what’s up with masks? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by plastixhearts
so ik the cdc issued their thing saying vaccinated people don’t have to wear masks indoors but does that apply to inside our stores? my SM had no guidance for us. im a little concerned as a chronically ill/high risk barista, but obviously if people are allowed to come in without masks I can’t do anything about it. does anyone know if we’re still enforcing it or not?

we should strike. we make terrible wages for the enormous profit we generate for this company. we all know damn well they wouldn’t be able to replace us quickly enough, they’d lose millions in revenue and they’re not willing to do that. we generate their profit, we have the power here. we should be striking for better wages (especially in drive thru stores) and better safety precautions.

Hey guys! My district is currently organizing a potential strike so I'm going to tell you what we've done so far.

First, we've connected with partners at multiple stores and created different groupchats for people to voice questions and concerns. You should talk to partners that frequently take shifts at multiple stores because they probably have multiple lines of contact! We put together a petition for our district for everyone to sign, listing our demands, and sent it to corporate through our DM. We have agreed that if we do not get the results we want by Monday, we will be holding a strike/ sick out.

The most important thing we can do is talk to each other AND the partners we see everyday. Please please please know that you won't be alone if you decide to organize! You have support from partners across the county. Because of the labor shortage, we have more power than we ever did and we have to us that to protect ourselves and our partners!!!

Y’all have to be careful who you talk to, you don’t want management getting any info before you act. So yes you need numbers of partners but choose wisely, it only takes one to snitch and the whole plan gets messed up.

Idk what it's like for Starbucks outside of my district, but we were told our cafe seating was going to open June 1st. Then two days later, after that announcement, we were told in 3 days we would no longer require masks at all. Inside. I'm extremely disappointed in Starbucks, as my state is in the bottom 10 for vaccination percentage. Our covid response has been pitiful. We were told it was because we are "following other local businesses" but most places I know of have come out and said they will still require masks in their stores and aren't making any big decisions yet. My SM really shot everyone's concerns down. He said we need to strive for "normalcy". Sure.

there’s going to be a spike of cases, I can feel it already
Many-Medicine6836 4 points 2y ago
oh 100%. I'm at a high volume store and remember days our cafe was so packed people were shoulder to shoulder with lines to the front register out the door. One of such days was father's day last year, which most people consider the worst day they've ever worked at a Starbucks, hands down. Good thing we are opening just in time for that.

My SM told us masks weren't mandatory anymore. We aren't allowed to tell customers to wear them. But we baristas are still required to wear masks.
plastixhearts [OP] 3 points 2y ago
i don’t understand this
AriAristotle 9 points 2y ago
Right. Like, god forbid we possibly transfer covid to the customers. But them transferring it to us? Totally fine

$1

Employees are required to wear masks still. For customers, it is optional *unless local/state mandate says otherwise.*
plastixhearts [OP] 12 points 2y ago
oh my god we’re all gonna get covid
NothingToSeeFolks 3 points 2y ago
Super grateful that (for now) there’s still a mask mandate in my area. This is going to be a disaster.

im from Connecticut and my governor just doesn’t care he’s like “no masks! get ur vaccine and you can have a free beer!”
KaleSalad201 3 points 2y ago
My SM said Starbucks policy still states to wear masks in stores so we are still requiring masks inside even for vaccinated individuals. There’s no way to prove someone has been vaccinated and therefore it puts us in danger because unvaccinated people can come in without masks and claim they’re vaccinated, and as far as I know Starbucks has not released any statements saying masks are no longer required inside and as a private business we can require masks still
plastixhearts [OP] 2 points 2y ago
i guess now they say we cant enforce it? per one of the links on this thread
dazedandconfusedhere 0 points 2y ago
Sadly they have released a statement 😩

from what my manager said: starbucks is saying masks are optional starting monday the 17th, BUT it does ultimately come down to county guidelines on whether or not we'll enforce the mask. baristas have to wear a mask regardless so this only applies to customers

(we've had our café open for seating & bathrooms open since mid-april)
sadilg 1 points 2y ago
unfortunately i would join *a* strike but I work in a starbucks inside a Safeway where safeway doesn’t care about their employees whatsoever

From what I understand, in the next couple days sbux will make a statement about allowing customers to go without masks. Ik the CDC was talking vaccinated ppl but from what I’m hearing and trying to understand; it doesn’t look like we’ll be checking for cards, I guess it’s just a free for all at this point. Due to OSHA right now partners will still be wearing masks (which is totally fine to me) but I’m sure it won’t be long before they change their stance as well. I don’t think sbux is gonna make us give up masks cold turkey on our end if we wanna continue wearing them though (at least for a bit)
plastixhearts [OP] 2 points 2y ago
im happy wearing my mask I wish customers were as well. Another user posted the statement in this thread if you want to check it out
