Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

My break is my break, don’t sit and talk to me about what position I’ll be at when I clock back in (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by temporarynothings
I swear I am THIS close to just sitting in my car for my 10s and lunches from now on. It’s small and cramped and uncomfortable but if it means I get peace and quiet so be it. Both of my 10s and my lunch my SSVs we’re constantly in the back telling me “You’ll be taking over for so-and-so” “Actually you’ll go to Front” “Not to bother you but what time are you back? (literally 2 minutes after I clock out for my 30)” “Can you do x, y, and z for me when you get back...”

I tell them all the time I don’t want to know what I’m doing until I’m back from my 10/lunch. They just don’t care and always do it.
AMarie-MCMXCI 177 points 2y ago
Tell them you'll be adding the time that they're talking to you to your break if they keep doing it.
NOTcreative- 157 points 2y ago
It’s actually policy if your lunch is interrupted you get to start your lunch over. Your meal break is expected to be an uninterrupted 30 minutes and if that’s not what’s happening you get to start over to have 30 uninterrupted minutes.

OP I would sit down with SM and have the policy ready to go and explain that you don’t feel like your breaks are not being respected and you’re being asked to work while on break by talking about work. If SM is dismissive can escalate to DM or ethics and compliance.
cryingoverspiltmiIk 13 points 2y ago
~~Starbucks policy also says that every time you miss a break or your lunch or rest break is interrupted, you’re entitled to an extra hour of pay. Not sure how you would go about claiming that, but even just bringing it up might be enough to make a supervisor stop doing that all the time~~

Edit: misspoke here, unfortunately. Apparently it’s state-specific.
midgethepuff 5 points 2y ago
Do you have a link/pic of this policy? I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had to skip my lunch, but it’s been a lot.
cryingoverspiltmiIk 1 points 2y ago
I just re-read the partner guide and couldn’t find it anywhere, so I think that rule is actually state-specific. So if your state requires uninterrupted meal breaks, you might have some recourse, but otherwise you might not.
temporarynothings [OP] 76 points 2y ago
I take 12s anyway HAHA i mean they’re literally back there for at least half of my 10 talking to me about where i’ll be after i think i deserve the extra 2mins
philosopher_cat_lady 30 points 2y ago
One time I was drinking water and taking my medication and my shift supervisor said, "I need you back on the floor. You've been off the floor for more than ten minutes." I wasn't gonna let that shit stand. I said, "I washed my hands then set a timer for ten minutes." That's literally what I did. Then I was taking a few more seconds to take a swig of water and my medication. (I didn't do this during the ten minutes because I wanted to stay seated, I guess, and I hadn't grabbed my water on the way to the break table. I love getting to rest my legs for ten minutes.) But they wanted to be a hardass about how I was off the floor for technically longer than ten minutes. Calm. The fuck down.
is_it_soy 25 points 2y ago
THIS!
sten45 15 points 2y ago
It’s a standard policy in every union bargaining unit contract
Digitalwitness23 74 points 2y ago
Starbucks is also the only place I've ever heard of only giving "10's" instead of "15's". Someone call me out if I'm out of touch, but 10 minutes is a joke.
temporarynothings [OP] 20 points 2y ago
I’ll take it. My last job was McDonald’s and they only required 30s if you were there longer than 5 hours. To me, the 10s are a luxury haha
scmfckwaido 11 points 2y ago
Right? I was soo confused when i had my first one. Like ten minutes? My past two jobs had paid fifteens
lilisredditaccount 10 points 2y ago
My old office job I got two 10s and a 30, which is the same as Starbucks. When I worked at a previous restaurant, I only got a half hour lunch break for a 10 hour day. So I’ll take the two 10s and the 30 lol
JeanLucPicardsAss 7 points 2y ago
Canadian barista here we get two 15's and a 30 depending on the length of the shift
kid-muscles 7 points 2y ago
We get 15’s in MD but that might be because of state labor laws.
rasperries 5 points 2y ago
I work at a target Starbucks and target policy is twp 15 min breaks and one clocked out 30 min lunch for every 8 hour shift but we never get our last 15 at Starbucks because 90% of the time it’s only 1-2 people and we always feel guilty leaving one person alone when it’s nonstop busy :/
bryceofswadia 4 points 2y ago
My last job didn’t even have breaks because my state has no real labor laws.
TheSwimmingBrain 1 points 2y ago
What state is that?
bryceofswadia 2 points 2y ago
Arizona.
issybellars228 3 points 2y ago
I work in a Canadian store and by-law states a fifteen for every two hours worked, and a 30 is required if the shifts are 5 hours or longer.
For some companies they give an hour lunch to accommodate the amount needed, but my starbucks does a fifteen and 30. If it's 8 hours we get a second fifteen
dthomp0806 3 points 2y ago
Yep. Every other job I've had or anyone i know has had, has been 15 minutes. 10 is a joke.
A_Will_Ferrell_Cat 3 points 2y ago
Not sure where you are but 10s are pretty standard as it's the bare minimum (at least where I'm at) that an employer is required to give if an employee is working for more then 4 hours. All previous jobs have been 10s too.
packers1503 1 points 2y ago
Unfortunately my workplace only does 10s too :( in the US too, but at least they know not to call us at all
Acceptable_Leather99 1 points 2y ago
It’s a local policy- some dicks sporting goods (my last job) do it too, 100% depends on local laws. My one dsg location was in MD and I got 15s, the other was in DE and I got 10s, for example. Definitely not just the bux
Digitalwitness23 1 points 2y ago
I worked at Teavana for a number of years where we got 15's. When they all got shut down, I was transferred to a Starbucks in the same town and only got 10's.
Acceptable_Leather99 1 points 2y ago
Still probably local laws, just because teavana didn’t do the bare minimum doesn’t mean starbucks cannot, you know? Some companies keep it consistent and use the same break times nationwide as well to make transfers smoother for their employees, so you could have been using the bare minimum of a different state at Teavana. That or the local law could have changed between when the teavana opened and the starbucks opened causing starbucks to be lower, too. There are many reasons why it could have been different, but they can only use 10s if the local laws allow it and they definitely aren’t the only company to do it, and companies do not have to give only the bare minimum, they just have to give at LEAST the bare minimum, which is why two stores who are neighbors can have different break policies

I do go sit in my car. It’s actually nice. I enjoy the peace and quiet in my car

My nice SM has been letting us take breaks in the cafe even though it's closed to customers. It's great, our little BOH is cramped and busy
temporarynothings [OP] 19 points 2y ago
we can too! i just don’t like to bc our customers have a serious staring problem, or will come sit next to me like “is it good if i sit?”
FfierceLaw 9 points 2y ago
“Bad customer! Down, boy!”
Coffee_4_Cigarettes 4 points 2y ago
That's when you get up and move to a new spot. Ugh that's annoying for you, sorry you can't have a moment of peace.
JeanLucPicardsAss 13 points 2y ago
I take every single break in my car. I also do not use the bathroom on my breaks very often, only on the floor (if it's not crazy busy) pee on starbucks time my friend
b0gw1tch 2 points 2y ago
Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime
sugarysweetjazz 12 points 2y ago
I’ve been hanging outside at the tables for my half since the weather’s been warming up. Soaking some vitamin d while refreshing has been helping me out lately if that helps 🙂
temporarynothings [OP] 5 points 2y ago
We have one table outside and it’s always got 6 people surrounding it bc we aren’t opening seating inside yet
midgethepuff 2 points 2y ago
Ditto! Patio for the win!
designated-grapes 9 points 2y ago
I'm afraid that if I take my 30s in my car, I'm going to drive home and neve come back cos somedays be like that 😂😂😂
chinfox 6 points 2y ago
now how do i make my sm stop talking to me on my breaks
HamiltonPolka 5 points 2y ago
When I was a shift I would tell the partner to take their ten and when they get back to do x y z. If your shift can’t plan ten minutes in advance then they are kinda weaaak
temporarynothings [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Both shifts at my store (we only have two ssvs and then my SM 😃) have no backbone. If things get even slightly busy they just shit down, and we baristas will have no choice but to come up with a plan of our own ...so them changing their mind 4 times in 10 minutes isn’t surprising
empressjuliet 5 points 2y ago
I pop in my earbuds and will look someone dead in their eyes and ignore them. You have the rest of my shift to talk to me. Unless something behind me is on fire, leave me alone.
abrumm94 5 points 2y ago
I used to sit in my car because even getting away from other employees and sitting out in the cafe, I would have customers try and talk to me or constantly asking me for the code or to unlock the bathroom. IM ON A BREAK LEAVE ME ALONE.
eat-reddit-tv 5 points 2y ago
I tell them that I won’t remember anything since my brain turns off during my breaks. And it seems to work with most of them.

But seriously, they could write down their message and leave a note for you to read when your break is over.
DieLawnUwU 4 points 2y ago
I tell my people to go on their 10’s and immediately will tell them where they need to be afterwards. Not while they’re in the middle of their 10’s
otterpopemo 6 points 2y ago
Thissss. I tell folks « hey you’re about to go on your ten, can I start a food item for you? Or a beverage? » then « hey your food is done and you’re going to go on your break, when you get back I’m going to have you go to XYZ position for so and so ». It’s not that hard lmao
3aTroop 3 points 2y ago
When I talk to a partner about what role I’ll be asking them to go to, I’ll start off with an apology for interrupting, then brief talk, then tell them to take a couple more minutes on their break. I know their time is valuable and they need all the decompression they can get.
temporarynothings [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Yeah that I don’t mind- when it’s just a brief “hey! when you’re back go to front and food!” it’s fine. But my SSV is back there literally every 5 minutes “hey I know I’ve already been back here twice but I think I’ll have you on cafe mobile instead, but I’ll let you know if things change” 😭😭
Willing-Regret4142 3 points 2y ago
i ALWAYS go to my car during my breaks
ShannyES 2 points 2y ago
I strongly dislike when I arrive early and my ssv wants to tell me how bad of a shift they’ve had and how tough the night is going to be.

I’m always nodding to the story but in my head I’m like “why the fuck am I clocking in? Just walk out. You don’t even enjoy this. Just go”.

Or they’re telling me their game plan for the evening. I’ve started saying “I’m not on” or “dang. Let me clock in first”.
ohamilkshake 2 points 2y ago
i've gotten into the habit of sitting in my car for both 10s and lunches. i don't wanna think about work plus i usually have reading to do for school. i used to bust my ass & now take breaks because my coworkers were more important to me than a break but now i realize i deserve it
Chonky_Fire 2 points 2y ago
Bring a big pair of headphones and face away from any direction where someone could wave at you. It's what I do and I don't get bothered.
kooo2001 1 points 2y ago
I sit in my car that way not a single person can bother me or ask me questions, i’ve done this for all my jobs!
[deleted] 1 points 2y ago
[deleted]
thechamelioncircuit 1 points 2y ago
Thankfully my coworkers don’t bother me, but most of the time I go sit in the grass next to our store (urban sprawl)
kxnkycxrly 1 points 2y ago
I like to sit at our outside tables and put my headphones in. If they try and talk to me I just point to my headphones.
InfiniteFriez 1 points 2y ago
I sit in my car. Every time.
Elliotisnotokay 1 points 2y ago
Or even just sit outside. I just go sit on the curb
impasse602 1 points 2y ago
This is why i sit outside on our patio
star_pants 1 points 2y ago
Absolutely do, and if someone asks why then straight up tell them that's why.

Or, interrupt them when they talk to you and remind them you're on a break. Be rude about it if you got to but nice when you're back on the clock and it'll get the point across. Might have to for it for a week though
tamstr8 1 points 2y ago
not to mention being asked to report your tips on your ten like w h a t
bitter-barista 1 points 2y ago
What the actual f*?
philosopher_cat_lady 1 points 2y ago
Right?! My manager will start chatting with me about whatever, not realizing I'm on my break. I don't want to be rude to her--I really like her--but I'm also thinking to myself, "I have got to pee so badly, and my SS is expecting me back at work in ten minutes."

You've definitely got the right idea to start taking your breaks where your SSV's can't easily reach you. When COVID started, it was impossible to do that because the door to the stores were kept locked. But now it's easy again to go outside, go to your car, go wherever you need to go to get your mental break. I personally don't mind much at all being told where I'll be after my break, but you're right that you deserve to be treated like you're not at work when you're on your break. That's the definition of a break. Even worse than that is when I used to hang out in the cafe having breakfast or whatever, as a customer, not on my shift, and my manager or an SSV would ask me if I wanted to clock in early. Has happened tons of times. Made me want to stop going to my store before my shift. (As if it's my problem they're so fucking understaffed.)

I'll tell you a funny story about that really quickly. One time I went to my store to eat breakfast. I like to have a cup of coffee, actually have time to enjoy it, write in my journal, etc., etc. Anyway, the particular barista taking my order decided to enforce the thirty-minute rule on me. (It was likely because she was trying to become an SSV.) I decided not to get anything to eat or drink. Since there were only two people working in the store at the time, the SSV asked me if I wanted to clock in early. I did my people-pleasing thing and said yes, having not eaten anything that day. It turned out it \*was\* within thirty minutes before my shift. I didn't get to eat until much later that day.

This is where I love my kiosk.. I can take multiple breaks really if its dead, not only that but Im usually not bugged by whoever Im workin with lol!
