why do people tolerate getting yelled at, threatened, assaulted, and disrespected for minimum wage? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I don't think it's by coincidence that most retail workers are female and so many people think it's okay to batter and threaten retail workers. Imagine going into a dental office or mechanic shop and destroying property while spitting on the workers. Have fun picking your teeth up off the ground!

Classism

but why do workers tolerate that and then praise starbucks? it's crazy. people in europe would laugh at you if you said your employer was amazing after getting hot coffee thrown on you and the person gets a free coupon.

I have no idea. The standards for treatment of service workers here is very low. People grow up being told these jobs are "transitional", or for deadbeats, even though they call us essential workers 🥴

that doesn't mean workers have to act like they are in love with sbux or that it's the best company ever. it's creepy and weird. people at UPS, amazon, stocking shelves, and working as janitors make more money, and you can bet your bottom dollar that if someone beat up a janitor the way some of these retail workers are getting beaten up, hands would be thrown and charges would be pressed. every week I read about abuse towards workers. where is the line? is there a line at all, or can someone walk in and shoot a sbux worker? I mean, really?

It’s A cult. This is literally the only explanation I can think of. It’s more prevalent in some districts/regions than others. Group think and scary intimidation. The balance between “we are a family” and “you are easily replaced. You should appreciate that we even gave you a chance”

Yess most of my coworkers haven't drank the koolaid and are there for the benefits, but I have worked with people who have and I truly don't get it either.

Because capitalism creates conditions that force people to accept this kind of treatment.

editing to add: as far as people still praising their employer even after all this shit, I honestly think it's denial as a coping mechanism because it's easier to try and say that "Oh but free coffee and one free food item makes up for all the physical, verbal , and emotional abuse" than it is to accept the fact that we're living in a hellscape that priorities the ever-increasing profits of billionaires over the human lives of laborers.

Many people don't have a choice and are bound to Starbucks by ASU or health benefits, since Starbucks is one of very very very few places that offer both benefits. ASU is a great way to get a degree without paying massively out of pocket, and the health benefits are... surprisingly ok.

Also, for folks in certain areas, Starbucks might actually be the highest-paying accessible employment option. For places that are more rural, and employees who lack a means of transportation, Starbucks may be the best option.

It honestly doesn't happen that much at my store. It's up to the baristas here when to kick someone out, and we don't take a lot of shit, so that might have something to do with it.
