Handicap parking (rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by jaquizzle69
Ohhhhhh boy I am furious. At our store the handicap spaces are only marked on the ground. They’re kind of faded but there’s still CLEARLY the lines on the sides of the spaces so people can load and unload their chairs and such. Unless you’re driving without ever taking drivers ed, you should know what that means. I’m sick and tired of able bodied people parking there (no handicap parking tags or anything also they’re regulars). I’ve brought it up twice and was told to calm down and that I was being a Karen. It doesn’t matter that we don’t get a lot of people using wheelchairs, the point is that there is always a spot available for them!!!! Accessibility means accessibility ALWAYS. Also it’s not legal to park there without tags!!! But I was explicitly told NOT to say anything to the customers. I know you can’t see every disability but I can see your license plate and your rear view mirror....no handicap tags...

I meannnn if you were really inclined to, You can always call your local nonemergency number and tell them about it. Do it anonymously. I would say take pictures of the car without a handicap and their license plate but that could end messy if someone notices you. Also, if one of your partners dismisses you by calling you a “Karen” I feel like that’s creating a hostile work environment and you should call partner relations.

I second this 100%. call, they’re gonna learn fast. also try to see if you can get one of those standing signs from the city or Starbucks or wherever they come from

I’ve just been looking for the right number to call for the city. I’m not sure exactly what department handles it but I’m definitely looking into it. I really appreciate your advice :)

The police non emergency number should either be able to take a report or direct you to the correct people

Depending on the location, those are very expensive tickets and usually a priority for parking enforcement. They may choose to swing around during peak times to ticket.

Those are really good ideas! Thank you!

I don’t know what the law in your state is, but in my state it’s hard to enforce without a sign. That said, I still wouldn’t park in a spot that could be a handicap spot.

If I were you I’d reach out to your city about getting it repainted and signs put up. You’re a good person for caring and are definitely not a Karen for speaking up.
