Trying to avoid lurking üni0n busters at all costs, but I recently talked to a mentor about organizing the SBUX workforce. Talk to your store's leaders that you trust. Don't agitate them out front, but make sure they understand theres a problem with corporate policies, especially their lack of concern for COVID. We need to organize now or never yall.
If you have seen the march that Hilton hotel employees made on their CEO, you might know what I'm talking about. We need to make committees, gather leaders we trust to speak on our behalf (so the average barista won't lose their job for speaking out alone) and demand that we keep mandating masks and/or recieve better pay or whatever is the best course of action for each state or region. (As a Georgia worker I think we need to keep masks and get paid more than $10/hr to deal with our specific customers who can and WILL lie about being vaccinated).
If you have any resources on organizing, gather them and make plans. I think very soon, if we act accordingly, we can make this happen.

i agree. idk how i'd get started at my store but i can try and maybe see who else is interested. im also in GA and yeah, my entire store staff freakin hates the new policy. already we have so many people in the store for mobile and takeout orders who arent wearing masks... our location is 2nd busiest in our district and once our l Iobby opens we're screwed basically. 🙃
so do u know anyone who could give me pointers on organizing w/o a union? also what would that look like? i consider myself pretty well liked at my store so ppl might listen to me, i just dunno what i'd say or where to start.

I'm interested too. My store has been forced to remain open until 11 at night (including cafe), which makes us one of the only stores in our district that remains open this late. The night crew consists of primarily women and the amount of pirates and drug dealers (which the cops have been called a handful of times by the neighboring senior rentals building) lurking around our parking lot and the surrounding areas is concerning to say the least. We've all voiced our concerns and begged both our DM and our manager to let us at least lock our doors at 10 but they downright refuse. Not only that, but we're always terribly understaffed, always given an unfair amount of tasks to complete (in 30 minutes, might I add) and despite the very obvious safety concerns, they ignore us. And on top of that, our district manager is known to downright force people to transfer to other stores or will persistently bully someone into transferring. Everyone at my store who works night feel absolutely hopeless and at a complete loss of what to do, social feel like this would be a good thing

Are you a shift? If your SM or DM are never there that late, fuck em. Lock up for your safety. In the modules it’s repeated a few times that partner safety is the companies top priority (we know it’s bullshit, but it’s documented). Also, we’re there to make decisions for the business - you’re the boss on your shift.

regarding your convo about the masks with the redditor before, it really pisses me off too that people are only going to do the wrong thing and put us in danger. thankfully im fully vaccinated, but its not right to force those who arent into a vulnerable position like this. i used to work at a store in FL, and am still in their convos because ill be returning from a transfer, and all of their plexiglass screens are gone 😨. i hope your coworkers are able to get the vaccine when they can. i try to tell myself that this is just a form of natural selection intended to take out the dummies who pretend to be vaccinated so that i dont get so upset.

Man, Unionizing would be amazing. We had to work for 6 hours with vomit on our floors because our SM decided we didn’t need to close. That’s a health code violation if I’m not mistaken. We’re constantly understaffed, to the point that one of our partners couldn’t take it and just walked out last night. I am 100% behind a union

i work in a grocery store sbux and we’re unï0nized through the store and it honestly has not helped us at all. the store never enforced the mask rules and now not even our baristas are wearing masks. i ended up catching covid from the store and was sick over christmas. our manager has bullied multiple baristas into quitting and sexually harassed one before they finally quit. the un!0n did NOTHING to help us. absolutely not trying to rain on your parade but you should be warned that it’s not always all it’s cracked up to be

Dude masks are going to go away the more people get vaccinated. You had to have known this was coming. get over it
sirensuffering [OP]12 points2y ago
The problem IS that it's happening, not that I didnt see it coming... The issue isn't just masks going away, it's that people will not wear them while still being unvaccinated, spreading the disease and killing people. You know people lie, right?
rio8envy7-23 points2y ago
You know we’re not allowed to ask if someone is fully vaccinated right? We’re trying to go back to normal. As long as you’re vaccinated fully you shouldn’t have to worry as much. That’s literally the whole point of the vaccine so if you have it You’re less likely to get Covid. Plus we still wear masks. A lot of places aren’t requiring people who are fully vaccinated to wear masks anymore so it’s not just Starbucks.
sirensuffering [OP]11 points2y ago
Yes I know that we can't ask ppl about their vaccine status, but my point is that people will do the wrong thing. Always count on that, especially when we as a company enable them to be assholes. I'm concerned for partners who can't get the vaccine at all because of preexisting medical issues... theyre people too and their consent to the new policy has not been considered. Vaccines are also not foolproof, so if some asshole unmasked and unvaxxed customer decides to yell at me over the plexiglass, I still have a chance of getting it.
"Getting over" an issue instead of addressing it isnt how things get done.
rio8envy7-16 points2y ago
Then that’s also considered an issue everywhere not just Starbucks. It kind of sounds like you’re suggesting we should be wearing masks for the rest of our lives and people don’t want that either.this isn’t ever going to fully go away. People are assholes no matter what not just with not being vaccinated. As for people who have pre-existing conditions doesn’t mean that eventually they can’t get a vaccine. I’m not saying vaccines are full proof I’m saying that being fully vaccinated means there’s less of a chance. Just because you get a flu shot doesn’t mean you won’t get the flu it means that you could still get it but it may not be as severe and same goes with Covid. I’m not thrilled that we’re going to start opening up partial seating.
