Don’t Know What To Do, But Don’t Want To Quit!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by InfiniteFriez
So I got thrown into the job head first.
It took forever to get my account corrected so by the time it did all of my “training” came from just doing the job on site. We have a very very busy and chaotic environment where we are batching large orders and constantly scrambling to keep up with Mobile, In-Store, and our always backed up drive-thru.
Here is my struggle: I never got a chance to complete training modules. I don’t feel like I’ve learned as quickly as everyone else.
I mess things up and forget things regularly. When I do, other baristas scoff and roll eyes at me. The person who trained me has been very curt and downright a bit nasty with me.
The thing is, I also have a learning disability (Adult ADHD). I requested to move to a less busy store and I don’t think it’s going to be considered. I have work in about 30 minutes and I’m sadly dreading going in to be on this team that I don’t fit in with, and that I underserve regularly because of all of this.
What should I do? I don’t want to quit :(

Barista Basics is a joke. I did it twice because I thought I must have missed something, but no. I accessed it from home from the hub, I could not concentrate at our store. The best help has been from cheat sheets available on reddit, especially from a partner, firebreathingcabbage. That partner has sheets on a Google drive that have been recently updated. They share it either on this sub or r/starbucks, I can't remember which. I didn't worry about "working off the clock" because it made my work on the clock so much better to know a thing or two

You’re not undeserving. Trust me. Even as a leader, I question my role and question if I’m even capable of the position. Even tho, I’ve been in this position and I’m doing great. It’s just my own self interrogation. Especially if you’re slightly new,, it take about 5-6 months to realllyy get w the groove. And I’m sure you fit in. Even if you don’t tHATS okay!! Just remember it’s just a job and other people’s perception of you isn’t actually you. Good luck at work today!

Yess, I love to hear thttt. I’ve only been with the company for 2 years and I started when I just turned 17 and now I’m 19,, it’s worth it in the long run but, I and your fellow partner believe in you <3

Don’t! Your feelings are valid. I take a whileee to learn and have a grasp on things (former SSV :). It’s honestly a learning curve and once you get your sequencing down and your candence, it’ll be a breeze most days. Do get your modules done tho. I would reach out to a shift on the floor or whoever checks you in that day. You seem to be doing great and trying your best. I also have ADHD so this job can be soooo stressful sometimes. But honestly, being quick is important but what’s more important is that you take your time and remember how much people pay for these things, that helps me try to do my best. My store is the exact same way 🙃

tbh i would totally look into transferring. learning how things work always comes with time, thats not what worries me, but part of the reason i learned so fast is that all of my partners are super understanding and helpful. if the people around you are being like that, i would see if you can transfer. this job is only worth it if youre surrounded by good people.

It all takes practice! I took like 2 months after training to get everything in my mind and I still make mistakes sometimes! The main point is just to make sure you don't repeat your mistakes so each time you learn it stays in your "database". As long as you don't forget things you already learned you'll be fine.

Yeah that whole concept and ADHD don’t mix. That’s the point of this post.

Go higher up. Do you have a shift supervisor you work with regularly? If so go to them first, tell them your frustrations and that you want to be good at this job and that you can be with better training. Your trainer acting like that is not ok! Neither is the way the other baristas are treating you. We are supposed to be a welcoming environment for everyone, especially our other partners.
If you don’t feel you can go to a shift supervisor, talk to your ASM or SM. Don’t be intimidated by them. They are here to help you succeed.
This is really frustrating to me cuz my trading was screwed up too, and it took me a long time to find my stride. Like I was still scared to bar a year after I started. I’m fine now but I feel like it was made worse by the fact that I didn’t speak up.
