Is there a rule about demoting and immediately repromoting? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by softneedle
We had a shift promote a few months ago who wasn’t doing a good job. She has a good attitude and our SM clearly likes her, but the floor was falling apart on her watch. She had some stuff going on with her personal life and she ended up demoting back down to a barista. I ended up having to quarantine, and when I came back, she was back as a shift running the floor (poorly). My SM picks apart every shift I run and rarely gives me good feedback, but constantly wants me to support her and help her get better. Are shifts allowed to demote themselves only to change their mind a few weeks later, even if they’re not doing a good job? It just feels wrong to me, especially to see how much he coddles her and how mean he is to the rest of the shifts (who have been doing this for years). I’m trying to decide if I should go to PCC

Lowest conflict scenatio: any chance you could also help her improve? Is she coachable?

Higher conflict: I'd start by talking to my DM rather than corporate, which would forward it to them anyway. Have concrete examples, emphasize how it hurts customers as well as employees. If your DM blows you off, would a coworker be willing to call PCC so the DM ends up hearing g about it again from a second person with some higher up accountability?

I don't know if we have any specific policies about demotion and re-promotion time frames, but it seems to me that the actual problem is performance regardless of that.

Thank you for the advice! We have been trying to help her grow but something isn’t clicking and she’s been “practicing” running shifts basically since she got promoted. She’s very scatter brained and I think it’s just overall not a good fit but she’ll do whatever our SM asks and knows all the right things to say. It’s very frustrating! I’ll definitely talk to my DM

It's not usually a good idea to go over someone's head at work. It can lead to resentment, even if you're ultimately right. Bringing it up to the DM is the best option.

Thank you, I agree that I should go to my DM first. He knows my SM and how he can be, and I have a couple people in my Arsenal he can talk to if I need backing up. I get frustrated but ultimately I want a solution, not a fight
