“HEY EVERYONE MY PRINTER IS BROKEN I NEED Y’ALL TO LINE UP AND TELL ME YOUR ORDERS ONE AT A TIME SO I CAN MAKE THEM”(reddit.com)

cafe/mobile bar clocked out right at our busiest hour and we had like 12 people in the cafe so i just yelled at everyone to line up and tell me their drink. and it worked. i got them out. people listened and were gracious. im,,, aghast. i hope those customers had a great fucking day.
“why didn’t you write on cups?” no one at my store knows the drink codes off the top of their head and i wouldve wasted so much time trying to decipher whatever was written.
“why didn’t you re-route the tickets to drive-bar printer?” drive-bar was already insanely busy and we were in the process of troubleshooting the other printer. we re-routed it after that failed. it normally does it automatically but didn’t this time.
edit: really outed myself and where i’m from by using “y’all” lmao fuck🤠🥴

I’m in California and say y’all all the time 😂
TylerJ71610 points2y ago
Nah I live in northern Illinois and use y'all frequently so Idk where you are lolol

I’m assuming Tennessee?
Signifikantotter36 points2y ago
Wait, please catch me up. Baristas don’t learn the drink codes anymore? It took me *years* to stop reading license plates as drink orders. We didn’t have this ticket system, we always wrote on cups.

I still read markings and only use them if a drink needs to be remade or if something breaks.I didn’t have tickets for like 4 years but then got stickers when I transferred so I don’t think they train markings anymore. Idk I’m not a trainer (yet). It’s a good skill to have
drowninginristretto2 points2y ago
It’s kinda in the training, it’s an optional portion. But I teach all my green beans at least the general rules for it… makes remakes easier

I've been a partner for over 2 years and my SM told me when I was training to skip that module, "because now we have stickers" 😒 I had to learn the codes on the floor when printers went down
moon_light5237 points2y ago
I got trained in December and got trained in the drink codes, but the guy that trained me does more than most trainers do I think
Webshooter384 points2y ago
My store doesn't use printers and only uses drink codes, but each of us have different codes for the drinks
melodiic_2 points2y ago
my store doesn't officially train on drink codes, but i was originally hired at a very old and small store that wrote on cups so i was taught using them. now, i teach green beans to use them whenever our printers break. my store's too high volume and drinks are too modified these days for us to not have a ticket printer lmao
chamorrobro1 points2y ago
The problem is that it’s taught quickly for training, but then it isn’t often used due to all stores having printers. It’s a given, but not using that kind of knowledge causes it to fade quick. I only knew it when I worked at a DT store a few years ago because I had done some cover shifts at cafe stores that didn’t have the sticker printers yet.

My store manager was hired YEARS after me, I had to write a cup the other day and he didn't know what they were.. don't even know why it's still in the barista training. As for myself, I'd probably be confused too, even after several years.. have you seen how long the codes are now?!
I could probably write out entire words and directions faster and my baristas wouldn't have any trouble.
So grateful your customers weren't a-holes about this 💜

I started my Starbucks Journey at a Target then a Hospital location, both with no printers so I learned my codes and used them every day. When I meet a partner who knows codes I get super excited.
Dazzling_Cut_686211 points2y ago
I came from a licensed store where that’s all we used. I’m having a harder time reading the stickers. Can’t tell you why...I just struggle. 🤣
Mistakecupcake5 points2y ago
One small benefit of codes is that they can be read with little more than a quick glance once you have em down.
drowninginristretto2 points2y ago
And the mods are always in the same order… shots, syrup, milk, other, and the bev code… bliss
RICKYOURPOISIN6 points2y ago
Friendly reminder to y’all the drink codes literally pop up on the side of screen when you punch in orders it’s good to know for situations like this!

Stop I'm having flashbacks.

I've been working at a starbs in a retailer the past 2 yrs. Never have had a printer, we write the cups every day, always wish we had a printer tho
alerollerblades2 points2y ago
when i was trained i got handed like a stack of printer paper full of codes and memorized the basic ones but that was almost 3 years ago. the codes are so different now and no one learns them at my store
juju4831 points2y ago
I'm so sorry, that's the worst. I hated when that happened.

I would die if i had to do that when busy. Almost everyone on the night shift is a new employee except 3 people.
