Cops Were Called (add yours below!) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by linipanini
A little long, but worth the read!!! Today I had a lady get upset about the amount of mango dragonfruit pieces in her drink. She said she had asked for extra, and I said there were extra, to which she said “fuck you,” threw the drinks at her passenger, and drove off. A few cars later, I answer the speaker box, and it’s her again, yelling “make me another refresher but with more pieces this time!!!!!” I asked her to calm down please, and she said “I am being fucking calm!!!” I asked her not to swear at me and to calm down and respect me, and she said “fucking respect me and make my fucking drink right!!!” I once again re-iterated to please calm down and not swear or I would refuse her service, and she screamed “fuck you!! You can’t do that!!” At this my shift got on and told her to leave because she was swearing and screaming at me, and she said “I never swore at you!” Then her male passenger said “ok I will! Fuck you!!” I told them to leave, and they then said they were going to hold up the drive through until they got a new drink. They yelled at the car behind them “might as well leave cause we’re gonna be here all fucking day!!” In the background, my manager was being informed, and so we served the cars before them, and then I locked the drive through window because the male passenger was getting out and we are an all-female staff. We called the non-emergency line and the cops came. From the beginning of the interaction to the cops showing up, it was 15 minutes of hell with them. As soon as they saw the cops she tried to take off, but the cops blocked the end of the drive through and got them. It looked like the driver ended up being under the influence but because of stupid COVID rules, they just had the passenger become the driver. I was shaking until the end of my shift, and pretty much was disassociating because I have PTSD from other mental health problems. What’s your favorite “we had to call the cops” moment???
RistrettoIsBae 46 points 2y ago
You know what’s shocking? The fact that Starbucks has the whole thing on video surveillance and yet they didn’t lock *her* up for a DUI and/or the police didn’t get any statements from the people who called 911.

I don’t know how many Starbucks situation’s would be solved so easily by saying “maybe we should look at the surveillance footage to figure this out before we jump to conclusions” 🤷🏻‍♀️ Including the police.

It should’ve been a disorderly conduct charge.
linipanini [OP] 21 points 2y ago
Omg yes!!! They were both AWFUL to me, and I know that if I would have opened the window they would have thrown the drinks at me or he would have actually tried to do something to harm me. All over inclusions.
RistrettoIsBae 6 points 2y ago
I understand. Provide the surveillance footage of the woman in the drivers seat to the police so they can refile the proper charges. I am sorry this happened to you.
linipanini [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Thank you. I will definitely try!!!

One day these kids come in after school (we weren't *that* close to a HS, so we didn't get a lot of kids in the PM), I have one person on break and I'm doing dishes in the back, so there's only 1 person on the floor on register and bar. She takes their order (all fraps, shocker) and as soon as she takes her eyes off the floor, the kids grab the tip jars and book it.

Here's the thing though, the only way out of the parking lot is onto a VERY busy street that's bumper-to-bumper during commuter hours, eg, when this story takes place. They're sitting in the car waiting to turn out and I have enough time to get at the open the door and ask for the jars back. These kids were so scared they gave it back, began apologizing , the girl in the back starts crying. Meanwhile the cops are on the phone but I can't really hold a car back, and by the time the cops show up, they're gone.

So while the cops are talking to me and grabbing the video, the kids are down the street at the Peet's doing the same thing. The cops leave and get there in time and arrest the kids.

Cops were supposed to tell us ended up happening as far as punishment, but they never did.

The fact that you were able to walk out and knock on their window and THEN they caught them is a small cosmic smile on you!! I hope if anything they were scared shitless enough to not do stuff like that again.
rudebii 16 points 2y ago
i didn't even knock, I just grabbed the door handle and opened the door. (Lock your car doors people!)

no joke, it was the WORST time of day for a heist. i would see customers wait over 5 minutes to merge onto the blvd.
linipanini [OP] 8 points 2y ago
You are my hero!!! I would have just written their license plate number down but maybe I would have done what you did if I knew it was high schoolers. But probably not cause I’m a weenie 😂
martinifather 25 points 2y ago
we called the cops on a crazy lady who would only speak to baristas that were black women. if our staff had no black women that night she would order like 8 venti ice waters and 4 venti hot waters and some type of stupid shaker drink that every time she would watch us put it in the shaker and then say she didn’t want it to touch the shaker. If she asked for a straw and I put it on the counter she would refuse to touch it (we went thru like 5 straws once because she wouldn’t say why she wouldn’t take them) and once even asked to have my coworker help take her drinks to her car (I didn’t let him, he only held the door and she let it slam on him). There was one night our SSV who was a black woman was on her lunch so I was dealing with her at the window. She said her croissant she ordered hours before was cold now and she wanted another one. I told her there was nothing we could do because she didn’t catch us when she got it and she yelled at me and said your manager can speak to me and when I said my shift is not available right now she just yelled more. My SM only called the cops after like a week of her harassing us every day and night once she was harassing him personally. She was 86’d I think
linipanini [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Holy shit, that’s awful. She really just was intentionally being rude to y’all.

My *favourite* moment, we didn't even call the cops... they just happened to walk into the store as it was happening. Girl comes in with a tall dude, both have chronic RBF but something was off about her. She orders a grande caramel macchiato with 9 splendas. While I'm making it, I notice she's hanging around RTD&E. This is where the first police officer walks in.

When I hand her the drink, she comes down to the handoff plane and asks where her other two drinks are. I tell her she only ordered one, and we bicker. She... I believe that was when she wandered off to the bathroom, and two more police officers wander in for a late night coffee.

We explained to them what was going on and why we were all super uncomfortable, and a former employee (left Starbucks to be a club bouncer) walks in. She volunteers to go back to the bathroom to check on the customer... and when she comes back, she said it smells like the customer was smoking up in one of the stalls.

When the customer comes out, she's immediately surrounded by the 3 police officers, who guide her calmly to a table... eventually she is told to empty her pockets/purse, and she ends up pulling out two paninis and a fucking protein box! Cops question the dude she walked in with, and he can't decide if he's her cousin or her husband, lots of weird stuff from both of them.

Never saw her again, but Cousin Husband came by our store on his own a month or two later. He tried to pull the same stunt, minus the shoplifting. Ordered one drink, tried to insist at the handoff plane that he actually ordered four, said he should get all four for free since *we* made a mistake (LOL). I had to tell him that if he didn't leave, we would need to call the police for trespassing, and he wouldn't be getting any drinks at all.

Ended up leaving on his own, of course with lots of yelling, and I never saw him again.
robinbrauer22 14 points 2y ago
I’m always suspect of anyone who orders Splenda or sweetener with drinks that have syrup. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️😂
linipanini [OP] 2 points 2y ago
LOL YES
linipanini [OP] 12 points 2y ago
Omg TWO paninis 😂😂😂
torpac00 1 points 2y ago
cousin husband 😂😂
StormTheParade 1 points 2y ago
That was actually my nickname for him after the first encounter! We never actually knew who he was to her. I'm sure he was a friend or her plug or something, but the truth is lost to time
meiso 1 points 2y ago
where was this?
StormTheParade 1 points 2y ago
A store in the DFW area
MochiMasu 19 points 2y ago
Had to call the cops because homless guy kept loittering and leaving swastikas around the store. Manger saw him and enformed he wasn't welcome anymore for x y x reasons. Proceeds to tell the manger "Fuck offf, suck my dick." Shortly the cops were called. Haven't seen him sense.
linipanini [OP] 8 points 2y ago
Well at least he hasn’t come back? That sounds awful tho. Were you able to get the swastikas off of whatever he marked??
MochiMasu 6 points 2y ago
Luckily our building it was a simple paint Job! I have tons more weird stories for sure and it's only been 6 months lol.
linipanini [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Omg yes it’s only 3 for me but it’s been wild. I think I said somewhere else that this Starbucks was built in a sketch area (and right next to a creepy ass alley, so it’s the drive through window, then the drive through, and then the alley...some weird people walk through that alley) and we’ve had known traffickers come in and try to solicit our female staff, a lady flip out at me over not giving her a cupholder and her drinks spilling once she left the drive through (even tho she only asked for one once she had all 3 drinks in her possession), a guy on a bike (without a seat on it, but had the seat in a plastic bag??) come in and just start ranting about the most random shit (definitely high and severely mentally ill) but then coming back the next day and destroying the beans/cup display... it’s always something!!!
MochiMasu 3 points 2y ago
Cheers to have a starbucks in the sketch area, I wish you the best of luck and no random drunk/high homless people disrupting
deliriux 18 points 2y ago
While employed with starbucks the only things I didn't have to call for were abduction, fire and murder. Everything else imaginable the emergency services are available for I have seen. Except the car driving through the store, that happened after I left.
linipanini [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Lol yeah that sounds about right. When I found out my store was being built where it was I internally groaned and knew stuff like this was inevitable.
sarkici17 17 points 2y ago
I realized I forgot to check bathrooms about 15 min after we closed. I went in to the mens room and the stall door was locked. I loudly stated that we were closed, and in response I heard this horrifying grunt noise. I can't really describe it, but it was like this 'huuuuuuuhhhh' growl. We called the cops and it turned out to be some mentally ill guy. The police and paramedics came and brought him out strapped up in a wheelchair. As he left, he just kept repeating 'phone charger' over and over in this creepy tone. We had to stay an hour and a half after close.
linipanini [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Omg 😳
niizhonii 16 points 2y ago
I had a car catch fire in the drive thru and we closed early, not necessarily the cops but, interesting none the less
linipanini [OP] 1 points 2y ago
OMG THATS BAD
Confussledabit 14 points 2y ago
We had a this homeless guy who would hang out in our lobby who we called "Afro Guy". He would always just sit at a table and sorta keep to himself. I worked the busy shift, so I never paid him much mind. Anyway, he slowly starts getting more and more belligerent: panhandling aggressively in the store, tell managers to fuck themselves, one time he knocked over a chair and said "this is my store." Anyway, one day he walks in and just starts wrecking the place. Kicking chairs, grabbing cans out of the RTD and throwing them at us. Literally, a can flew past my head. He leaves, we call the cops, and im freaking out. Then, before they arrive, HE COMES BACK AND STARTS BREAKING MORE STUFF! We hid in the back, but there was nothing stopping him from just walking back there. I ran home and this was a major factor in me quitting a few months later.
linipanini [OP] 2 points 2y ago
It makes sense why you would quit, that’s AWFUL.
LadyBearJenna 11 points 2y ago
Smelly homeless sleeping in our lobby, junkie grabbed a delonghi espresso machine and ran out the door at close while I was covering floor at another store, drunk driver at 5am in our drive thru who went up over the curb upon driving off, fights, stolen credit cards, ... those are the ones I can remember.

I work at the store with the highest incidents reports in my district.

I've called the cops on masturbators, heroin users passed out in our bathroom, trespassing dumpster poopers, and a guy who ripped his shirt off in the lobby spun it around his head and screamed "WOOOOOOOO!" literally until the cops came and walked him out of the store. That one was nuts, it was like his brain's os crashed and only "spring break in Cancun.exe" was working.

My favorite was pretty early in my tenure, around five years ago. I was still relatively new, and this super botoxed woman demanded I ring her up for a cold brew. Stores in our district had it at the time. The Peet's down the street had it. We didn't. I'd never even heard of it, so of course being an idiot, I offered to pour her hot "brewed" coffee, and add ice to it to make it "cold", 'cuz she obviously wasn't having iced coffee. She started screaming at me. It's 7:30am, my shift started at 7:15, there's a line out the door, and this woman is absolutely shrieking vitriol of the most intense kind. Total flashbacks to my trauma, me a 6'3" 250 lbs. dude just starts balling. Tears streaming from my face, trying to calm her, offering her anything for her to stop shouting at me.

My manager comes out of the back. Nicest guy I've worked with at 'bucks. Never had a schedule done in time, but always had your back kinda guy. He's 6'6" and walks up using his dad voice to just "you're 86'd. Leave immediately" this lady. She takes a breath and starts screaming at him, about starbucks being full of "f@ggots who can't handle life". He doesn't hesitate for a moment, just wraps me in a gentle hug and kisses me on the cheek, all while looking deeply into her eyes. We're both straight dudes. She makes a noise like a cat throwing up and RUNS out of the store like she was gana "catch the gay". The line and lobby, full of innocent onlookers, gives him a standing ovation.. He calls the cops, they interview us, apparently she does this often and has been banned from Peets. They later arrest her for hate crimes, I heared.

Later I asked my manager why he kissed me so tenderly. "I just wanted to shock that bitch as much as possible so she'd gtfo. Then he boops me on the nose and says "plus, you deserve it. No homo." True G.O.A.T.
linipanini [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Lol also we had the WOOOOOOO guy stand on the corner of our store’s street today and take his shirt off and his hips did NOT lie and it was entertaining, he would cheer on anyone who pulled up to our drive though. He was very intoxicated 😂
linipanini [OP] 2 points 2y ago
That boss sounds incredible 🥺🥺
Time_Ad6816 4 points 2y ago
one time a crazy guy came in and got mad bc we couldn’t use his panera card to pay for his order🙄 then he tried to punch our asm (now our sm) in the face
linipanini [OP] 1 points 2y ago

The year before last on Christmas Day I was on bar which was facing the lobby area - it was pretty busy and it was snowing outside so our lobby and drive thru were crazy full. Anyway, I live in Portland so we often had homeless people come in and hog the bathrooms or just ask for cups of hot/ice water and we were always polite and gave them what they’d ask for unless they were being disruptive for whatever reason. Well, maybe because of the season or the rush - im not sure - we had one of these people come in and after waiting probably just a few minutes after the cafe barista rung in their venti cup of 200 degree water they started to become really irate - like screaming at the top of their lungs that “someone better get their damn water,” and kept going on and on about how long it was taking and they needed it NOW and honestly some of it for me wasn’t totally coherent because of the headset but quickly a shift came over and asked them to calm down or they’d need to leave before handing them their hot water, saying it was really hot water so they provided a stopper and a sleeve. After a few seconds it seemed like this guy was trying to get the attention of the shift again saying they needed something else. Then, out of NOWHERE, this guy just for some reason decided to THROW THEIR VENTI CUP OF 200 DEGREE WATER ONTO THE LADY NEXT TO THEM!!! She screamed and we IMMEDIATELY attempted to make them leave the premises as another barista called the cops. This guy just would not leave - kept yelling profanity and SOMEHOW my shift was able to get this guy outside the doors and ended up locking them for everyone’s safety considering they had essentially just assaulted someone. I could hear them outside screaming and banging on the window to “let them back inside,” and demanding some other item (I think it was food they didn’t pay for) and right up until the police showed up they were right out there just causing a scene. They ended up taking off running through the parking lot and down the street - I honestly have no idea why that situation escalated as it did but it was insane to have a front row seat to a breakdown like that 😢
linipanini [OP] 1 points 2y ago
OH MY GOD THAT IS AWFUL
sydbey_ 2 points 2y ago
IT SUCKED
linipanini [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I bet!!! I would probably have burst into tears after that one was all over because actual harm was done to someone.
sydbey_ 3 points 2y ago
I just kept making drinks one after the other while everyone else was panicking because for some reason it’s easier for me to keep going and stay busy (especially since the situation was being handled), but I DID groan extra loud and begin to wonder why I moved to Portland of all places and why some people are the way that they are when others do nothing but try to help?? 🙄
meiso 2 points 2y ago
sounds like human garbage visited your store... what do you mean by COVID rules forced them to have passenger become driver? people can still be arrested for a DUI during COVID...
linipanini [OP] 1 points 2y ago
They can, but in our county at least they will call the jail and if they don’t have room due to social distancing in the cells, they won’t actually take them in.
neeto 2 points 2y ago
More OD’s/ppl passing out in locked bathrooms than I can count. A few times where people came in too high to do anything but drool and piss themselves. Once a woman had a full racist meltdown about black people and threatened to fight this little old lady. We had somebody steal an entire shelf of merchandise probably once a year. I’m at a new location now and we see crazy things less, but recently a man got caught in a drive by right outside so nowhere is safe apparently.
linipanini [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Omg noooooo that’s not great. I would feel very on edge being on drive-through if I knew that.
