anyone in a course similar to sociology to let me know roughly how many hours i can work? i’m going into my first year, and i’m trying to move out so i need as many hours as possible. if anyone has any advice, lemme know :)

It depends on how many classes you are taking. My first year I was only working a max of 20 hours but I was taking 4 classes and they were in person.

i got a degree in psych and found that 20-25 to be the most comfortable if i was taking anywhere from 15-18 credits. tbh i found a) the # of shifts and b) the times of my shifts most impactful. for example this past semester I had Sunday deadlines so i talked to my sm and got most of my either sundays off or a short shift early in the day. i also found working opening or early morning shifts that end at 1 to be easiest bc then i still had the rest of my day to study. if you work a 1-close are you realistically going to wake up at 5am to study? no you aren’t. also, as another pointer arrange ahead of time to take some time off around finals and the day before any major tests/assignments . ur syllabi will be SUPER helpful for this.
lastly!! if you want to maximize the amount of hours you can work without overcommitting yourself, it helps to be known as someone who can be reached if shifts need covered. that way when you get a call asking if you can come in the next day, you can say no if you have too much on your plate. if you’ve been really productive though and feel like you have the time you can pick it up. i’ve always been a partner that picks up a lot of extra shifts so i’m usually one of the first people that gets asked to work a shift when it’s available. you can also express this to your sm like “hey i know i’m cutting my hours back but please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need a shift covered”

I attend university full time and work over 35 hours most weeks. It really depends on who you are and what you can handle personally.
