What's the worst shift to work?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TrentaGreenBean
Hi, new green bean here! It's only the end of my first week (not counting training because it didn't really help prepare me for what I've endured so far). My question is simple: what do you consider the worst shift to work? It seems like my store is dead set on making me a closer and It's been hell so far. We had two nights in a row that we were short staffed, as well as various other things that have gone wrong during the shifts. I'm not sure if its because I'm new, but closing has been really rough.

Ignoring the morning shift favoritism that seems to be in many stores where evening is blamed for everything even if it has nothing to do with them. It kind of just depends on you. Morning shift wakes up super early, but gets the opportunity to do things after their shift. The business you get in the evening can make or break your ability to close on time and it’s worse when you are down a partner. Those are the big differences I can think of, feel free to add to it.

And in city stores closing can have a whole ‘nother set of issues that isn’t even Starbucks. I was at one store and the closers had way too much experience with people overdosing. (Can still be a problem on other shifts, but more common on close)
For me closing tasks are easier, but the lifestyle (never having an evening free or a good time to run errands on work days) and the fact that I could never feel proud of my work (no sense of “great peak guys!” just a list of unfinished tasks) make it much harder on me.

Yeah, I'm sure closing is easier at slower stores but mine is super busy throughout the day.

I would have to say mid shift is the worst of everything, especially on a Sunday. Sunday is the day most of the best partners get off, so it's a lot of the less experienced people working. Sunday also has a prepeak at our store that starts at around 9:30 or so, and peak may be starting any time between 10 and noon, and ending between noon and 2. It's also the day that there's only an opening shift and a closing shift, where every other day we have a lot more overlapping coverage. Sunday opening as a shift is my hardest day, but the closer has it harder in all honesty. I can only set up so well, once peak starts 🤷.

I havent done close or open yet but peak is stressful. I just try and remember, we are making lattes not saving lives.

I don’t like mid shift at my location because it’s always the least staffed, especially on the weekends. I like peak in the morning because we always have enough people to be comfortable since peak numbers are so important to corporate.

tbh any shift where i get scheduled 5.75 hours so i dont get to have a half. (fr though, i prefer closing, more freedom and i get to just put my head down and work. mornings are easier but i hate getting up early, and tbh morning crew screws closing crew over a lot so be careful.)

Besides the obvious of having free time after a morning shift vs. free time before a night shift, in my experience of three years:
Mornings: - Tend to be more staffed - Tend to be easier orders (at least before noon) - Tend to be busier - MUCH more likely to run into your SM or DM
Afternoons: - Tend to get less staff - Partners must flex more as a result - Tend to have more absurd orders - Business can be hit or miss, less consistent but damn you will feel it if it is busy
But without a doubt, the worst shift that I can get scheduled for is 11:00-7:00
It also definitely depends on who you’re working with. I’d take any shift with the right people over a preferred shift time with the worst people

Closing can be pretty rough, but I've found you make the best friends in the closing shift.
If you're looking for specific days that might be a bit overwhelming, Thursdays (Happy Hour), and Saturdays/Sundays (Weekends...) can be rough.
