STRIKE/ CALL OUT- SATURDAY MAY 22nd (i.redd.it)
submitted by [deleted]
[deleted]
SnooDonuts3398 195 points 2y ago
Saturday is my day off, but I got your back!
Lilium816 186 points 2y ago
I'm going to shed some light on this real quick.

These mass callouts/strikes are only effective if a **large sum** of us are able to organize it and agree to it.

If only some ~200 of you (based on up votes on this post) are participating, you're only going to hurt your fellow partners with more shortages.
[deleted] [OP] 33 points 2y ago
It’s true that this will work best if lots of people could get involved. So it would be really great if we could all continue to share! And the whole point IS to have shortages. Customers will get their drinks slower and Starbucks will lose some money.. boohoo. Not encouraging anyone to work any harder themselves if there are less people. Do what you can and clock out at the end of your shift.
Lilium816 68 points 2y ago
Yeah you see but I'm a shift. I don't get to leave when the clock strikes a certain hour. I can only leave my close when my close is done, and if I'm down people that's going to take extra work from me and my partners.
[deleted] [OP] 29 points 2y ago
Ultimately you are scheduled until a certain time. If you don’t have enough time to get things done, that’s a scheduling problem. You absolutely CAN leave but seem to feel an obligation to doing things the right way for Starbucks which is really what they want. If things fall behind again that’s Starbucks own doing. Not yours. I’m sorry you feel this way though.
Lilium816 53 points 2y ago
The write up I received for trying to enact this would like to formally disagree with you.
chinfox 39 points 2y ago
this take is tone deaf. shifts are expected to fulfill their responsibilities, if that requires staying past a certain time then that is expected (to fulfill those responsibilities) and SSV’s are absolutely put to blame for the inevitable shitshow that comes from a mass call out, which would require us to stay past our scheduled time (or lose our means of income). as a barista, sure, nobody’s asking y’all to give a shit. but it’s pretty shitty to have zero empathy for the people in just about the same situation who have to deal with the fallout of these actions
Kitten_Monger127 2 points 2y ago
You should be striking too
Lilium816 5 points 2y ago
No thanks. I'll keep my 401k, stocks, my ASU reimbursement and my health insurance (type 1 diabetic).

I have nothing to gain by participating in such shenanigans and everything to lose.
damn_ass_rock_ 9 points 2y ago
I completely agree I literally just picked up a shift on saturday and I'm still gonna show up cause itll just screw over my coworkers and we're in the cornell college town and its exams week so I know we'll be super fucked anyway also not to mention i need the hours as many of us probably do
sleepythyme07 109 points 2y ago
I appreciate that some partners are frustrated by this change, but I also want anyone who’s thinking about participating to think carefully. This is not a well organized, widespread plan. If you call out, will you be honest about the reason why? If you aren’t, then the “point” of the exercise gets lost. If you are honest, then your job is at risk. Everyone has the freedom to make their own choices, but I don’t see how this will benefit anyone; it’s not going to accomplish what you want it to, and it’ll only make life harder for others and potentially yourself.
rio8envy7 8 points 2y ago
Facts.
[deleted] [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I don’t necessarily agree that it will be pointless if we all lie though. Starbucks corporate is much smarter than we want to think and will likely put two and two together. If we all lie about why we called out they can’t necessarily pinpoint who did call out for what to fire which keeps us safer.. But if we don’t put some pressure on their pockets to try and change this now, more people’s health and safety will be at risk.
rio8envy7 22 points 2y ago
This won’t do anything. The only people who’ll know is the partners who are on Reddit.
Ashamed_Equal 1 points 2y ago
Then tell the people at your store. Print it out, and put them in places where the cameras can’t see
rio8envy7 12 points 2y ago
I see no point in this. We all knew this was coming the second the vaccines rolled out and became available. We complained when the pandemic stared because we couldn’t go places or do anything and now were complaining because the world is trying to go back to some sense of normal. There’s no pleasing anyone. People want their lives back. I’d love to not work with a mask nor am I thrilled about it but I don’t see how this is going to do anything productive. Corporate won’t care if we call out.
Lilium816 7 points 2y ago
Ah yes, lie about your call out to build mistrust within your store and hurt those that legitimately call out.

Nothing about this ends in a positive.
poungie321 6 points 2y ago
I agree. I posted the other day asking why don’t we just strike already. But I also don’t think it would make a huge difference to corporate unless a lot of stores do it. I asked all my partners and no one is willing to do it because they need the money. It just sucks.
You can call 1-800-STARBUC and tell them you’re a partner and complain about the mask policy. I did a couple of days ago. Prolly won’t do anything but it’s better than nothing :/
Agreeable_Tea3344 108 points 2y ago
😂😂😂 I cant afford not to work sorry!
[deleted] [OP] 61 points 2y ago
that’s perfectly understandable!! the sooner we can get a union hopefully we could change that..
Sauceyd0ugh 56 points 2y ago
Careful with where you say the U word, I’ve heard that the siren sends PI’s after partners who use the U word.
ryzzostar 31 points 2y ago
I hope they send a PI after me. I really do.
theLegendairy1 11 points 2y ago
I’m curious, what could former partners and customers do to help form a union?
ryzzostar 10 points 2y ago
Unfortunately I'm not in a union state...but I'd join if there was a union.
crack-wolf 3 points 2y ago
i’ve been trying to organize my store to join the IWW but it’s been hard getting everyone together to talk about it with block scheduling. we NEED change NOW
noob_trees 2 points 2y ago
You realize that stuff that isn't more widespread will be hurting partners like this one more than sbux?
New-Cartoonist-3140 2 points 2y ago
Do you have sick hours
sadilg 94 points 2y ago
I would but I work in a Safeway Starbucks, and Safeway doesn’t care at all about anyone’s safety
srowland1110 170 points 2y ago
What a Safeway of thinking
[deleted] [OP] 48 points 2y ago
Take my angry updoot
srowland1110 15 points 2y ago
Take my thank you updoot
Razza_ma_tazza 17 points 2y ago
Safeway Starbucks here too!! Union reps are your best friend. Also, just call out. You know everyone does it way too often.
apartment_town 9 points 2y ago
Safeway Starbucks as well, also my cousin is a union rep and is always eager to protect the workers of our store. The union will always be your best friend in case like this.
rio8envy7 -25 points 2y ago
Unions will screw you over.
emilialunaxo 14 points 2y ago
Isn’t Safeway unionized? Talk to your union rep!
srowland1110 7 points 2y ago
Also, thanks for all the upvotes! I got more upvotes then what starbucks pays me! Lol
LatteMaster 88 points 2y ago
Tip: Don’t use an account with your real name to post stuff like this, if I can find an instagram with the same name and the same post pinned, so can corporate. Hopefully they have mercy and don’t straight up fire you.
cringeqween13 49 points 2y ago
conniedew 48 points 2y ago
Is there a real effort to unionize? Is this organized nationwide or just something thrown together and posted to social media?
[deleted] [OP] 20 points 2y ago
there have been many efforts to unionize but once corporate catches wind of anything they come in to shut it down/ fire people similarly to amazon
cryptorchild7 18 points 2y ago
Turn over is too high to actually organize a union
Lilium816 18 points 2y ago
It's basically just a meme at this point.
HengroenAndLlamrei 48 points 2y ago
Sorry OP, now you see why the people at the top just keep winning. The people at the bottom can’t get organized/won’t make short term sacrifices for long term benefits. And of course, the raised peg gets hammered down.
bbleinbach 9 points 2y ago
Wish we had a union
LackOfColor_ 40 points 2y ago
We still have to wear our masks. I think there's only 2 baristas in my store that haven't got a vaccine. There's still a local mandatory mask mandate for another week where im at.

You need to realize that we are not the only company that is lifting the mandate.

You can still choose to wear a mask. Are you vaccinated? Good! What are you worried about.
Are you or a fellow barista not? Make an appointment! Wash your hands, breathe.

The guards are still up at the register.

How is this any worse than having people dine in without masks?

I think starbucks has made a lot of questionable decisions over the years that I've been there, but through the pandemic, they have done some good in retrospect. They are following the cdc, as they have the entire time.

No one likes change, especially in such a stressful and scary time, but come on.. a strike/mass call out? Grow up.... this company has plenty of other reasons you could be arranging that.
amalia13lightning 8 points 2y ago
Wearing a mask is not a method that protects the wearer. Not everyone can be vaccinated, and some of us live with those people. I may be vaccinated, but I am still able to transmit the disease. Customers may not be vaccinated, and still walk in, order, and sit with no mask. Tell me again why I should not be worried.

The CDC says vaccinated individuals may stop wearing masks, at a time when most Americans are not vaccinated. If you truly believe that this will not end poorly, you are blind.
LackOfColor_ 2 points 2y ago
I understand how masks work and that they don't protect the person wearing them. If you're living with people that can't be vaccinated, perhaps such an involved job with the general public is not the best bet for you.

This country is an embarrassing example of how the pandemic was handled, unfortunately the anti Vax and anti mask citizens have the upper hand because they use fear based tactics as to reasoning why they don't need to follow the rules.

That being said, there's going to be people that will lie about their status just because they're so eager to return to normal. It's inevitable judging how they've handled it for the last year.

oldmansbelt -5 points 2y ago
Ohhh, so you mean safety in a way as it only applies to customers...

Your 2 faced entitlement is showing Karen.
LackOfColor_ -5 points 2y ago
I dont mean that. I call police often and trespass customers that don't comply in order to keep my baristas safe.
oldmansbelt 3 points 2y ago
What are you worried about?

My kids.
[deleted] [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I agree there will come a time when the masks will come off and don’t have any issue with that. I do have an issue with the fact that this is extremely premature and is only at the benefit of corporate making money off of our backs. Again more than 50% of people are NOT vaccinated and access to vaccination looks different everywhere. There are many who cannot get vaccination and we are not even close to “herd immunization”. I agree starbucks has been slightly more on top of the outbreak at the start but that is more so due to them not wanting bad press. Starbucks does a great job of doing just enough to not get bad press while still keeping its workers underpaid and overworked.
LackOfColor_ 6 points 2y ago
It does look different everywhere, and there are people who are already compromised that can't be vaccinated, I get it. But if you think starbucks is the only company that does this, you're absolutely mistaken.
Raspberry_Just 0 points 2y ago
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LackOfColor_ 6 points 2y ago
I have been lucky enough to keep my job, get a raise, pay my bills, and get paid to have the vaccine. Not every American can say that. If you are this scared, take a leave of absence. Get another job instead of making it worse on the people that are still showing up, by understaffed us even more.

Y'all are so angry and ungrateful sometimes, you don't get how it affects those around you that are happy to be working at all.
medusas-garden 5 points 2y ago
Yeah, a lot of the issues I have with Starbucks are more of an issue I have with living in a capitalist country in general and I will find these same issues wherever I go. At the very least with Starbucks I have good benefits and even though I do think we’re very underpaid that is, again, a widespread problem that doesn’t only occur with Starbucks
LackOfColor_ 3 points 2y ago
Thats the main point I'm trying to make in the OP. This is not only a starbucks thing. They're a corporation for F sake, of course they're going to go after what makes them money.
dazedandconfusedhere -2 points 2y ago
Too bad they’ve decided to take away the COVID leave of absence and require partners on it to come back now
LackOfColor_ 3 points 2y ago
Yes, that's BS for partners that feel unsafe in this time, however you can still apply for a personal LOA.
dodofishman -2 points 2y ago
I don't realize how you can't understand how this isn't because of lazy partners or something as ridiculous as that.

It's corporate exploitation. Maybe instead of living in mansions and buying yachts, corporate could value us.
baristaabitchh 37 points 2y ago
I feel like this’ll just fuck over the partners who choose to work that day.
amuhh 18 points 2y ago
yuuuup, especially because i doubt this notice will get anywhere
RetroNotRetro 27 points 2y ago
Funnily enough, everything is still the same in my town. Masks required, all of the tables are off limits, and the store could be spontaneously closed tomorrow, just like the end of 2020

Even funnier is that my town is definitely one where the majority of people would prefer not to wear a mask, so the lack of a policy change here is surprising.
catbatparty 24 points 2y ago
Saturday is my day off, but I'm with you in spirit.
Momofbartleby 23 points 2y ago
Are we making any demands? A strike will be virtually useless unless we have a set of demands written and communicated to the company. Are we asking for $15 an hour? A change to the new mask policy? If we're going to organize we have to be organized.
navkabar 20 points 2y ago
this is so naive it's insane
apracticalman 19 points 2y ago
Not that it's not frustrating, but I honestly think Starbucks made the right call given the circumstances. I'm pissed at the CDC guidance, not the policy of making masks optional. Imagine if in the light of the CDC update Starbucks kept the mask policy in place. We got a taste of it this weekend and it wasn't fun. People were still coming in without masks and getting even more indignant about it than they were before. Multiple times myself or my shift complement had to confront customers about it, and while nobody got aggressive it was certainly only a matter of time until somebody did. I don't want to have to spend my energy for the day policing people who aren't going to listen to me anyway and potentially risking a physical altercation. And to be clear again I do think this was wildly premature and is going to result in another spike in cases in the coming weeks, but I feel that the CDC failed us here more than Starbucks did. The reality is that a lot of people are going to stop wearing masks regardless of what individual businesses decide to do, so the best we can really do at this point is continuing to take measures to protect ourselves. I'd love a union for a million other reasons, but a poorly organized callout day isn't a strike, it won't change anyone's mind on this particular topic, and it's only going to hurt baristas who work that day, not the company as a whole.
Anxious_Database 16 points 2y ago
Honestly I’m happy about the policy change. I’m sick of being the mask police and I’d love to be able to sit in the cafe again. Hopefully they will allow vaccinated partners to stop wearing masks at some point soon too.
springolives 16 points 2y ago
Damn i’m already off saturday ! supporting y’all though
EncouragementRobot 14 points 2y ago
Happy Cake Day springolives! Forget about the past, you can’t change it. Forget about the future, you can’t predict it. Forget about the present, I didn’t get you one.
ericcs12 15 points 2y ago
I’m just saying, I get the frustration and all that but this is just going to turn into a few people calling out and then as a shift I’m going to be screwed on my Saturday shift
drinkliquidclocks 13 points 2y ago
Are there any stores in America who HAVENT changed their mask policy in accordance with the CDC recommendations? Like, I support your strike, but isn't it the same as EVERY other restaurant/store? I haven't been to one store that hasn't taken down their mask signs
[deleted] [OP] 3 points 2y ago
There are stores that haven’t changed their policy. And the other stores who have changed their policy have workers fighting back as well. Just because ‘everyone is doing it’ doesn’t mean we should give up. It means all workers need to continue organizing and fighting together for upward mobility and power
drinkliquidclocks 3 points 2y ago
I mean I'm with you, it just seems pointless here. Maybe your state is different from mine.
Ghost_girl_xx 2 points 2y ago
I work in a chain restaurant rn and our mask policy hasn’t changed at all however I’m on the west coast so that might be part of it
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 2y ago
I'm from Iowa, even before they changed the mask mandate customers didn't wear them and we weren't allowed to enforce it :/ I work at a licensed store, though. People are awful
The_Septic_Shock 2 points 2y ago
Target, but they don't enforce it, so its like it doesn't exist
Kmsss 11 points 2y ago
I’m sorry, but I feel like listening to the cdc on this one was the right move. And they didn’t give us long, but they did tell us.
venturealoha 10 points 2y ago
Nah.
cyan_reynolds 9 points 2y ago
While a mass call-out is a good idea in theory, you would need to get at least a couple hundred thousand partners to join in order to make any real difference beyond fucking over your coworkers for a day.
StarbzBoi -8 points 2y ago
Or just call out with positive covid results and shut down stores left and right and get other partners out of work who want to as well. Partners that can’t/won’t isolate can just show their proof of vax and work
cyan_reynolds 6 points 2y ago
You can't just call out claiming you have covid, you have to show them proof. Also, that would completely negate the entre point of the walk-out. The whole purpose is to be direct about why we're doing it - to be a protest.

Also, it still would have to be a significant protein of the entire company.
StarbzBoi -6 points 2y ago
You don’t need to show any proof of anything. Have to make them lose significant profits
cyan_reynolds 5 points 2y ago
Yes, you do have to show proof. You have to have seen a doctor, or gotten a positive covid test. And you're still ignoring my original point, you would have to get at least a couple hundred thousand people to call out to make any difference at all, they don't care about a couple stores getting shut down, that happens all the time.
QueenOfTypos337 9 points 2y ago
i feel like yall would need more than a couple days to really get this going, plus yall know starbucks isnt gonna listen to us. they dont actually give a shit (saying this as a partner)
[deleted] [OP] 0 points 2y ago
Agreed starbucks does not care about us and we see that here in the change in policy. Doing what we can and trying to start somewhere..
okbutwhatsize 9 points 2y ago
I’m just curious.... why not find another place to work if you hate this company so much 👀
ajd0224 -1 points 2y ago
They don’t wanna have that talk lol national shortage of labor and people act like this is the only job in the world, they just want something for nothing, i bet they gladly took every single check during covid and didn’t have to work, but how quickly we forget
darksideofthem00n 8 points 2y ago
This will get you nowhere but job abandonment.
bryandzoo 8 points 2y ago
Good luck with that...I’m just gonna continue to work and keep my job. I enjoy my job and my store....but good luck
radioactive_princess 7 points 2y ago
Lol. Have fun getting fired
Few_Mix_7941 7 points 2y ago
I’m genuinely curious (please someone explain) why the mask mandate being lifted is a danger. You work in the food industry... the vaccine has been available for long enough to be fully vaccinated. If the cdc says it’s okay what’s the deal? If you don’t want to get vaccinated work somewhere where you’re not at risk. Life has to move on. ( I say this as an extremely pro-mask, covid cautious person.)

my kroger starbucks would absolutely fire me if it weren’t already my day off
raedlt 1 points 2y ago
they lifted the mask mandate today in my store
ajd0224 5 points 2y ago
So instead the store managers will have to stress and figure out what to do with their store and coverage AND have to worry about their own safety, seems very selfish and irresponsible to me,

On Saturday I’ll be getting paid for the job i signed up to do , If you don’t agree with Starbucks values than go work somewhere else, there’s tons of places hiring

Some stores have already done call out strikes this week. I've already got the day off, but solidarity and support! Everything from the speed of change to the way we're being spoken down to by people who are working from home is unacceptable.
dazedandconfusedhere 4 points 2y ago
I support this but I need my maternity leave hours 🥲 plus none of my store uses Reddit or Facebook to see this, so the only people this would hurt would be my team
sheep_heavenly 1 points 2y ago
Generally when you organize a strike, the idea is that participants also spread the word, either verbally or by leaving handouts visible in common areas.
[deleted] [OP] 3 points 2y ago
As a customer I support you 1000% and will boycott on Saturday!!
kxnkycxrly 3 points 2y ago
you got it. I’ll be at Dunkin that day 💛 I’ll spread the word to my Cambridge peeps

junglejims4322 3 points 2y ago
Okay wait what’s the new mask policy? I haven’t been to work in like a week
madsisdumb 2 points 2y ago
Customers don’t need masks in the store anymore if your state allows it
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago
[deleted]
HollowRibcage 2 points 2y ago
I didn’t see this till about six hours after I got off of work and told my shift I wouldn’t be there for this Saturday. I had no idea about the call out but I needed off because saturdays are trash where I work and frankly it’s draining and taking a mental toll. Customers get more rude. And I’m always working five positions at once through the week but saturdays I have to work those five positions and then some just to « run smoothly » or « get the drive times down »
Like. Suck my ass. I’m burnt out. And frankly so were all my partners who were a year + that mass quit my store and my manager who never hired anyone on since. Yay.
Kimmikkokat 2 points 2y ago
I'm off Saturday for a wedding. Was going to bring the bride and fellow bridesmaids Starbucks for breakfast. Guess we'll just have to have something else. Good luck guys!
Gameb0i6 2 points 2y ago
Not able to get vaccinated? How is that possible? Everyone can get vaccinated now.
marilynmansonsbitch 4 points 2y ago
Some people have adverse reactions to vaccines. Some people can’t get vaccines for health reasons. There are various reasons whh someone is unable to get the vaccine.
Gameb0i6 -2 points 2y ago
From what I was told ANYONE can get it. Yes there are some serious side effects. But it’s extremely rare. Everyone just needs to do their part and get it so we can go back to living normal lives again.
OneRoseDark 2 points 2y ago
Incorrect. One of my best friends is unable to be vaccinated because she's allergic to an ingredient common to ALL Covid vaccines currently available. Her doctor is keeping an eye out for a vaccine she may be able to take, but being vaccinated now would risk her suffering an allergic reaction that would trigger an asthma attack that would likely put her in the hospital if not worse. Not everyone can be vaccinated.
temporarynothings 2 points 2y ago
Exactly, you can be allergic to literally anything 💀 I don’t understand how people think it’s an “excuse” to not get vaccinated
ryjectionissues 2 points 2y ago
OP - you should share this to the FB barista pages because there’s a lot more people and a bigger audience. :-)
