Advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Big_The_Kat
I am a new barista. Been on the floor for only 2 days. I feel like this job is sucking the life out of me. I’m not even good at anything but dto and even then I’m horrible at heating my own food and getting the stickers out. I’m really bad at the oven. I haven’t even attempted bar yet and I’m due in tomorrow morning at 4:30. I just really don’t know if I can do this. I also really need the money. I feel like my mental health is just spiraling. I can’t enjoy anything at all in life right now. None of my hobbies or anything and I’m snappy with my girlfriend who’s being really nice to me right now. I need help.

I’m sorry friend :( hang in there, I was the same way when I was thrown on the floor and I cried in the bathroom after continuously messing up orders and getting yelled at. It’s trial and error, but you’ll get there. I’ve worked here for 2 months now and I’m very confident in my work now, but I still have questions sometimes. Never be afraid to ask for help! Your partners are there for you and I’m sure will be happy to help you :) you got this!

i’ve worked here for almost two years. there are days when it doesn’t even feel like work, and days where i hate the thought of going to work. In terms of skills- practice is key but even partners who have been at the store for years still drop food and spill drinks.
most important thing to remember is it’s just a job and it’s just coffee
i wish you the best of luck

Honestly, it’s been 2 days. No one expects you to be amazing at anything yet. Take a deep breath, it’s going to be ok.

The best advice I can give for the ovens is that you are absolutely going to burn yourself at some point. It won’t be THAT bad and taking the fear away helps. It’s just an oven, don’t be afraid of it.

When it’s not peak and super busy ask to try on other positions like CS and Warming. And it’s ok to keep notes of how to make stuff and how long they’re good in your pocket. Most of us did that at some point. Keep reviewing drink recipes and eventually ask for some bar time.

Because there are so many different things to be done at Starbucks, it takes a long, long time to feel comfortable doing all of them. You’ll get there. Give yourself some grace and ask yourself SSV for an extra name tag that says training on it so people will be nicer to you.

it’ll get easier, i promise! i started about 6 months ago and i felt the same way. i know everything seems SO hard at first but you just have to push through the initial few weeks of learning and it’ll all be muscle memory in no time. i was super anxious and stressed when i first started because it felt like i was NEVER going to remember how to do everything, but one of these days it’s just going to “click” and you’ll look back and be glad you didn’t give up. it definitely takes some time to get comfortable and feel confident in your abilities, but that’s just how it is with any new job.

however your mental health should always be a top priority so don’t push yourself further than you can handle. you should check out Lyra, starbucks gives you access to therapy for FREE through them and it’s so easy to use. it’s a great resource and i definitely recommend it !!!

anyways, i believe in you!! and you should believe in yourself too, you’re capable of so much more than you think. wishing you the best!

hi :) i would be so anxious id throw up before every shift for honestly the entire first month because it is So Much to learn and the only way u can really learn is by being thrown into it and that sucks but its my second month now and everythings fine and easy once u know what ur doin, a month ago i thought id have to quit too but if u stick it out you'll probably end up liking it a lot

Typically I’d say it takes a couple months to get your knowledge and skills to the point where you feel a little better, half a year to feel like a pro. I’m a 273 SSV and still have days where I feel completely under prepared for the situations we deal with.

Sometimes, you know right away that a job is a bad fit. I quit a job once after 3 days because I simply could not physically do it (and I am very stubborn, I usually stick with things that aren't working for far too long). Only you can know if this is the situation you are in now.

That being said, all jobs take time to learn. No one expects you to know how to do anything on day 2. It takes more like 3 months to learn a job like this and that's hard but it's also okay and it will get easier with practice.

It sounds to me like you are depressed, and depression is going to follow you to any workplace. Please, if you are able, reach out to a therapist for help. I spent years treating my depression with drugs and alcohol and denial instead of therapy and medication and it's not worth it. If treatment is not accessible to you now, sticking with starbucks might make it so in a few months when you get health insurance and Lyra benefits.

I’m already medicated for my depression( and also anxiety). I got diagnosed when I was 18 or 19. I’m 21 now. The only meds that have worked for me is what I’m taking now, everything else makes me sleep way too much or feel numb to everything. I was fine before this but I’m just without words to describe how I feel about this.

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. Have you worked before? It may be that you need time to adjust to working if not. Otherwise, if other jobs have not made your depression worse, then maybe this is not the job for you and that's okay! It sounds to me like it would be useful to talk this through with your therapist to decide what is best for your mental health.

I've found that working while depressed can be a real struggle, but that over time the structure is helpful. And of course sometimes the financial reality limits your options, which can be a terrible bind.

I hope that you are able to do what you need to do to take care of yourself.

I’ve worked a whole lot doing everything from cashiering, working in child care, and even being a photographer at an amusement park. I’ve had a very exciting life so far and I don’t understand why this one job just makes me feel so horrible. But maybe you’re right and it just isn’t what I’m meant to be doing. I don’t know.
