hello! i’m a first time poster but a long time lurker! i’m going to be training my first barista next week and i was wondering if anyone had important key notes/tips and tricks to train the barista. any information would be helpful :)

don’t do everything for them, like when you’re teaching dto just show them where the button is and don’t click it for them, it’s easier to learn if you’re pressing it and getting that muscle memory:)

i was just recently a green bean! so coming from the opposite perspective, a few things i appreciated that my trainer did for me was make me a hot/cold bar cheat sheet (like pumps and shot with the exceptions), remind me that its just coffee and we're all bound to make mistakes and spill things, and make sure they are doing everything as much as possible. we learn by repetition so it's imperative they immediately start out by doing. also make sure to constantly reassure them since its a lot of information at once and they will get overwhelmed. hope that helps! and good luck!

OH and always remind them that its okay to ask questions if they are shy! im constantly asking a million questions every shift but i can understand that some people may not feel comfortable doing so!

As a green bean myself here’s some things i noticed that helped - going over the amount of syrups need in drinks multiple times - going over register multiples (i was overwhelmed with all the buttons) - make sure to let them know everyone moves the urns in a different order so always double check - please please please teach them how to get sandwiches out of the oven, the amount of times i dropped sandwiches my first day by myself from not grabbing them correctly with the tongs - make sure they know that the chai tea lattes are under teas bc i freaked out not knowing - hobart hobart hobart!!! - dating things, i always forget when things are dated bc we didn’t go over that enough - I know this already in the books but make sure you teach them to put the rings in the whip cans! - if you know they are going to be an open or closer show them the task card and kinda show them examples bc my first day opening i was clueless!! - The funnel cake traps, i know they are new to everyone but drill that into their head - and one of my favorite things my trainer did for me was give me a “break” it wasn’t an actual break, it was to go over things, try to take everything in, and review what i just learned! -TEACH THEM SMALLWARES!! I just learned what is was today so dor the past few shifts it wasn’t done bc no one would teach me 😐 — this is just my personal notices when being trained a month ago, everyone learns at a different pace and what i was trained with made me feel comfortable but i would of liked to been more prepared! You don’t have to take any of these tips but coming from a green beans pov this is what i wish i was taught more or learned along the way!

Im not going to read any of these comments because ill tell you what helped me and then how i trained my green beans.
First ask whether your bean is a visual or physical learner. Don’t assume anything about the bean and get that out of the way. Next don’t train them bar first. If possible train them on register. They need to first learn CS, need to learn how a store operates. I knew how to run the store before i could tell you what an extra dry Cappa is. I didn’t learn bar until i was made a SSV. Once your bean is comfortable at bar they should have the whole job down. Nothing worse than having a bar snob not know how to change trash or fill the condiments.

It helped me when I realized that grande is generally 2/4 (shots to pumps) whether hot or iced, similarly 1/3 for tall (yeah, yeah I know about americanos, fw exceptions) it sort of gave my brain a North Star to fix on. Cold brew pump variations, I have to look them up on the app or POS. I don’t get why anyone would want pumps in CB anyway, ruins it for me
