Lazy openers. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Nigee_Ogee
Anyone else have extremely lazy opening shifts/baristas (or closers if that applies to you). The openers/morning crew at my store are incredibly lazy. There’s at least 10 of them in the morning compared to the closing shift which is usually about 4 of us. They never do the cold brew (they literally just have to add water to it), the store is always a mess when we get in, things aren’t always restocked, sink is clogged and filled all the way at the top, trashes not done, they don’t mark out what we have or don’t have or even tell us and sometimes even the shifts don’t do their jobs. I’m just a barista but I really wish I could write in that little book all the things they didn’t do. Just like they try to do to the closers/afternoon crew.

When you count all the tills, make all the toddies, rotate all the food, rotate all the fridges and freezers, restock all the back ups, restock all the cups and lids, run all the breaks, take out the trash, and the SSV you hand off the shift to complains about the dishes LMAO

Smh lmao

It’s not that hard. I’m a brand new shift, working mornings and closing. For mornings, just have a CS that actually knows what they are doing and how to do it. It makes the transition smoother and overall just better. For night shifts, just help out the morning by doing sanitizer and tea preps and just little things that help improve your store.
Huge_Crab_7425 3 points 2y ago
I’m glad some stores get a CS. I’m happy for y’all.
Politicalgeek03 1 points 2y ago
Talk to your manager. Y’all shouldn’t suffer. I’m sorry what y’all are going through but don’t blame it on the night vs morning crew. It’s likely your managers fault.
Huge_Crab_7425 3 points 2y ago
I didn’t lol
nickintheback08 27 points 2y ago
Damn I don’t even know what I would do with like 11 people on the floor.
MungotheSquirrel 33 points 2y ago
I once had to figure out how to run a 14-person play on a Saturday when our sister store (quarter mile away) was closed, so we absorbed a bunch of their people. Someone's whole position was washing dishes. Another person was the food runner. Not warmer. Runner. Someone else was warming, they were just grabbing unwarmed pastries and bringing the food to handoffs. It was its own version of a shitshow. Figuring out who got which breaks in what order was like being back in calculus class.
hecaete47 30 points 2y ago
Damn I would literally LOVE to just wash dishes all shift. I usually can't get away with doing dishes for long because CS is usually slammed, but today we were well staffed and breaks were out of the way so I just focused on dishes for literally half an hour and it was glorious.
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 11 points 2y ago
Lmao a runner. Omggg I would have loved to be the dish washer 😍
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 7 points 2y ago
Wild right? They have a person for every position in the store you can think of!
LatteMaster 15 points 2y ago
There is no way you have 10 openers, even the busiest store doesnt need 10 people at 4 am unless you are like a roastery? Im confused
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 8 points 2y ago
I wouldn’t lie about that sir or ma’am . It’s literally 10 people in the morning. It’s because my manager wants to keep our window times good because we are beating the other store lately.
_Pulltab_ 18 points 2y ago
There’s a difference between “openers” and people who work in the morning. We usually have a 7-9 person play (plus the shift) in the mornings but only 2 openers (3 if there’s an order) and I guarantee we need all of them. Today we had 10 on the floor and busted our asses for 5 hours straight. I’m sure the afternoon crew will come in and wonder what we’ve been doing but I guarantee we weren’t being lazy.
Nigee_Ogee [OP] -11 points 2y ago
.... okay Why are you telling me this like I was specifically talking about your store? 😂. I also said morning baristas, not just openers. The point is that there’s more than enough people to get things done if they really cared about that.
nonnaan 4 points 2y ago
Yeah my store is the same. We have like ~9 people in the morning and nothing gets done at all. Probably because my SM works in the morning so she properly staffs but not during nights lol.
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 0 points 2y ago
Right lol. It’s just insane how there’s so many people but things still don’t get done. Like yeah I’m sure it’s busy in the mornings but you have more than enough people and I feel like being a shift you need to have good time management skills and can get your shit done.

As an opener, I completely understand. As a barista it would be too crazy to try and get everything done. Peak is “2 hours” but that simply isn’t true. Since becoming a SSV I refuse to hand off a store like this. Sure, when you come in it might look a little crazy. But before any of my crew goes, we place the midday crew, and then we clean, restock, rotate, wipe down, take out trashes, do a trash run, dt spin, and all the dishes.

I used to be a closer at Panera so I know what it’s like coming into a dirty store and having to clean up after others. It’s annoying. I would hate to do that to the rest of my coworkers.

I’m sorry you have to deal with it /: maybe bring it up to your SSV? They can write it in the book that things are never being done and talk about it with your SM
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yeahh it’s highly annoying, problem is even when it’s brought up to the store manager she just says “what do you want me to do about it”, so 😭
jjoorrrdddaan 8 points 2y ago
have you tried working in the morning? it’s hell. haha
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I have and I agree it is very hard, but afternoons and nights are also extremely busy but we only have four people compared to their 10, we still get our stuff done, we even stay later on to make sure we have everything done for them. But as soon as 12 hits they all just leave the floor.
jjoorrrdddaan 11 points 2y ago
i mean i’ve worked in the service industry for years and the openers vs closers debate is a tale as old as time. openers complain about closers and closers complain about openers. haha
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yeah true
dazedandconfusedhere 8 points 2y ago
My store opens with 3 people and then does peak with 7-8

We really need to open with at least 4 to be able to get restocking done BEFORE peak hits, but they only schedule 4 when we have an order 🥲
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
You guys only open with three people?? That’s terrible! 🙃
dazedandconfusedhere 6 points 2y ago
Yep! A shift, and two baristas. One barista does the case, the other does teas and sets up bar
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Sounds like us at night lmao. Just a shift and two baristas. Are you able to get those tasks done before customers come usually?
dazedandconfusedhere 1 points 2y ago
Nope, we’re doing everything and taking orders/making drinks in the meantime
ayrihanae 4 points 2y ago
my store is lucky if we have more than two people opening
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
That’s crazy!
4filth 3 points 2y ago
My store opens with two people: one shift and one barista, and the closes are the same :(
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Smh they need to get it together in that storeeee!
289partnerofq 1 points 2y ago
We open with 2 people. I thought that was the norm at every store? 😂😂
juiceyluicy 5 points 2y ago
It goes both ways at my store. There usually isn’t enough people in the morning to do prepping. But the shifts are usually good at having people restock and tidy things in their last 15 minutes. (Or taking out trash, that kind of thing). But it is really frustrating (as someone who closes and opens) that SO much is expected of the 3 closers, yet the morning/mid people sometimes don’t even get tasks done (cleaning bathrooms for example) and still they’ll complain about like not having enough strawberry backups or something when they could just very easily make it themselves in the morning before peak.
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yesssss! I’m completely with you there!
baristaabitchh 5 points 2y ago
One thing I’ll note as an opening shift is that at my store we do 80% of our business in the morning. Hence why we have more baristas on staff and don’t have very many tasking duties.

With that said though, I’ll always make sure things are stocked and as clean as I could get things before I hand off the keys. It’s easy for us to ask a barista to do one small thing before they clock off like take out the trash or double check that milks/cups/lids are stocked. We tried doing cold brew in the AM but there’s just no good time for it so I’ll typically prep the toddy(s) so that they just need water for later on.

Sounds like you guys just need some better communication. Bring this up to your shift supervisors and they can talk about it in a shift meeting with the SM for some clarification on what needs to be done at which day part. Hope this helps (:
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Unfortunately this has been brought up several times to my store manager in the meetings and nothing is still done about it.. 😭😭 thank you for the advice though.
baristaabitchh 1 points 2y ago
Time for a transfer then? 😂
Tytanka 3 points 2y ago
It sounds like someone doesn't know how to run a proper CS cycle. If you have a dedicated partner on CS ( the shift *cough cough*) then stuff should be getting done.
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Ya I don’t think they know how to run it properly.
cringeqween13 3 points 2y ago
10 people scheduled? For mornings? All showing up? Dude we had 3 people at the end of morning shift yesterday (6 people were there through our official peak but we never actually slow down)
YellowSphinx 2 points 2y ago
I had a similar problem. But with my closers. Imagine if you will. Coming into work to open and the Starbucks is a Barren wasteland. mocha wasn’t made, they didn’t wipe down the counters and all the trashes are full. so you have to setup the store and put it back together while doing closing tasks. Every. Single. Day. I started off leaving notes of my grievances. Which eventually me just telling them off as soon as they came in. I shouldn’t have to clean up after you.
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Damn your closers sound like they really don’t care. I would tell them off too, you really shouldn’t have to clean up after them.
YellowSphinx 3 points 2y ago
They were very open about it too. they openly said to me “I love it when you work because I don’t have to do anything” I was furious and decided to go organize our supplies when the rush hit
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Do we have the same coworker? A coworker said the same thing to one of my shift leaders 😳. That is so rude to say like get your lazy asses up!
El_Gabe69-420 2 points 2y ago
My store's openers are pretty subpar. They make cold brews wrong, can't properly seal a keg, don't shake whips, don't make backups, don't stock fridges, and when they do restock anything they do it wrong. A closing shift has gone to mids and they said it's simply their attitude, they'd rather not work faster if it means they'd have to do more, and they whine and complain when they don't get off exactly when scheduled.

Meanwhile us closers are used to staying 15-45 minutes late, depending on how well they set us up at the handoff.

Nights ARE getting better with labor, but the (otherwise good) morning crew is riddled with bad eggs that simply make it unbearable.
Nigee_Ogee [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Smh geez that sounds worse than my store! I’m sorry about that!
El_Gabe69-420 1 points 2y ago
The floor that you walk in on sounds just as bad to be honest 😆 I'm sorry that we are both in the same boat. Night crew rules!! 💪
