tips on transitioning to SSV (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by amrdlt
hi friends, im a newly hired barista about 6 weeks in now. at my interview, my manager and i spoke about me moving up to SSV (i have prior experience but wanted to get the hang of the job first) and i figured it would take about 6 months (so i was thinking october) but i just spoke with him again yesterday and he was thinking to move me up by july. now i'm a bit nervous because i still feel like a fresh green bean and was wondering if y'all had any tips on questions i should be asking, things i should be paying attention to, etc. within the next month. thanks!

Having worked at the bux and being in management now I’d just say as a broad rule if you want to be in leadership do not become too friendly with most of the employees.
Friendly is great, friendships outside of work are fraught when you’re in a leadership role. I’ve learned this the hard way over a couple years at my current employment.

yeah, all my current coworkers know my prior experience/goals and ive just been talking to them to try and get to know them. i dont think im on friendship level yet so i know now to leave it at this level. i struggled with that at my last job where i got promoted because i wasnt expecting to and would always said i would never move up lol.

It’s the number one thing I wish someone had told me because it was a new store (big retail) and we were all completely new to the company for the most part and so I made friends with folks which was fine in the ‘we are on our best behavior’ stave and now that folks are comfortable after a few years, guess who doesn’t get listened to by half of their employees? It is a hole I am slowly and painfully clawing my way out of.

When I worked at bux our store manager was close friends with everyone, literally officiated my wedding to a fellow coworker, but the store was a shit show daily because her ‘friends’ did wtfever they wanted at work and she wasn’t tough enough to keep them in line.

hey there! I became a SSV the summer before holiday launch and the time that youll be promoting is right before holiday. I honestly say to wait til october or maybe even january when holiday is over. its a huge amnt of info thrown at you and I was so happy that I could accommodate a whole season before the craziness began

I literally had one day of training to be a SSV, and the next week I was the opening SSV Monday - Friday.....and wasn't even trained on how to order, had to learn from the SSV's at my store who stepped down.
