Help I’m having issues with a store manger and I don’t know what to do as a new transfer (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Mac-and-cheese29
I transferred to a new store for the summer since I’m a college student and can’t afford an apartment for the summer near my old store. I originally planned to work full time and had open availability. Last night I found out about some family stuff that changes my availability. I tried to talk to my store manger about this and he straight out the gate was very aggressive. Now he is denying any availability changes I have. What should I do

How massive of a change was it. Did you pull a “I am always open” to “I can work 4 days a week between 8 and 3” Otherwise I couldn’t see why he wouldn’t work with your schedule. Also consider he may have accepted your transfer FOR your availability. Not justifying him being aggressive just saying that might have been why he picked you.

I have open Sunday- Wensday and 5-close Friday-Saturday as what I requested.

So you’re a available 7 days of the week, and over half those days are fully open? Tell him to kick rocks that’s plenty of time that you’re available

What frustrates me the most is the reason I had to change my availability was because my dad gets to go back to work way sooner then his company originally expected. And my family needs someone to watch my baby sister while my parents are at work. It’s not an ideal situation and the change in my parents schedule wasn’t something we expected.

Open like you can work any time, or can work only opens? And 5pm-close? What’s the difference vs the original?

The original was all week open and open meaning I can work

Ah sory I missed the original availability in your original post.

So completely open availability is generally a huuuge plus for someone. Having that quickly changed kind of gives off a feeling of “you lied to me just to get the transfer through” even if that wasn’t what happened.

Added to that, even if your availability is still relatively open, there’s a chance it doesn’t suit the store needs. I worked at a store once whose busiest times were specifically Friday and Saturday mornings. And if that’s 5pm-close and not 5am-close, 5pm is late enough that depending on store hours and other partners’ availablity, possibly doesn’t work as a shift at all. Also if they’re doing block scheduling it might really mess it up.

In any case, none of this is your fault, and ideally your manager behaved a little better, but let’s look at moving forward.

Do you have a certain amount of hours you require / need to reach? If you’re trying to hit 30-40 hrs, dropping down to what may be only 4 days (if those closing shifts don’t work for the store) might not be feasible for the store. If you previously needed 40 but are now fine with only 2-3 shifts, remember to bring that up with your manager, so it doesn’t seem like you’re trying to custom make your own schedule.

If you can, try and bring it up with your manager in a “help me problem solve” sort of tone can help. “Hey Mr. SM, with my family circumstances changing I have to do X on Y days and cannor get out of it. I know you valued my original open availablity, is there something we can work out?” You also might end up having to look into stores that might be able to work with your availability more.
