Am I the bad barista? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by leekyabloh
So today was an insane day. Yesterday, I had my first doctors appointment in 3 years. The appointment was for a routine physical as I’m leaving to college soon, but surprisingly I also had to receive 3 non-COVID related vaccines. Last night, my arms was sore and I couldn’t sleep at all. I brushed it off and eventually broke night and prepared to get ready for work. I worked today and had some side effects a few minutes before work, I had minor symptoms of sneezing and my body was still in pain, I also had very runny eyes. My supervisors noticed this and I had let them known that I’ve been vaccinated, and I assume they thought I was COVID vaccinated and my manager was essentially upset with me because she thought I got my 2nd dose without telling her, which isn’t the case. Due to me being sick, my manager asked me to step off the floor and contact other stores to find coverage for my shift since I hadn’t called out before work and let the store known I was sick. Although my arms were sore, I was able to perform and sustain the environment. I had no luck with finding another store due to not being around the district and being a new rehire. Fast forward about 15 minutes into me being on register/warming, my shift asked me to be on bar. I replied with “of course, but I will need additional support here and there when bar gets busy as I’ve had blood work and vaccines yesterday”. This shift immediately went and told my manager I wasn’t able to work and my manager told me to go home and that I’d be receiving a corrective action for not calling out, for neglecting the third place and not performing to standards. I had left the floor and gm gotten “dressed” (removed apron) but forgot to clock out, and my manager made a micro aggression of “you need to clock out before you get undressed as that’s stealing company time” and I just had walked out and called PCC.

I’d like to know If I’m in the wrong or did I handle this incorrectly? I wasn’t aware of the vaccines to call out ahead of time and to be honest, I’ve never called out before and all I really needed was some espresso to perform. Is there a corrective action appeal?

if you actually do get written up, I would tell your SM you would like the DM brought into the conversation and if that doesn’t help, talk to ethics and compliance and file a complaint

This made me very upset. Sorry this happened to you.
You shouldn’t get a write up, you came in for your shift. You didn’t call out. That should be all the argument you need. I would try very hard to transfer away from that manager

Your manager (and shift) is a twat. Talk to your DM and if that doesn't work out go to ethics and compliance. SM's like that grind my gears!

So I didn’t receive a write up for this particular incident but recently my shifts/SM have been on me about things more since this situation. I was written up today for a joke I sent into our store’s group chat, a joke I made about a “customer having black air forces”, off the clock.

I was written up for discrimination and told by my store manager that I “racially” profiled him, which didn’t sit right with me as I’m an Haitian-American barista who’s had way too many situations.

I signed the write up but soon looked in the group chat to find baristas telling to “stfu” and much more but the manager hasn’t said anything about it.

Any advice? Do I just take the documented coaching and go or what? This is really messing with my career progression.
