Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

An encounter I witnessed today (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by KRLovely1
Full disclosure, I am not a Starbucks barista. Just a fellow coffee lover that has had a recent obsession with Starbucks. I also love reading stories and experiences to know what helps and hurts you guys.

That being said, I know I've seen a few stories about customers asking for drinks to be changed or things added after receiving them (which I know I would hate if I worked any kind of food service). Kind of a health hazard and just cringy to me.

So here we go:

A middle aged woman had gotten her hot coffee. There were about 3 of us waiting on our mobile orders, no biggie. She takes the lid off, takes a sip, then turns around. (I think uh oh..) she walks back up to the bar and says "I'm sorry this just doesn't taste right to me. Could I maybe get another shot of espresso and some more heavy cream?" (I think, omg this lady is trying to get a free espresso shot. What a jerk, omg, can't believe the audacity.) So the barista (super nice btw), is a little hesitant but takes it back. Well this cup is still full so she says she can't add a shot, but that she can pour some out and add some more cream. The lady agrees. She pours a bit out, adds cream and hands it back. The lady leaves. (I'm thinking, whew can't wait to write this in the reddit page!) But then... The lady come BACK IN.

She walks back up to the bar and says "yeah it still doesn't taste right, I'm sorry I'm new to ordering from here" (well girlfriend you are breaking so many unspoken rules right now. I can't even) The barista takes it back, does something (idk what I couldn't hear). Hands it back. The lady take ANOTHER sip. Then just stands there. By this time there are 5 of us waiting on our mobile orders.

She tells the barista AGAIN, that it doesn't taste right.. like my guy what do you want her to do... the barista takes it, does something else to it and then hands it back.

The barista doesn't walk back to where she's standing. This lady then stands there for about 3 mins, sighs really loud, then goes to walk out, THROWS HER ENTIRE CUP OF HOT COFFEE IN THE TRASH, then leaves...

Here is my logic when I order from Starbucks. I don't always get the same thing. I like trying different flavors and such. First off, There have been times I wish I would've gotten more syrup or a different creamer, but I drink the dang coffee because it's $5!!!! Like the creamer would have to be sour for me to even THINK about asking for a change to my drink, and by then I'd ask to just order something else completely. Secondly, why did you throw the whole thing in the trash my guy.. like go pour it out in the parking lot or something.. just so rude for no reason.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the story from a customers POV. Sorry if I'm not technically allowed to post 💀. But keep up the good work everyone. I'm still learning what makes your job easier for you and the do's and dont's. You are all awesome and I hope you all have a great rest of the day!

I dunno seems strange that the barista didn’t just remake it the second time around she said it “didn’t taste right,” because especially with covid we don’t take drinks back in once they’re in a customers hands, but personally I would have just clarified the drink and remade it to avoid further disruption to the people like you waiting on their mobile orders

I'm not sure either. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I mean either way that lady just seemed like maybe she wasn’t sure what she wanted and sometimes there’s just no appeasing a customer like that 🤷‍♀️
KRLovely1 [OP] 8 points 2y ago
I agree. 'it doesn't taste right' doesn't give any clues as to what she actually wanted. Like ma'am its hot bean juice... It's going to taste a little weird 💀

Lol because after being handed back twice (or remade) it’s like ma’am are you sure you don’t want a refund because that’s just about the only option we’ve got left here i’m busy and I think you know that 😂

I'm happy to fix anyone's drink, I would hope the customer will enjoy their $6+ drink so I'll do what I can to make it right. I DO get annoyed when people are rude and pretend like it's my fault they don't know what they want...

Right I totally get it. The first time I feel like you get a pass. Something a little extra like creamer or sugar I feel like is an easy fix. But when you ask for another shot of espresso.. like girl that's $$$. But especially anything after that I'm like, come on dude 😂

But I don't like confrontation so I'd probably just chug the thing and go about my day 🤷🏽‍♀️ but that's 100% me and not everyone is a little wimp like me lol

Yeah, I was raised that if either somebody else pays, or if it's deemed expensive/or a treat, you *finish it.* The whole thing, even if you don't really like it because that's wasteful, and there's too much waste already. Example A, see above.

this is where I'de have remade it and ask her what was wrong.
