I’m burning out :( (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MacaronJolly
We are severely understaffed, I’m the only SSV at our store, and I’m taking accelerated summer courses so I can graduate. Yet somehow I still feel guilty saying I can’t cover a call out from a borrowed SSV.

No purpose to this post other than an overworked SSV needing to let out a short rant. :(

You’re the only one?? :( omg I’m so sorry, do not feel guilty at all. It’s okay to say no!!
MacaronJolly [OP] 14 points 2y ago
We lost a lot of people a few months ago and our other shift is out right now for personal reasons. So just me and my SM running the store unless we get help from borrowed partners. It’s rough.

I tell myself it’s ok to say no but I still feel bad because I know my SM is the one who has to deal with it and they’re struggling too. :(

At this point your DM should be helping… a couple weeks ago all my SSVs got exposed to COVID and my DM worked at my store for at least a week until people could return. They should do at least something.
MacaronJolly [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Our DM is not very supportive and despite us reaching our limit and expressing concern for our mental health (me and my SM), our DM seems like they don’t really care. To the point where we’re considering calling partner resources.

When I was a shift, there was one time I had just opened 6 days straight and finally had a day off. I woke up at like 6:15am to my phone blowing up because the borrowed shift hadn’t shown up and the SM wasn’t answering anyone’s calls. Definitely not my responsibility but I knew if no one was there by 7am then we’d lose a ton of money on the day. I was trying to make ASM too so I didn’t even shower, just got dressed and went in. Spent 15 mins getting the safe ready, delegating the other partners to speed through the opening tasks and get coffee and pastries and everything ready and opened the store to a bunch of customers waiting and some angry as you can imagine. One of the most stressful shifts I ever had. The SM finally responded around 10am and she was in another state a couple hours away. So we recovered the morning, I stayed until SM got there, got thanked by the district manager and definitely felt like I had made major brownie points towards my ASM goal. Had a meeting scheduled with him soon after that. Then the district manager quit, my meeting with the new DM never happened and I got scheduled for another 6 opens in a row when my SM took a leave of absence.

Don’t stress yourself out, sacrificing peace of mind or anything else for your store. You sound like a phenomenal partner/shift and the store is lucky to have you. Your SM is the one that will need to promote/hire/transfer in a new shift and in my experience through 6 years and 6 stores, is the SM won’t do anything like that unless they feel the burden themselves.

TL:DR Don’t overwork yourself for your SM. It’s good to be reliable but things won’t change if they think they can just rely on you to pick up the slack

That sounds so stressful. 🥲

The thing is, my SM has been feeling the burden as well and they’ve been super supportive and is on the floor about as much as I am, if not more. We’ve been dealing with this for at least a month now so we’re both reaching our limit. We’ve been looking for new SSV hires or even transfers with no luck. We’ve gotten some new baristas but that doesn’t help our SSV situation. It feels like we’re never going to come out of this hole.

I know at the end of the day I need to focus on my school work and my mental health, it just sucks because I know my SM is struggling with their mental health too.

Don't. This company doesn't give a shit about you. If they lose money, they need to step it up and get another shift. You're not an SM, don't worry like one.
MacaronJolly [OP] 4 points 2y ago
I know that. I’m not worried about the company or the store, I’m worried about my SM. I happen to have a really great one who does their best, especially given the circumstances right now, and it sucks to see both of us so defeated.
SpookySteve 3 points 2y ago
I'm sorry, I really am. In that case, good on you for hauling ass. I'm pretty jaded at this point; I've only ever had one store and our SM is pretty awful. Great at their job but a terrible person.
MacaronJolly [OP] 4 points 2y ago
I’m sorry you have an awful SM. :(
I am truly thankful for mine as I previously had a really shitty SM (person and at their job) before my current one.
Markedsoultheif 4 points 2y ago
I’m just a barista who’s shifts keep getting progressively longer and longer. I’m starting to feel burnt out myself. And here I am hoping and praying that on Monday my SM approves my vacation time so I can go see my little sister. Who I haven’t seen in six months. It’s frustrating and it seems like the standards Starbucks has now set us up for burn out.
MacaronJolly [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I hope you get to see your little sister :( if your SM doesn’t approve I hope you’re at least able to get your shifts covered.
Markedsoultheif 1 points 2y ago
It sounded like today it was going to approved. But unfortunately at my store, everyone wants their shifts covered but no one wants to have to cover for anyone else
meggars 2 points 2y ago
I'm just curious, what is an SSV? I'm about to start working there, so I don't know what all the acronyms mean yet.
occamysRazor 2 points 2y ago
Shift Supervisor!
meggars 3 points 2y ago
Ah that makes sense!!

OP I'm so sorry that you're the only person who is saddled with this much responsibility. At the end of the day, put in your best effort, but don't be upset that you can't do more. You have other responsibilities in your life. Starbucks isn't everything. This isn't how it should be, but I'm proud of you for how far you've gotten
MacaronJolly [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Thank you, this was real sweet 🥺

Switch to a different day part if you can!! I was so burnt out on opening after 2 years I’ve been on mids for a month and I love it I feel like a barista again
MacaronJolly [OP] 3 points 2y ago
There’s no option for that as I’m the only SSV... I work both nights and mornings, alternating with my SM. Thanks to block scheduling we don’t really have mids. :(
MacaronJolly [OP] 1 points 2y ago
fun lil update for ya’ll: I’m closing tonight and opening tomorrow and when I messaged my SM about it on Friday, they didn’t even acknowledge it. No apologies, no “oops that was a mistake let me fix it,” nothing. They’ve messaged me since then but never acknowledged my text.

I’m reaching the point of not even showing up tomorrow since I’m clearly not respected enough to warrant a response.

I feel you friend. We had a bunch of partners quit at my store too and we actually cut our hours for a few weeks until we could get some green beans trained up a little. We were only open from 6-3 for a little while. It's still really rough though and my manager just went on vacation and left me as the shift POC for the store, and now I'm stuck dealing with the mask crap and opening our lobby this week without her here.
MacaronJolly [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Holy shit that’s really fucked that your SM left you to have to deal with opening the lobby. Im sorry :/ sending positive vibes and hoping you do the best you can but don’t extend yourself, you aren’t getting paid SM money.
iSpeakMeme 1 points 2y ago
I mean, it is what it is. I'm also looking to be an ASM so it's just kind of comes with it at this point. Same goes to you though, being burnt out is never fun and you do eventually need to take some time for you.
MacaronJolly [OP] 2 points 2y ago
It’s just so sad that this company expects so much out of people when our pay is not even a livable wage (at least in my state).

Good luck with the opening of your lobby friend. I wish nothing but smooth days ahead of you.

Sorry to hear this. Seems like at this point your dm needs to start doing something.

You would think. Our DM has not been of much help.
