What to do when sm Denys availability change? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ajskdjurj
I came back from maternity leave about 3 months ago and was working 5 days about 35-40 hours. About a month ago I decided I wanted to work only 4 days because I wanted to spend time with my child my sm was giving me trouble but did it. Now I’m losing my babysitter and will only be able to work 2 days and a weekend. My manger denied my request and told me I need to keep my 4 days. I can’t tho because I have no babysitter except the 3 days I can work. What are my options?

If you WANT to be able to work 4 days you can look into the childcare benefit Starbucks offers. I’m not exactly sure what it is, but I know it exists. If you want to only work the 3 days though, you might have to try and transfer to another store that will accept the availability. Either that or it might mean you have to find a new job which would suck if you like this job :(

The childcare benefit is only for emergency care (like 20days or something)

It's also problematic because it just pays for care without promising to actually provide someone who meets your needs. It's a nice perk to help you pay someone you already rely on for care, but at least in my experience not that good at providing caregivers.

Honestly I wouldn’t even call it a perk - it’s only there to make people have fewer excuses to call out

Have a conversation with the SM and make it clear that the availability change is important, and not negotiable. You have a strong case to say you need consistent schedules at certain times for childcare.

In the partner guide it says managers can deny your availability and schedule you outside your availability and can terminate employment if you availability doesn't meet the store's needs. But I think most SMs would rather have you work 3 days a week instead of firing you for not wanting to work more hours.

I would hope they would let me transfer before firing me
