Do starbucks stores ever have security? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by wtchtrsh
I am wondering what it would take for a store to have security. I am a closing shift and am experiencing harassment and violence and constant homeless and mental health crises. How much do we have to take before something gives?

Update:
My DM and store manager have decided to have an all store meeting to discuss incidents and de-escalation. The feedback I have got from them is that I have been doing everything right as far as attempting to resolve, calling police when necessary and filling out Incident Reports. It is frustrating going into this that we need training for this in the first place. I get paid to count money and make coffee. I am not a trained mental health professional and I have literally no authority over people. I am a nice girl in a green apron, I can only do so much and my job has put me in a constant position of vulnerability to be bullied and exposed to individuals with severe mental issues. I wish I could quit, but I have 3 semesters left at ASU.

My store had security purely because it was part of a shopping center/outdoor mall that had regular security patrols. Without that, there is nothing. It's all up to your SM and DM.

That being said... have you called the police for the cases of harassment and violence? You need to start doing that, and every time it happens in your store, make sure you are writing up incident reports. They will help keep records plus it's a paper trail for the SM and DM.

I always call police and fill out incident reports... What can the store manager or dm do?

It's their responsibility to arrange safety precautions and whatnot. Whatever they can do to ensure the safety of their employees.

I know your pain. We were basically told that we would not have Starbucks designated security because it takes away from the “third place,” and they claim that it would not help with de-escalation. We do have security for the building but their hours are limited and they rarely arrive before the incident is over. I had someone pull a knife out on me yesterday morning while I was on register, and although I don’t think a security guard could have done much in that situation, I feel that their presence would be enough to deter them from trying anything in the first place :/

I feel the presence could be preventative. Who is scarier, someone in a uniform or green apron? 15 minute de-escalation training is not sufficient.

Couldn’t agree with you more. But apparently the comfort of our “customers,” takes precedence over partner safety.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. The deescalation training is a fucking joke. You’re right, our job is to make coffee, not be mental health professionals constantly dealing with ill or violent individuals. No other job would require this shit. My store is in a bad area, we constantly have problems, constantly calling the cops, constantly filing incident reports as well. When we also brought up hiring security, the DM said “well lots of stores have this same issue.” And that’s IT. Like wtf?

I am really a shift. I have gone through all the training, but I work in a cafe store and I am supposed to leave baristas in the floor alone while I get assaulted and harassed?! The training the give is useless in the actual situations. And I am starting to feel scared to go to work. I have to call 911 multiple time a day.. I always fill out incident reports and follow starbucks procedures to the best of my ability. These incidents are getting worse, so I am curious if there is the possibility of prevention, you said the store manager can take the appropriate actions with the dm. What would that be?

This is passive aggressive for no reason - they stated their concerns. Their concerns clearly are about individuals that violate the Third Place.
