
Ashesremindme7 points2y ago
You can't tip on a card, but don't even worry about it. Just don't pay for the next person.
Slapshot3823 points2y ago
Good point and nice comment.
FfierceLaw2 points2y ago
I had one of these pay it forwards going today and about 4 or 5 in the customer was a partner. I BEGGED her to just accept the gift and use her mark outs for something else, but NO, she paid for the next. You'd think a partner would understand. Plus technically she's probably not supposed to use her mark outs for someone else like that.
sherlock----7538 points2y ago
I bought one once. My daughter hated it so we never got it again. It wasn’t a crazy 948483 Add ons drink, but it was at least $7 for a grande. No thank you.
Sarahthelizard7 points2y ago
eeeek yeah
rudebii25 points2y ago
The Edward guy said in an interview that he only gets his employment-killing drink when he has enough stars and it comes out to about $14.
coronary_foliage2 points2y ago
is the edward guy... robert pattinson???
rudebii1 points2y ago
the guy with the drink that went viral.
Word_Uo24 points2y ago
Got a $13 drink one day, wasn't a tik Tok drink but had 12 shots and VSC foam, was shook that someone would pay that much for a single drink
MonstrousGiggling14 points2y ago
I mean I can kind of understand that because at that point they're literally just trying to exist. Like shit 12 shots?? Probably a college student or a doctor. Those seem to be the ones who get crazy high caffeine drinks.
inmymidst3 points2y ago
What the hell are you getting 12 shots for??
BaristaBeech6 points2y ago
My coworker has a one year old and a ten year old and is basically single parenting since her ex doesn’t wanna babysit his own kid so she usually has at least 12 shots everyday, we bet how many she’ll have
ladyelenawf19 points2y ago
Had to edit as my toddler grabbed my phone. 😂😂
As I've said here before. I carry cash to cover the cost of my drink. Also so I can tip when I use my stats for my favorite complicated drink. It ends up being almost $12. I only order it when I can go in to speak to a batista instead of shouting it all y'all from the car. Y'all have enough to put up with.
My husband bought me an espresso machine for my birthday and so I've learned to make my expensive drink at home. It's so much effort and y'all deserve the tip for when my ass cheats and uses stars to get it.
banditoburrit08 points2y ago
God bless you I would do anything for you if you came in my store.
ladyelenawf6 points2y ago
That explains why the 2 stores I frequent go out of their way to talk to me even when they are busy.
banditoburrit04 points2y ago
All it really takes to get excellent customer service is to be a good customer!
ladyelenawf7 points2y ago
I try. I was a cashier in a grocery store, then an optometrist's receptionist, and then survived 3 years in a TMaybe customer service call center.
Still prefer my time in the military to all that crap. I know that I don't have the patience to work for service.
Myra-otaku17 points2y ago
Honestly, it makes me wonder what a tip free society looks like. They exist. Lol pay your people real wages they can live off of and eliminate tipping. And yeah the price will go up, but it’s the REAL price of the drink. In the meantime we buying food and beverage at like half the price because you got servers at half minimum wage and places like Starbucks at minimum wage and under charging. And there is research and I know a few restaurants that have shown how employee satisfaction goes up when they have a reliable set pay check. They know what they are going to make and not having to count up pennies to see if they made the difference between their wages and their bills. Tipping is not a reward, it’s an excuse to sell things at a discount.
As a former barista, and now a customer, I’m happy to pay the cost of a tip with my drink. The only time I don’t tip is when I go to a Target and I know the baristas are making $15 an hour and they can’t accept tips and my drink is (generally) gonna cost more anyway.
chiile-anyways_uhm15 points2y ago
SO to one regular we had who tipped us $50 cus some asshole stole our tip jar. I wanted to cry😭💕
bro456789612 points2y ago
The best is when customers get almost mad/annoyed and demand to know why the person ahead of them paid for their drink. I’m always like... “um I guess they were trying to be nice??”
randomhoe9999 points2y ago
I never get it these kids (middle schoolers) order 7 dollar drinks twice a day When I was a kid I used to collect quarters around my house to afford the occasional frap
bretie7 points2y ago
If a customers pays Starbucks for their $6 drink and they do not put money in the tip jar, we’re they able to afford their drink?
kxnkycxrly6 points2y ago
If someone pays it forward, I just put my money that was for my drink in the tip jar.
ScalieDraggy3 points2y ago
I have someone who spends about $60 a week on drinks. No tips from them.
coffee_tables3 points2y ago
We have a regular couple that comes in 2 to 4 times a day and orders the same thing and they usually spend about $12 each time they come by. I don't even know how they afford so many drinks in a day its insane. He only tips when one of our female coworkers takes his order too... but thats only sometimes
Disastrous_Excuse2471 points2y ago
I don’t like it because I have to tell the person when they pull up that there order was paid for. It’s always so awkward and then they ask me why? Like how tf do i know😭
adorkablysporktastic1 points2y ago
Oh man. Now i feel bad for the pay it forward thing. I did it once because this guy had been waiting to turn in to the drive through but he had to cross traffic, and i went right before he was able to, so i paid for his coffee. Hopefully i didnt start a whole string of it.
Sorry!
Social-Introvert-2 points2y ago
This happens a lot where someone feels they cut someone else off or may have been driving aggressively and realized they’re in front of them in line and pay for their drinks lol. I’ll just tell them the person ahead of them didn’t see them and hoped paying for their caffeine can be accepted as their “Sorry”. I divert the conversation so the person behind them isn’t even considered. I’ve known some folks who treat themselves to a pricey SBuX drink to make themselves feel better about life. When humans get depressed, we like to buy new clothes or shoes. For some that can’t afford that, a $6-7 TikTok drink is more in line with their finances. Some actually have a sbux fund where they save up each week for their next drinks. It’s kind of crazy but in the scheme of things, there’s much worse addictions/dependencies to have. I’ll admit being a customer before a partner, I frequently visited my nearest sbux twice a day. Thankfully, my company paid me back for it because it was considered a food expense, but when someone paid it forward and I was the recipient, it absolutely made my day! So I guess my point is that it makes people’s days. They may not show it to you, but that person feels better than when they arrived, guaranteed.
adorkablysporktastic1 points2y ago
I am one of those that used to budget drive-thru coffee because i had a 90 minute commute to work. Now we only get sbux when we're on our 3 hour drive to my in-laws.
Fragrant_Ad57401 points2y ago
I went to dunkin a while back with my friend and the lady told her no straight ass face lmao

Sorry didn’t think I was in school lol
Stellar-naut1 points2y ago
After working in this crap chute for 3 years, im just wondering why people don't get regular coffee. At the end of the day, its the same damn thing. Its fucking coffee
GirlGangX3-40 points2y ago
Lol what do you mean? Lots of people have money.
boothbygraffoe-26 points2y ago
Stop asking for tips and demand a better wage!
The TikTok shit is ridiculous and I'm sorry you have to suffer so many idiots, but...
Make "the price" the price and pay your staff a living wage with benefits as needed by market.
No one should have to budget for their lives with a line item based on hope.
mtgoddard12 points2y ago
I absolutely agree. But as long as this is the system we’re surviving in... tips are very kind
boothbygraffoe0 points2y ago
That are and as a one time partner 1998 - 2001 and a bartender for many years I tip generously. That said, everyone needs to advocate for a living wage for all and the current tipping system is a tool used to suppress that goal.
